The funny thing about Return of the Living Dead is that if you strip out all of its comedic moments it stands as one of the most terrifying versions of an undead outbreak ever conceived. It is virtually uncontainable, the 'victims' retain their minds and memories but now with the caveat of continuous pain and torment, nothing short of complete destruction will stop them including their bits and parts, it affects animals as well as humans, and they aren't slow either.
so true. Thinking you're getting rid of something by cremating it only to make the situation 1000x worse. I also remember thinking as a kid "Would the military really do that?"
Actually, as much as I laughed when I saw this in the movies in summer 85, I think it was, it really did scare me a bit. I was by myself for this one (I worked at the theater so I popped in to watch after work), and the scene where they nuke everything and you hear Freddy echo "TINA" as the screen freezes will always stick with me.
@@jbjacobs9514 yeah I think the freeze frame still makes it somewhat scary too.
This was one of the first movies that I ever rented as a kid, and I was too young to notice the humor-only the horror aspects. The futility of the situation with unstoppable zombies hunting you down to eat your brains and the even worse prospect of somehow becoming one truly terrified me. When I watched it again in my 20s, I finally picked up on the humor. To this day RotLD is one of my favorite horror movies.
Exactly - it was just chilling in that moment. I am a kid of the 70s so nukes freak me out on a massive scale - that in addition to a freeze frame and the echoing just was crazy. The balance of that with the hilarity of killing the cadaver and also Tar Man getting his head knocked off helped ease the fear though. hehe@@Bastiondar
The scene where the girl first sees the zombie in the basement, they wouldn't let her see the costume, so her reaction was absolutely genuine.
Also she didn't know the step was gonna break so that was genuine also.
@@jamesdamiano8894 Yeah and also she didn't know it was a movie. They made her believe there was a real zombie apocalypse.
@chandllerburse737sounds like my sex life.
@@JaggedMercenary And of course to complete the illusion they dropped an actual nuke on Louisville.

Frank is the best character. He didn't want to hurt anyone even when he became undead.
I also think he is hilarious in this movie.
Many of us first got to know him as the Pathmark supermarket spokesman in television commercials. Then we saw him in Poltergeist and out minds were blown. Mr. Karen made this movie for me.
Very true.
Frank is the GOAT.
There’s a great little foreshadowing.
When Ernie’s dumping the bags into the furnace, he says “some favor, I can work that furnace myself…” or something similar.
@@SteveOfTheDead Rip James Karen
This is the first Zombie move to ever speak of eating brains. Ever since this movie that is the #1 zombie trope.
Correct. I would actually describe it as somewhat of a pop-culture misconception, as relatively few zombie films use the trope of zombies specifically going after brains. However, most jokes and parodies involving zombies invoke the trope. In Zombieland 2, Woody Harrelson's character at one point makes a joke referencing the trope--despite the fact that neither of the Zombieland films actually use the trope. (They follow the more traditional idea that zombies go after human flesh, not brains specifically.)
@@Kylopodwasn't the first zombie movie about voodoo zombie servants or something? Pretty interesting to see how the concept of zombies changed over the years
@@cthulhuspawn6290 You're talking to a hardcore zombie nerd. (Nerd about zombies, not nerd who is a zombie, just FYI.)
You're right--zombies was originally a reference to Voodoo folklore, and in very old zombie movies--prior to 1968, when George Romero's Night of the Living Dead came out--a zombie was a creature that was a resurrected dead person being controlled by someone else.
In the 1968 movie, however, the creatures arise spontaneously from the grave and are out to feast on human flesh. The word "zombie" is never used in the film. (Several of the characters refer to the creatures as ghouls.) But soon fans of the movie began calling the creatures zombies, and it had the effect of changing the meaning of the word in popular culture. Today, when people talk about zombie films, they are almost always referring to creatures somewhat derivative of the ghouls from the original Night of the Living Dead.
