      ' Ice cold in Alex ' on Talking pictures TV. Hadn't seen it in years and once again I was thoroughly impressed by it. I know I'm very late in this regard, but I wanted to add my own r.i.p Sylvia 😢

    What her downfall shows, not just in reference to her but anyone who has been in power for a long time, leaders can get complacent. They think that they can rely on the past to remain in power. History is not made in the past, but in the present and the future

      She was the smartest one around. Perhaps she became too arrogant. That’s a possibility. Here in the USA we have politicians who have been in office for all of their lives. At least she did something with the time she served. Winston Churchill as the greatest wartime, Prime Minister of Great Britain. Margaret Thatcher is the greatest peacetime minister of Great Britain. I hope I’m wrong, but I have a feeling we won’t see the likes of her again for 100 years.

    • @SiVlog1989
      @SiVlog1989 Год назад +2

      @@charlieboy1701 well maybe, but we'll never know until we experience it. An underrated Prime Minister, in my view, is the man who's time in Office was bookended by Churchill, Clement Atlee. It was under his watch, for example, that Britain began to reconcile with its brutal history of colonialism, particularly in the Indian Subcontinent. Although in the case of the partition of India and Pakistan, it was far from perfect, paving the way for chaos and bloodshed, he did nonetheless pave the way for Britain to be more open to allow its colonial subjects to become independent. What's more, some of his policies, like the NHS (National Health Service) are revered institutions to this day. Even Churchill wasn't perfect, even for his day, his views regarding the British Empire were old fashioned. When the world was moving away from Colonialism, he refused to even consider the idea of Britain letting go of its empire

    Had Thatcher reorganized her government after that win over Heseltine, she still would have been heading the ship of state at No. 10 Downing Street had she saw the danger in front of her in terms of a Heseltine ministry. But her arrogance was what destroyed her power base, unfortunately. 😐

    have to say that she knew the party rules all those years (re-election every year) and despite how she always said how ridiculous it was after 1990, she had all the previous decade to make a change. Of course though before 90 it suited her because each year previous it was a free headline for her to show how she was the boss. Unfortunately for her it came back to bite her

    • @kevinlongman007
      @kevinlongman007 4 года назад +2

      It was not a mandatory leadership election as it was only triggered if somebody chose to challenge her. As it happens she was only challenged twice in her 15 years as Conservative leader. The first time was in 1989 after she had already been PM for over 10 years and she won easily and the second time was by Heseltine in 1990.

    Prime Minister Thatcher did not deserve to lose her job like this. The only way she should have lost her job as PM is if she (ie - her Govt/Cabinet) lost a vote of no confidence on the floor of the House of Commons, and the Tories lost the ensuing General Election. The irony is she secured more votes than Heseltine, and yet she was the one who stood down!
    I sometimes wonder if the Tories have ever got over this traumatic period. Debate about her Govt's policies are for elsewhere.

      It was her duty to commission elections if she felt as a ceremonial head of the nation one can be concerned if the government of the day is doing the job right. With that said, 40 years after 1975, her private records and those of Prince Charles said that both the Prime Minister of Australia and their Governor General plead for help and constitutional advice regarding the disembowelment of their political situation ironically anchored in an American inspired legislative setup. They jointly figured something was not going right over there and it was not their problem to solve.

      Well they clearly paid a high price (well deserved) for it because they were thrown in exile for 13 years after John Major's defeat in 1997. Perhaps if Margaret Thatcher had stayed on as prime minister, she might have lost the next general election, but at least then the party could have recovered and stated 'the Thatcher era is over, time for a renewal' and reformed itself the correct way. Instead there were too many wounds that didn't heal, and the party shot itself in the foot multiple times. Definitely an inglorious end to a wonderful prime minister.

      Alba Productions Every politician eventually wears out their welcome. One thing rarely mentioned was this: only after Reagan and Thatcher left office did real economic sanctions get imposed on the apartheid regime in South Africa, finally bringing that regime to an end. That her and Reagan had both effectively blocked any genuine sanctions, keeping that regime in power much longer than it should have.
      It would also seem that Margaret Thatcher had lost the ability to listen. The weirdest thing I remember was her use in public of the “Royal We”, when announcing the birth of a grandchild.
      When anyone is in the kind of bubble that forms around a head of government (or state), unless they have top notch advisers, who feel confident to tell a head of government not what they want to hear, but what they NEED to hear, the Head of Government (State) eventually loses touch with their people.

    I gave a ride to a lady in Arizona in 1976 and she was so polite when she got in my car, but about 10 minutes into our journey, she started to melt and her human skin fell off revealing an amazing black, shiny body with 6 legs and 2 tentacles coming out her head..
    You see, she was a giant queen ant and she asked me to go live with her underground to help her start an ant colony and fertilize her eggs and I accepted.. We now have 22 wonderful children together.. Below is a family photo of us..

      It's like Fayed vs Hamilton. You hate both sides so much that however it plays out, someone gets shafted.
      The satisfaction of it being BitchThatcher is just....mmmmmmwah!
