Absolutely hated you while watching HvV when I was 8. I was a HUGE JT and Colby fan and watched every episode with my dad who was a HUGE Rob fan. At the time we both hated you considering you voted out both our favourites but looking back I’m glad you were there because it made the season as good as it was. I’m glad you’re doing better these days and i still think you should’ve beaten Natalie in Somoa. Best wishes

I love this older, wiser Russell! He was a groundbreaking player and changed the game in so many ways. I would love to see what he would cook up next. The game of Survivor has evolved tremendously over the years, and much of that can be credited to Russell.
I agree, I liked watching the new Parvati on Winners at War. She got swap screwed into a 4-person pregame alliance in fact from what Michele said it sort of screwed up that alliance too because they had to turn on each early. However, it was cool seeing her playing a better social game. I actually think if she made it to the finals people would have felt good voting for her while in the past the jury begrudgingly voted for her. I could see Russell making similar adjustments and playing very well.

Mr Touchdown neither of the other players were worthy, but here’s the thing- Chris played a great game... for 6 days. He did not outwit until the final 6, and did not outplay. That final 3 sucked. Again, Chris got VOTED OFF. I don’t think people should be able to come back once they are voted off. I was alright with devens, but only because he came back in the mid merge.

Survivor is a fundamentally social game about getting the people you vote out to like you and give you a million dollars. It’s about reading the other castaways, figuring out what kind of gameplay they respect, and modifying your strategy to impress the people who will decide your fate. Tommy read the other contestants like a book. He knew that there were more people in the jury who would vote for the person who made a personal relationship with them than would vote for a more dominant player in terms of challenges and advantages. He built relationships with the other contestants and leveraged those relationships for information, and ultimately jury votes. He created a situation where he never needed to win immunity or find hidden advantages. It wasn’t flashy gameplay, but it was no less impressive than a player like Tony Vlachos one Rob Mariano. Tommy manipulated an island full of people into giving him a million dollars for just hanging out with them for a month. He never had to intimidate or force people. He just listened to them, figured out what made them tick and played them like a fiddle. Season 39 had interesting gameplay and a meticulous and strategic winner. His game was subtle, nuanced, different, and ultimately pretty interesting to watch.
Lyeon Bai yeah the politics of season 39 turned me off. I finished the season, but the racial politics and the sexual harassment... I tune in for Survivor! I want to see good gameplay! Outwit, outlast and outplay!! - Good gameplay speaks for itself. That’s how it should be! Well that’s what I tune in for. I want to be entertained. I want to see an adventure! I want to see heroes and villain’s mix it up! Many people would probably call Russel a villain for the way he played but man was he entertaining to watch! Loved it!!
Brian Jones How can you call David vs Goliath passive gameplay? In that season, you’ve got the first correct use of an idol nullifier, the first time a minority alliance successfully split their vote, several correct idol plays, a fake idol play, several blindsides throughout both the pre- and post-merge, and a perfectly timed immunity run. That cast was at each other’s throats the entire game and they innovated the strategic aspects of the game more than most recent seasons.

This has been one of THE BEST RUclips videos I've seen you do, Russell. I really appreciate how you've matured, and how you take ownership of your dark days. That said, I agree with everything you said. About Richard Hatch: he is an intelligent man, but he's NOT a smart man. Ever since the Sue Hawk debacle, he's never been on Survivor again. A lawsuit ensued, Sue Hawk against the world, but she finally got over it and dropped it. I don't blame her for what some people call her "overraaction" to Hatch's penis accidentally brushing her thigh in the Challenge. She feels the way she feels. But here's who I blame: CBS should never have allowed Hatch to play the challenges naked. It's completely uncalled for. He's an idiot. In my opinion, I think it's abusive for his Tribe to have to see his penis everyday, day in and day out. There's no need for his nudity. He's crying out for attention. He gets it all right! I don't think CBS will EVER allow him on the show again because even if they make him sign a NO NUDITY clause, he'll blow it off and strip down DURING the filming. And there's another "incident" on their hands. It was hard enough for CBS to decide when to yank the touchy-feely Weinstein Wannabe off Season 39! Can you imagine trying to control Hatch? He'd strip down, get pulled, and enjoy his 37 day paid vacation at a local hideout on the CBS dime! He'd be laughing at CBS for being so stupid to have him on again. @@reubenmanzo2054 I don't know what possessed Hatch to do the Challenge buck naked. He's an exhibitionist, for sure. It was a very physical challenge! A network of intersecting 2-6 planks were placed over a pond. The Survivors had to get from Point A to Point B to win points, and many times this meant you faced off with a Survivor from the other Tribe. You had to inch around each other, much like Everest climbers going UP have to inch around climbers going DOWN on the Hillary Step! . A single file 6" path, with a 10, 000 ft drop on one side and 8,000 ft drop on the other!; Anyway, Richard's Johnson was flippin" and floppin' everywhere. One mistake and he could've ripped it off on the 2x6 as he fell into the drink. Survivor SHOULD NOT allow nudity in Challenges especially. In camp, it's annoying, offensive and laughably pathetic. But in a physical challenge, it's outright insane. That's how Sue Hawk got "touched" by the Flying Johnson. It took her a day and a half to process the encounter, then SHE BLEW A GASKET. Sue Hawk, for all she seems so TOUGH & ROWDY is really a very sensitive woman.
I don't have a problem with anyone on season 40 being on season 40. Sarah Lacina is actually one of the more interesting players. As for the thing with Richard's penis in season 8, my impression was that it was deliberate, not accidental. I don't have a problem with seeing it as long as I don't have to touch it.

