    The Kia Soul was one of the first mainstream cars to offer the option of electric power. Now, the new second-generation model has gone electric-only. It uses much of the same technology as its Kia e-Niro sister model, but with an added dash of style. Vicky Parrott finds out more.

    We got our Soul EV a few weeks ago and it is a great car. Yesterday it was named "Urban Car of the Year" at the World Car Awards. Living, as I do, in a remote part of the Scottish Highlands I would like to suggest that it is also an excellent rural car. Our driving is on windy, narrow roads with plenty of steep hills yet we regularly achieve more than the 4.4 miles/KwH which is what Kia claim for the Soul. Driving on full regeneration I hardly ever need to use the brake. The various reviews often criticise the small boot, yet for us it is perfectly adequate and having the boot floor at the same level as the sill is an advantage - and with the seats folded down the space is substantial. Also, the space under the floor is big enough to accommodate the space-saver spare wheel which we bought with the car and which I consider essential in rural areas. There is plenty of space left for the various cables. So far my only complaint is that there is no way to permanently turn off the "lane keep assist" so I have t turn it off every time we start.

    I like this lady's conversational presentation style. She doesn't sound like an annoying DJ (as most male car reviewers do) and doesn't speak with "up-talk", vocal fry, or other such afflictions.

    I bought a KIA soul 2020 for my wife as a bday gift. Ever since, shes coming home everyday late from work, there are full of hand marks, white stains on the seats, mostly at the back and funky smell. Does warranty cover these problems, due to delays and poor staining materials? Please help with advice?

    I understand that the Maxx model here in the U.K. replacing the 1st edition, has no heat pump. Which poses the question - when you have sufficient battery capacity do you still need to have a heat pump fitted to an electric car? Why did they drop the heat pump on what is a fully speced out car?

    Very good video presentation, short, concise and covers all the main points which the curious would ask about. Great job! Having just moved from a 2013 Tiguan Bluemotion 4MO DSG Match Sport Edition, on the grounds of escalating running costs, to a 2017 Venga 4 CRDI ISG... I have just seen the next logical step when the warranty is up on the Venga. Always had a soft spot for the Kia Soul but my wife was never keen on the previous incarnations styling, whereas this one looks great.

    Not mentioned, you can also lower the boot floor down a level to get a little more space/height. Also with the back seats folded down the load area is bigger than an e-Niro so I've read

    I know everyone keeps talking about how great the EV cars are but the economics still don't make sense. I just bought a US 2020 Kia Soul. It cost me 19.2K US$ with tax and destination. This EV Soul is about twice the price. Since electricity isn't free but much cheaper than gasoline I was interested. However even if gasoline wasn't $2.20 a gallon in the US the economics still don't make sense. They give tax credits which aren't discounts. Add in the fact that my gas range is 380 miles on a full tank of gas and it takes 10 minutes to fill the tank ($30) I'm wondering how this really works out? I think they need to have about 600-700 miles range to make electric vehicles competitive with gasoline cars. Hybrids seem to make more sense.

      Test drove one a couple of weeks back and it was MUCH MUCH QUIETER than our Volvo XC40 First Edition. I think it's something to do with the auto recording volume levels on the cameras used for filming (because the car is so quiet, the driver speaks softly, so other noises are more prominent than in an ICE car)... you seem to get this a lot on EV reviews. Go for a test drive yourself (in a few months time, obviously), I'm sure you will be surprised !

    I bought one of the very first tranche of 25 Soul EV that arrived in the UK back in 2014 and have never regretted it. Even though the original car range was officially 130 miles, it has never been an issue, so this car looks like a 'wet dream' to me! The original was, and the later version continues to be, head, shoulders, torso, hips and most of your legs, above the Nissan Leaf.
    There is a downside, in that Kia are a dreadful company, together with their dealers, but that is far from unique. Indeed, I think it is the norm for cars now, so to reject one on that basis would be to cut off your nose to spite your face.
    My only objection to this and similar reviews is that too many other people will take notice and when I come to renew (quite soon) I'll either have to pay more or wait for an eternity!

    Paddle shifters are silly, unless you're racing... once you've turned the wheel past, say 90 degrees, figuring out which one is which is an *added distraction*. Paddle-shifing + windy mountain roads... no thanks. Touchscreens are not a good idea in cars because there's no tactile feedback. It's a shame the Soul lost some buttons since the last model year; at least it's still got *some*, *and* the radio knobs! ;-)

    Has UK shifted from the Metric system?

    • @stephenholland5930
      @stephenholland5930 4 года назад

      Because the UK uses miles as distance indication on road signs. We never fully became metric - sort of half and half!

    • @johnkeepin7527
      @johnkeepin7527 4 года назад

      @@stephenholland5930 Even more complex than that. ‘Road location signs’ on English (i.e. only in England) motorways and some major A roads use metric - set up with road name/direction of travel (A or B)/km from the start point. E.g. M27/B/2.8. They are usually 500m apart, but not always. Also, marker posts are metric, normally one every 100m. Useful for those who understand them, it's a convenient way of reporting where you are if making an emergency call. Also handy for gauging the accuracy of you speed display just using a watch.
      Note that all modern road design, installation etc - including the length of marker lanes etc - is metric, so it’s only really much (but not all) of the signage.

      Perhaps she knows that your general car buyer likes a local dealership and also shies away from specialist maintained aluminium body shells... with all of the potential grief they can give you... even on the slightest car park dink! They talk about the Soul's Marmite looks... but I think Tesla is a Marmite brand... you've got to love them... especially if you are going to ignore the fact that over 40% of Model 3's had faults reported within their first month of delivery! Tesla are a great brand I cannot agree more, the tech is world leading... but they have way too many 'quirks' for your average Joe (in the UK at least).
