Wolves are very smart, they walk in a uniform manner because they don't want to leave too many footprints. They don't want other animals or people to notice that they have a big pack. They can trap their prey.

In areas where brown bear and grey wolf populations overlap, bears will target wolfpacks and steal their food. Also if a bear stumbles upon a wolf den it will with certainty dig it up and kill the cubs.
Not only bears but also, mountain lions, snow leopards, tigers and hyenas will all kill wolves if they get the chance.

Don't anthropomorphize them. They're animals so they don't feel emotion. All animals operate on instinct. Mammals need each other and have young that cannot be independent right away, like animals that hatch out of eggs. So they have more complex means of bonding and communication, which is why dogs are so expressive. We are also mammals but for us, the same behaviors include emotion. So it's easy to project human feelings onto animals. But it's just the mammal part of us.

Seen this before back in 98, they were closing the distance on a small herd of elk in deep snow. The leader would lead so far then step to the side and the whole pack of 14 would keep going and then it joined back in the end of the line and the next leader would step aside and do the same after it lead for a distance. That was the coolest thing I ever seen witnessing wolves. They would not have been able to take more than one down. They don't even always have the ability to take one down. There are quite a few times when an elk will either get away or will actually turn and fight. It has even been documented that elk have killed pack members when they fight back. So it is quite impossible to take down more than 1 at a time.
That is so amazing you got to see that, though!
We have been studying the wolves here in Yellowstone since their reintroduction in the 90's. Absolutely one of my favorite species to study.

The Pack Leader for those wondering is the last one in the back. The leader trails the back to keep formation and navigate the whole pack. Being Able to see everything : howl if danger is near, halt the pack and regroup.

The last one in the back sees the least 😂. Can’t see shit if all you see is your pack members infront of you

For you wondering, no wolf packs don't have pack leaders. The myth was based on a study on captive wolves and does not represent the behavior of the wild animals.

I've read that seasoned leaders of wolf packs actually survey from near the back of the pack when traveling, rather than taking the lead position.

This is like our ancestors in Stone Age 😢. It, through their courage and determination and will to survive that make us what we are today we owe our life to them. And i pray that these majestic creatures will not become one of the thousands extinct species.

The lead wolf is at the end of the line😊
Humans look for the leader to have the best car, highest position, or bodyguards
The bible teaches us that we must serve others or put others before us, AMEN..stay humble and respectful because you could be standing by a boss on the bus or talking to one about anything...God bless every humble ,loving caring Boss all around the world..
Carry on being awesome while leading the Pack❤

Conservationist here! The whole "Alpha" thing only exists in artificial packs created in captivity. In the wild, they act more like human families. The pack is led by the mom and dad, and the rest of the pack is their children. Sometimes those kids move out and start their own family and may occasionally rejoin their old pack. It is really fascinating to me.
