I have a series of images I call " Things We Walk By Everyday" to keep my eye fresh & notice the world around me.... I find order in chaos, people walking through my frame, trees, clouds, architecture, construction sites etc.... whatever catches my eye.... Like a meditation walk with my camera.....

You are right about black and white photography. You have to think in black and white, visualise black and white, and leave the house intending to take black and white. Simply desaturating a few colour photographs to explore that niche won't cut it.

I always have a bin bag and a festival poncho in my backpack. You can lay on it if the ground when it's wet or dirty. You can put your backpack in it, or even cut some holes for you head and arms, and put it on like a rain poncho for cases when it starts to chug down.

These are some of the things that bring most creativity, to be honest. I am a little saturated of seeing fully sharp landscapes from the bottom of your toe to the horizon.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. By the way, you came out with cool images in this video. The black and white of the pools is stunning,

Once again, I just packed the DSLR with the 35mm prime, once again, my younger sister says, "Let's go to the nature reserve today!" No joy with the bald eagles in the tree, but I think I've got some nice wetland-with-interesting-skies frames I can work with. :)
Laughing in "Wow, I'm old." Black and white used to be all we had, to the point I can look at something in color on my viewfinder and "see" it in B&W. For those who can't, setting your live-view in monochrome mode will help. If you're not familiar with him, do look at the landscape work of Sir Don McCullin. It's pretty amazing.

Having done many years of film photography, I tend to reserve a day out and about using with my digital with just one lens, taking a specific number of photos (24 or 36 as in film) and doing it totally in manual mode. It makes me more aware of what's going on in front of the camera. Cheers to you and your videos.

My suggestion would be to use a lens that is normally not your "go to" for a specific subject. Like using my 600mm lens for coastal landscapes or (trying) to photograph birds using a 14-24mm. The results are often so refreshing 😊

I watched your entire Advent series and have been subscribed for about two years. I am envious of your relative nearness to so many scenic areas. I live in Nebraska USA, which by most accounts is a Fly-Over state dead center of the contiguous United States. Mostly the southern half of the state is flat, nearly treeless farm ground. To the north of me there is a geological formation that covers most of the northern part of the state called the Sandhills. Covered with native grasses, cattle, your version of sheep, and few people and wildlife, if you count the local taverns {pubs) at night. Twice a year we get the Sandhill crane migration with hundreds of thousands of birds just about two miles from my doorstep but the closest mountain areas are over a 10 hour drive to Colorado or Wyoming.
I'm not complaining just envious. I am a retired mostly portrait and wedding photographer and do like your down-to-earth presentation style...Keep it up and safe travels!

Tip #1 reminds me that five of the most timeless and satisfying images over 40 years of shooting came from 6 hours spent walking back and forth along a 3-block long back-alley between two streets lined with homes. That deliberate limitation of space made me pay more careful attention to changing light through the day, and my feelings changed as I re-visited the same area multiple times. I never would have seen some of those wonderful images if I had strolled through once looking for a masterpiece and then moved on. Also, I only had 50 and 35mm lenses.

Great to have you back Henry. I know it's only been "5 mins" since the end of your advent series and despite the crap weather, it's great to see you. I will definitely try your B&W tip when I am out next to try and avoid that disappointment in post when converting an colour image to B&W. Plus, if it looks good in B&W in the field there is every chance the RAW file could look even better in colour! Well maybe...

Yes shooting in the rain and water drops on the lens! If it is not blowing a gale a lens hood helps a little sometimes. I have been one of your followers for quite a while now and can not recall ever seeing you using a lens hood, why not? OK it probably is not feasible when using filters. One photographer suggests a lens hood is the number one accessory as it helps protect the lens front element and also helps minimize any flare..

And by the way, after that pedantic rant on "The Art of Photography" LMAO, and ... ... Oh, Happy New Year Henry! Thanks for another excursion into the world through your lens. As a fellow practitioner I commend your efforts. As much as I may fantasize about making my own videos, I don't have the determination to DO IT, and as jealous as I am, to trek through the Lake District with my camera, I will likely never have the chance, though, I'd happily drag you through Death Valley or along the Oregon coast, or into Yosemite if you were to find yourself over this side of the pond before I shuffle off this mortal coil. I'm NO Norwegian Blue, nor am I nailed to my perch... 🤣🤣🤣... and I haven't yet snuffed it, so the offer remains.