they need to have a season called the loser bracket where the first person voted out in 20 seasons go out or have one where half the players are the first voted out and the other half are the people who got second called so close vs so far
GingerNinja she gets a GREAT winner's edit and it looks like Chicken will go home the first tribal but then it turns out he has an idol! Francesqua goes first again. There is an edge of extinction and it's looking to be a Natalie situation, she is totally going back in with her 6 idols but then at the end, Chicken wins to get back in the game and makes the final 3. It's him, Coach and Phillip in the ftc. Of course it'll be a blowout, Coach HAS to win. Phillip did nothing and Chicken got voted out. suddenly, Jeff rigs the vote because his husband, Massachusetts Rob once had a pet chicken. Everyone votes for Chicken except for Francesqua, who votes for Jeff. Cochran wins the season.

This is awesome! I didn’t know you had a RUclips! I’m a new survivor fan and just recently started watching the past few years. But while in quarantine I have gone back and binge watched past seasons. I recently binged both of your seasons and must say I was extremely impressed. To go back to back seasons and know where the vote was going to land every tribal says a lot about the great game you played. You deserved both of wins. You played in a time where the game was very personal. If you played in recent years, I believe you would have won. You honestly impacted and changed the game. After you, the game slowly progressed to a more cutthroat game and juries have become more respectful to good game moves.
You know what would of been awesome to watch? If Russell did win Samoa and Richard was was invited to play next season and Russell and Richard started in the same tribe.

I miss Russell’s game play. I mean, what a legend: First to sabotage his own tribe, first to find numerous idols without clues...brilliant. I like Natalie, but Russell should have won. I think the Samoa jury was the beginning of bitter juries not awarding Sole Survivor to the most deserving person. Russell, you are in good company. Sometimes I look at the final four of all seasons and can name at least 13 who deserved to win over the eventual winner. Dominic, Rick Devens, David Wright, etc. I could go in and on....
True about Russell getting for Survivor Samoa but that was definitely not the start of butthurt juries giving it to the least deserving person, it actually started with the 2nd season, Survivor Australia, if u ask me where the Jury gave it to Tina who basically did nothing, instead of Colby.

MJS Lawrence Rich was called and he accepted. CBS then called him a few days later telling him he wouldn’t be there. They did the same to Tina (the winner from season 2). Huge mistake and the people that replaced them were even voted off early.
Bottom Pop Rob was guaranteed to be on the cast along with amber. Rich and Tina were supposed to be on the cast but they got swapped out by Nick and I THINK Ben
I've heard that Vecepia and Mike H. have both had falls from grace with the production team in their post-Survivor lives, but I agree that they would have been deserving inclusions. There are also rumors that Bob C. was touchy feely with some of the women in his season. It's too bad about Bob; I've always thought that he was an underrated winner, given how he dominated challenges and was voted as the Sprint Player of the season by fans (but I still think that Sugar should have won).

It sucks. It is what it is. Jury management is a real thing, but an unbiased jury would have definitely given him the win compared to how Natalie was simply a coattail rider.

They're supposed to vote based on 3 criteria; who outwit, who outplayed and who outlasted all the others. Russell fulfilled more of the criteria to win. While jury management is a very real thing, coattail riding to the end is a very real thing too. It is what it is. For the audience, we want to see the best player win. To the players, they just want to win, so I can't blame Natalie for doing what she did. She's just a winner who nobody cares won.