In the 1978 sequel Dawn of the Dead, Romero acknowledged the transition by having one of the main characters--who says his grandmother practiced voodoo--describe the undead creatures as zombies. However, it's only in one single line; none of the other Romero films use the word. And there's kind of become a tradition of zombie movies where the characters never utter the Z-word. In the 28 Days Later movies, it's a viral disease called the Rage virus causing living people to behave somewhat like zombies. In The Walking Dead TV series, every group of survivors has a different word for the creatures, with the main group calling them walkers.
Until Night of the Living Dead, zombie movies were rooted in voodoo and stuff like that. It wasn't until Romero brought the idea that it was a virus or something that reanimated them did it change and become what we know as the modern zombie. Boris Karloff and others did zombie movies in the 30s. @@cthulhuspawn6290
Without this film we wouldn’t have Plants vs Zombies.
A producer saw them rehearsing the nude dancing scene and freaked out, so she had to shave her downstairs, but then certain parts were too visual then so they designed a cover for her downstairs that basically gave her the visual anatomy of a barbie doll. Fun stuff.
Allegedly, after shaving, the producer freaked out and shouted "Oh, god, it's worse! You can see EVERYTHING!"
One of the classics.
"Send more cops!"
“Send more paramedics..”
lets not forget "you know i love you but i just want to eat your brain"
Paramedics are tastier.
So zombies invented uber eats instant brain delivery, guaranteed fresh in 30 minutes or its free
"MOAR BRAINZ!!"
I wish they would of kept tarman's original Cobra Commander voice
And that confederate army zombie's skeletor voice
It matches more assuming their vocal cords got warped from decaying
LOVE this movie, Legendary Scream Queen Linnea Quigley as 'Trash'
I always loved how Frank at the start keeps talking about things like "typical army fuck up.." but then when talking about the barrel he says "are you kidding, it was built by the army corps of engineers!" 😂
"Trash" was played by Linnea Quigley, who has starred in dozens of low budget horror movies and proudly wears the title of "scream queen."
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers probably being the pinnacle of her career. :)
Her boobs starred in 'em you mean!.
Night of the demons is a yearly classic!
@@habitsrabbit Complete with Linnea Quigley's boobies and pubies. :)
"Scream queen"? More like Skin Queen
I have an irrational fear that the Tar Man will be at the bottom of my cellar stairs when I turn on the light.
Literally the best/creepiest zombie I've ever seen!
I thought is was just me.
I saw this movie when I was only 5 years old. I had to block that image out of my head to ever go down into a basement.
MORE BRAINS!!!!
Stop it 😳🙈
Yes! My top favorite zombie flick. A small detail of foreshadow some people miss is the reason the cadaver from the freezer runs straight for Burt is because Frank and Freddy are already dead and reanimated. Plus I do like the nod of the two characters named Burt and Ernie 😂
Linnea Quigley (Trash/Naked girl) was an 80’s B-movie scream Queen, who’s naked in almost every movie she was in. It’s possibly in her contract she has to do a shower scene.
Another RUclips channel makes a running joke about it.
HELL YEAH 😂
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy, the day has finally come.
I feel like I hit the lottery when I requested this movie because they also incorporated part 2 in the same week. She'll have fun for sure on this one.
This is my all time favorite movie, so fantastic request. Thank you!
Great pick. One of my favorites
Loved this movie as a kid, thanks for suggesting it
Awesome:)
Part two was always my favorite simply because you had the kid dealing with stuff. Made me realize hey I can do this 😜😂😂👍🏾
The irony of Ernie being the first to realize Freddy is dead, then spending an entire movie trying to kill an already dead guy (Weekend at Bernie's).
" LET ME GO BERNIE ,
I ALWAYS LIKED YOU BERNIE "
MOB BOSS VITO :
" what the HELL were they

PAULIE :
" I'd rather not say

Oh, my God, you're right!🤣🤣🤣 I grew up watching Weekend at Bernie's on repeat- I practically burned through our VHS cassette!! 📼 😂
The behind the scenes making of this movie is almost better than the actual movie. This was one of three movies that made my childhood self a huge fan of Linnea Quigley (the others being Night of the Demons and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama).