I quite like to use all of those Henry, but I also do things like limiting myself to using only one setting, for example will only use say f5.6 and then work with the ISO and Shutter speed, or may switch it around but sticking to the one setting and working around it with the others and see what I get. Sometimes it is a load of rubbish, but now and again something hits! 😁

I use a GFX camera which only shoots about three frames a second and sometimes I'm trying to capture wave at the right moment with a slow shadow speed so literally it is three photos in three seconds, but it is better to shoot in burst mode as you will often find one of the images captures the moment. Better, if you think about it, wedding photographers, do this all the time, and many other photographers do, there's no reason why you can't use continuous burst mode in landscape Photography it works really well. With altering shadow speeds, I think you've gotta go one way or the other. You either capture it perfectly sharp or you go really blurry with it where it's deliberately made blurry don't kind of go in the middle because then it looks like a mistake. When I do black-and-white, Photography is when the light is too harsh to try and control it, so I then use the light as a form of creating shadows and drama

Such genuinely useful advice Henry. The 3rd one in particular hit home with me. Always trying to climb over the most arduous routes to get THE view and in the process wandering past less obvious but still worthwhile compositions. Sometimes we don't look close around us enough.
I did this at Glen Affric recently. I was so set on the big scenes (which the weather killed off anyway) that I almost ignored everything else and ended up empty handed, without a killer shot after a long day.

I like to shoot natural landscapes and urban cityscapes. What you are describing are good exercises for up and coming photographers.
Getting out and shooting with a single prime lens all day or weekend long is an exercise straight out of photography school. It really helps build your composition skills.
Hard to do for a natural landscape photographer, but spending a day or weekend shooting only things that are a certain color or shape is another great composition exercise.
But may favorite is still getting out there with the 70-200mm on a tripod shooting natural landscapes as panoramic shots.

As always, an inspiring video full of verve from you Henry. Perhaps it is important to emphasise that when photographing in raw format, despite the monochrome preview in-camera, you record raw colour photos that contain only the included JPEG in black and white, but still allow subsequent colour processing. This of course also allows a differentiated black and white conversion from the colour photo in post processing.

You just can't beat an afternoon squelching around in soggy boots Henry! I really liked the mono shot, that would probably have made a great drone composition as well. I find myself doing more black and white photography. I love it, but I have by no means mastered it. I also sometimes shoot in Infra red (using an IR72 filter), and that makes for good black and white conversions.
I also enjoy deliberately taking myself out of my comfort zone to shoot different subjects from my normal landscape work. So in a couple of weeks I shall be in Venice doing mostly urban/canal/night photography, but also I'm thinking an opportunity to seek micro scenes.
Keep up the great work Henry, and thanks!

Great tips here. I try to advise this stuff when I visit camera clubs for judging. If someone has deliberately done something a bit out there, but artistically balanced and aesthetically pleasing, then I will award it, just to make the point, technically perfect is not always the way to go. good stuff, Henry. I, on occasion on a deliberately over exposed monochrome will see if the subject allows, add a soft hardly there white vignette... Doesn't always work. Who says vignettes have to be dark?

I always have my viewfinder and live view set in monochrome mode and concentrate on textures, lines and shapes. You can see the colour of the landscape with your eyes - you can only see B & W in the camera so I get both options when shooting and it makes you think differently about your image and compsition. The RAW file will of course be in colour so you don't restrict yourself. However, if you only shoot jpeg and you switch to mono you will only have a monochrome jpeg which you can't change to colour.

    • @isee3294
      @isee3294 7 месяцев назад

I am the same. I save raw and jpeg so then I have a reminder of what it was I was seeing in the viewfinder, and then I can do a quick comparison of whether I prefer the image in colour or monochrome. I then have the option to edit the raw file to suit. Having set my camera up like this has made such an improvement to my compositions and to me even finding what kinds of photos I an drawn to taking.

I’m pleased that say I already use four of your tips with only shooting In Monochrome left out as my cameras doesnt allow it, I can only edit into Monochrome after shooting albeit in camera or Lightroom but I do feel I loose a lot of contrast that way. I’m toying with the idea for buying a Pentax K3mii monochrome but im not sure if I would use it enough to justify the cost, a monochrome sensor does appeal though.