I can't agree more that island of the idols was terrible not only did the twist suck but it also screwed over good players (Jamal) and the cast sucked. Nobody out there was a real player. If Tommy played in any other season he would've been eaten alive

Natalie white would have been basically what michelle fitzgerald was to this season. A lot of people do not respect michelle but 2 for 2 in season never been voted out. I bet if natalie white came back she would have made it to a final 5 or 6 because she would not be seen as a threat.

Mr Touchdown neither of the other players were worthy, but here’s the thing- Chris played a great game... for 6 days. He did not outwit until the final 6, and did not outplay. That final 3 sucked. Again, Chris got VOTED OFF. I don’t think people should be able to come back once they are voted off. I was alright with devens, but only because he came back in the mid merge.

Survivor is a fundamentally social game about getting the people you vote out to like you and give you a million dollars. It’s about reading the other castaways, figuring out what kind of gameplay they respect, and modifying your strategy to impress the people who will decide your fate. Tommy read the other contestants like a book. He knew that there were more people in the jury who would vote for the person who made a personal relationship with them than would vote for a more dominant player in terms of challenges and advantages. He built relationships with the other contestants and leveraged those relationships for information, and ultimately jury votes. He created a situation where he never needed to win immunity or find hidden advantages. It wasn’t flashy gameplay, but it was no less impressive than a player like Tony Vlachos one Rob Mariano. Tommy manipulated an island full of people into giving him a million dollars for just hanging out with them for a month. He never had to intimidate or force people. He just listened to them, figured out what made them tick and played them like a fiddle. Season 39 had interesting gameplay and a meticulous and strategic winner. His game was subtle, nuanced, different, and ultimately pretty interesting to watch.
Lyeon Bai yeah the politics of season 39 turned me off. I finished the season, but the racial politics and the sexual harassment... I tune in for Survivor! I want to see good gameplay! Outwit, outlast and outplay!! - Good gameplay speaks for itself. That’s how it should be!
Well that’s what I tune in for. I want to be entertained. I want to see an adventure! I want to see heroes and villain’s mix it up! Many people would probably call Russel a villain for the way he played but man was he entertaining to watch! Loved it!!

How can you call David vs Goliath passive gameplay? In that season, you’ve got the first correct use of an idol nullifier, the first time a minority alliance successfully split their vote, several correct idol plays, a fake idol play, several blindsides throughout both the pre- and post-merge, and a perfectly timed immunity run. That cast was at each other’s throats the entire game and they innovated the strategic aspects of the game more than most recent seasons.

This has been one of THE BEST RUclips videos I've seen you do, Russell. I really appreciate how you've matured, and how you take ownership of your dark days. That said, I agree with everything you said. About Richard Hatch: he is an intelligent man, but he's NOT a smart man. Ever since the Sue Hawk debacle, he's never been on Survivor again. A lawsuit ensued, Sue Hawk against the world, but she finally got over it and dropped it. I don't blame her for what some people call her "overraaction" to Hatch's penis accidentally brushing her thigh in the Challenge. She feels the way she feels. But here's who I blame: CBS should never have allowed Hatch to play the challenges naked. It's completely uncalled for. He's an idiot. In my opinion, I think it's abusive for his Tribe to have to see his penis everyday, day in and day out. There's no need for his nudity. He's crying out for attention. He gets it all right! I don't think CBS will EVER allow him on the show again because even if they make him sign a NO NUDITY clause, he'll blow it off and strip down DURING the filming. And there's another "incident" on their hands. It was hard enough for CBS to decide when to yank the touchy-feely Weinstein Wannabe off Season 39! Can you imagine trying to control Hatch? He'd strip down, get pulled, and enjoy his 37 day paid vacation at a local hideout on the CBS dime! He'd be laughing at CBS for being so stupid to have him on again. I'd love to see Hatch on the show, don't get me wrong. I think he's hilarious. And the editing blurs out his penis so I don't have to look at it! It's really too bad he's such an idiot. @@reubenmanzo2054 I don't know what possessed Hatch to do the Challenge buck naked. He's an exhibitionist, for sure. It was a very physical challenge! A network of intersecting 2-6 planks were placed over a pond. The Survivors had to get from Point A to Point B to win points, and many times this meant you faced off with a Survivor from the other Tribe. You had to inch around each other, much like Everest climbers going UP have to inch around climbers going DOWN on the Hillary Step! . A single file 6" path, with a 10, 000 ft drop on one side and 8,000 ft drop on the other!; Anyway, Richard's Johnson was flippin" and floppin' everywhere. One mistake and he could've ripped it off on the 2x6 as he fell into the drink. Survivor SHOULD NOT allow nudity in Challenges especially. In camp, it's annoying, offensive and laughably pathetic. But in a physical challenge, it's outright insane. That's how Sue Hawk got "touched" by the Flying Johnson. It took her a day and a half to process the encounter, then SHE BLEW A GASKET. Sue Hawk, for all she seems so TOUGH & ROWDY is really a very sensitive woman.