OOhh, Sorority Babes. Excellent!
The opening of that canister basically released a curse that can never be stopped. The only way to fully destroy the cadavers is to burn them, but that just released the trioxin from the bodies into the atmosphere. It cannot be stopped. This movie used to scare me when I was a kid, but now it's my favorite zombie movie of all time.
James Karen (Frank) was the guy that built the homes over the graveyard in Poltergeist

The answer is, yes, Linnea's breasts were augmented, and she's wearing a codpiece kind of thing so she isn't ever totally naked. I've met her and she's surprisingly petite. Probably 5 feet on a good day. There was some criticism of the director (from her mostly) for making her spend most of the film topless. In fact the director also apparently did a take of the girl falling through the stairs without warning her about it first. He later apologized, saying it was his first film and he could have done better. Oh, and some of the brains being eaten by the zombies were real cow brains. The director, Dan O'Bannon, wrote and/or direct several other very good films: Alien, Total Recall, Lifeforce, etc. He and John Carpenter were classmates at film school.
O'Bannon+Carpenter= Dark Star!!👍
Lifeforce is awesome.
14:50 Her green suit catch is something I never paid attention to, and I seen this movie over 50 times, you’d learn something new every day.
Tar Man looked freaking AWESOME 😍
I used to work with someone in a zombie band called "Send More Paramedics"
Awesome, lol
Great band!!!
Thanks for reacting to our movie! We hope you had fun with this absolute classic! We'll reach out to give an extra special thank you.
On behalf of Roky Erickson, I applaud you. Burn The Flames
As someone else has said in the comments, Suicide (The punk that got killed by Tar Man) was Vic in Friday the 13th Part V. He killed Joey with the ax.
Same here! Party Time, and Tonight We Make Love Till We Die by SSQ. This movie had a great soundtrack.
The guy who played Spider was in Part V as well.
Linnea Quigley is 80s horror royalty, with many roles like this. But to me, above all else she'll always be Spider in Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama 😁
Linnea Quigley who played Trish is from my hometown
Fun fact: the actress who plays Trash just decided she wanted to be nude and dance on that grave, and everyone involved just had to deal with it. They had to reshoot the scene 2 twice because the producer said and I quote " you can't show public hair on TV", so the actress shaved, and they realized that was worse. So they made her a thing to cover her genitals and that's what made it into the movie.
"Public hair?"
Well, she actually dyed her pubic hair first to match. :)
Linnea Quigley was a nude dancer. So it was no big deal. Casey, played by Jewel Shepard, was also a stripper.
Good to know.
I don't think Linnea Quigley did one movie from 1977 to 2003 where she didn't take her clothes off. This, as far as anyone can tell, is by personal choice.
I, for one, am not complaining.
Thom Matthews is really cool. I met him at Scarefest here in Kentucky. He was part of the Friday The 13th reunion. He and C.J. Graham "Jason" part 6 were there. C.J. is awesome too.
Relax ,have fun and just enjoy the ride. Lmao. Your about to watch what most consider their favorite zombie movie of all time, for many reasons...the comedy, the nudity, lol, the effects, the characters, the silliness, and the actual sense of horror and dread!!! This is THE ZOMBIE MOVIE!!!!
The guy under the table is another example of how back in the day they kind of relied on the low resolution of vhs, tvs and even the theaters to cover up little mistakes like that.
Hellraiser is another movie that you notice puppeteers in a scene because of higher resolutions nowadays. At the end there's a big monster chasing Christy down a hallway and you can see the people pushing it from behind. But you didn't see them on the vhs version, they were obscured by the low resolution.
Frank makes this movie. His freak outs are HILARIOUS!!!
I'm perfectly comfortable.
Says Mr Movies with a pillow across his lap.