If you all strive for is technical perfection then I think photography can become frustrating very quickly. I think it's good to embrace imperfections from time to time as you can enjoy the process of experimenting and learn about extending your boundaries. Yes we all want the perfect image however the reality is perfection to one person could be imperfect to another as long as you're happy and enjoy the experience then everything else is a bonus. Hope the trip is going well and if you see John Locke then watch out for the Smoke Monster 🙂

Agree with the black and white. I find when on colourless days, when the sky is a sheet of concrete, thankfully raw images often pick up subtle tones when shifting the photo to black and white and offers up rekindled interest in an otherwise bland image. Cracking photo's as always Henry - perhaps a sixth tip - don't be afraid of the weather!

Good tips and great way to kick off 2024. A kind of limitation I placed on myself towards the end of 2023 was using some very old cameras circa 20 years old. The limitation was also liberating and made photography using those cameras fun. Within the limits of the older technology it was surprising (or in some respects unsurprising) the quality of the images those cameras can produce and allow a good deal of latitude editing their RAW files. I will carry on using them throughout 2024 as well as my OM system OM5.

First time watching your videos and I must say it was a treat.
Since you asked, one of the tips I would offer is while you're out shooting panorama's, use your photos panorama option to shoot a back up panorama as well. Then you have more than one set to choose from (One or more sets from the phone and camera (think Nikon d3200)) in post-production.
Another tip is to take more photos than you think you need. Unless you're shooting on physical film you needn't worry as much about the number of stills you're using, right? Take advantage of that. You can always sort them out of the pile at the end of the trip before post-production if they're bad.
Lastly, kind of linked to the last tip, take photos in between filming or while you're walking too. Can't tell you how many photographers I've watched on RUclips that spend a long time getting one shot, but in their videos they missed taking so many wonderful and unique scenes while crying, "there's nothing to shoot" followed closely by, "I only got 2 photos out of that WHOLE trip" and they were gone for most the day...

If you want to limit yourself, shoot film. Specifically black and white film. You learn to think in tones, embrace imperfections and if you learn to develop it yourself, get a truly immersive experience. It's fun too.

For my B&W photography, I will still photograph in colour because it still gives me the flexibility if I change my mind. However, that rarely happens because I usually have a vision of the photo in B&W in my mind.

Pretty sure I was just out shooting the same day as you lol. Might not have been the same day but I Went up Reston Scar near Staveley. And yeah like you said has been grim lol, got some fun sheep pics though so it's all good.
Also I Gotta say as a Lancastrian it's lovely seeing you go out locally in these 'naf' conditions, gets me inspired to go out shooting more especially because it's not going cost loads in travel

I have a question for someone like me living in the rainy Pacific NW. How weather sealed is safe? How much rain can a modern dslr and lens actually take without issues? (I already keep my hot shoe cover on all the time)

Sorry I don’t know the answer but I have mine out in all sorts of rain but maybe I’ve just been lucky 😂

It was great to have you back in 2024. Another great and entertaining video, and thanks for putting up with that atrocious weather.

Oh noes, the torn eyecup! Mine did the same thing. These stock eyecups on the Z7 are just terrible. I ended up replacing mine with a much sturdier 3rd party one.

    Hi Henry,
1st let me say I'm a big fan and enjoy your channel a lot, so thanks for your content.
I have a couple of questions...
    1. Could you possibly talk a little about where you focus and why.
    2. Maybe let us know about your post processing work flow. The final images you show are great but they look quite different to the actual scene we can see when you're on location, so what do you do in post to achieve this.
    Cheers,
    Tony from Barnsley.

Intimate and mono photography is exactly what my videos have been about recently and those salt water pools are perfect for mono studies - the milky water already looks like it's a long exposure and it's a great shot (as is your shot of the gate - gates provide brilliant focal points). Really enjoyed these shots, Henry. We should do a colab some time. We have vast salt-water marshes around the Norfolk Coast. Bring the Bluejay to East Anglia....

Great tips, i was ironically thinking of doing a prime only or a manual focus only outing. Maybe more of a suggestion for wet areas is fresh socks and/or plastic storage bags as alternative to welly’s (low weight alternative).

Happy New Year Henry, I do this sort of thing quite often, certainly makes you think differently. Nice to see your weekly videos back after an excellent advent series 👍🏻

Happy New Year, Henry. Good to have you back.
Like the black and white photos, especially the one of the gate you took several weeks ago.
I sometimes like to experiment with quite long exposures using filters to get streaking clouds for a bit of a change. It all adds to the pleasure of learning on the day out.
Looking forward to the trip, whatever it may be.

Top tips Henry, some I already apply (so that's good to know) and some I'll keep in mind for another day. Happy new year mate, thanks for all the effort you put in to sharing.