I don't have a problem with anyone on season 40 being on season 40. Sarah Lacina is actually one of the more interesting players. As for the thing with Richard's penis in season 8, my impression was that it was deliberate, not accidental. I don't have a problem with seeing it as long as I don't have to touch it.

GingerNinja she gets a GREAT winner's edit and it looks like Chicken will go home the first tribal but then it turns out he has an idol! Francesqua goes first again. There is an edge of extinction and it's looking to be a Natalie situation, she is totally going back in with her 6 idols but then at the end, Chicken wins to get back in the game and makes the final 3. It's him, Coach and Phillip in the ftc. Of course it'll be a blowout, Coach HAS to win. Phillip did nothing and Chicken got voted out. suddenly, Jeff rigs the vote because his husband, Massachusetts Rob once had a pet chicken. Everyone votes for Chicken except for Francesqua, who votes for Jeff. Cochran wins the season.

This is awesome! I didn’t know you had a RUclips! I’m a new survivor fan and just recently started watching the past few years. But while in quarantine I have gone back and binge watched past seasons. I recently binged both of your seasons and must say I was extremely impressed. To go back to back seasons and know where the vote was going to land every tribal says a lot about the great game you played. You deserved both of wins. You played in a time where the game was very personal. If you played in recent years, I believe you would have won. You honestly impacted and changed the game. After you, the game slowly progressed to a more cutthroat game and juries have become more respectful to good game moves.
You know what would of been awesome to watch?
If Russell did win Samoa and Richard was was invited to play next season and Russell and Richard started in the same tribe.

I miss Russell’s game play. I mean, what a legend: First to sabotage his own tribe, first to find numerous idols without clues...brilliant. I like Natalie, but Russell should have won. I think the Samoa jury was the beginning of bitter juries not awarding Sole Survivor to the most deserving person. Russell, you are in good company. Sometimes I look at the final four of all seasons and can name at least 13 who deserved to win over the eventual winner. Dominic, Rick Devens, David Wright, etc. I could go in and on....
True about Russell getting for Survivor Samoa but that was definitely not the start of butthurt juries giving it to the least deserving person, it actually started with the 2nd season, Survivor Australia, if u ask me where the Jury gave it to Tina who basically did nothing, instead of Colby.

MJS Lawrence Rich was called and he accepted. CBS then called him a few days later telling him he wouldn’t be there. They did the same to Tina (the winner from season 2). Huge mistake and the people that replaced them were even voted off early.
Bottom Pop Rob was guaranteed to be on the cast along with amber. Rich and Tina were supposed to be on the cast but they got swapped out by Nick and I THINK Ben
I've heard that Vecepia and Mike H. have both had falls from grace with the production team in their post-Survivor lives, but I agree that they would have been deserving inclusions. There are also rumors that Bob C. was touchy feely with some of the women in his season. It's too bad about Bob; I've always thought that he was an underrated winner, given how he dominated challenges and was voted as the Sprint Player of the season by fans (but I still think that Sugar should have won).

They're supposed to vote based on 3 criteria; who outwit, who outplayed and who outlasted all the others. Russell fulfilled more of the criteria to win. While jury management is a very real thing, coattail riding to the end is a very real thing too. It is what it is. For the audience, we want to see the best player win. To the players, they just want to win, so I can't blame Natalie for doing what she did. She's just a winner who nobody cares won.

I can't agree more that island of the idols was terrible not only did the twist suck but it also screwed over good players (Jamal) and the cast sucked. Nobody out there was a real player. If Tommy played in any other season he would've been eaten alive

Natalie white would have been basically what michelle fitzgerald was to this season. A lot of people do not respect michelle but 2 for 2 in season never been voted out. I bet if natalie white came back she would have made it to a final 5 or 6 because she would not be seen as a threat.