Lolz
Saw this in the theater when I was 16. A great age for a fun movie like this. My friends and I have been quoting this since 1985.
Top 10 right here. The dude that plays Suicide is also a Friday the 13th alumni. He was the patient in part 5 that chops up the kid with the candy bar.
Fun Fact Ernie is a (because I don't now what will get my comment deleted by YT) bad guy from WW2 in hiding and there are a few hints to that in is intro. The noise maker is a German Lugar, he is listening to a song popular for marching by those people during WW2, also he has some WW2 imagery in the background.
And a picture of Eva Braun. I mean, that's a dead giveaway.

Linnea Quigley isn't naked for no reason. In the '80s, it was a given that horror movies were R-rated and all that meant. In the 21st century, it's rare.
And now new b films are boring as hell
Linnea Quigley is never naked for no reason. Linnea Quigley spent over 25 years of her film career getting naked in every movie she ever did. This was apparently by personal choice.
What I'm saying is that Linnea Quigley is the Chuck Norris of nudity.
I met the cast. Linnea still looks amazing for being over 60. Allan Trautman who played the tarman is over 7 ft tall and also played Fran on Dinosaurs!
And I think he can still do the walk too. It can NOT feel good on old bones.
This has always been one of my faves. It's one of those movies that I can watch over and over again!
Dan O'Bannon is probably the most underrated writer in the history of cinema.
His brother, Rockne S. O'Bannon, was the executive producer of the reboot of Battlestar Galactica.
Bit of trivia, from the Movie. There's a theory that the character Ernie was secretly a WWII German soldier. He was listening to German Music, carried a Luger pistol and had German Posters on the wall of his Crematorium, including Eva Braun.
And the actor himself is Jewish, so he was likely keenly aware of this fact.
"Whaddya' think this is all about, you think this a fcking costume? This is a way of life."
Yes!!! This is my favorite movie across ALL genres of movies.
Me too!!
My favorite character in this is Burt, played by the legendary Clu Gulager. He's such a badass in this.
"Nudy Judy... Ronald McDonald!" -- LOL! 🤣🤣🤣
the joke about getting the skeletons from India is a nod to Poltergeist where in one scene they used real skeletons imported from India because it was cheaper at the time to do so then to have fake realistic skeletons built. I believe it's a pool scene where there's a pool full of skeletons and one of the character basically drowning in dead bodies.
Oh hell yeah! It's about time. Hands down the best zombie movie from the 80s. There's so many funny moments in this movie. And, who can forget Linnea Quigley's cemetery dance. If you watch enough B-movie 80s horror, you find out that she had no problem getting naked in front of a camera. She's definitely one of the overlooked hotties of the 80s. Any chance you two will watch "Night of the Creeps"?
"I HIT THE F**KING BRAIN!"
She was wearing a bald patch down there
@@MikeHunt90731 Yeah and with HD and Blu-ray it's pretty obvious. She still looked good though. Nice and perky.
i was 10 when this came out. I loved it. The "more brains" zombie gave me nightmares for quite a while. Now when I look back and see how corny the zombie kind of looks, it just tells me, I need to show this to nephews asap, before they age out of it.
Iconic theme music. Frank has the best scream, he's a riot. Love this movie.
the main punk dude with the x hawk was also in F13 part 5 as the angry dude with the axe who killed the chubby dude at the beginning.
Mr Movies: Who was your favorite character?
Mrs Movies: I didn't like any of 'em.
🤣
19:55 I love how only now does the background music start and with a catchy beat. Signaling "Now, It's ON baby!"
In the DVD commentary, one of the filmmakers said that years before, he had noticed that almost ALL the skeletons- especially the ones with perfect teeth- came from India, so he came up with the idea of a "skeleton farm". After the release of this movie where one of the characters voices his idea, the filmmaker claims that Indian skeleton imports just STOPPED!
It was Dan O' Bannon's friend Tobe Hooper who noticed it while making Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They got the bones from India and half in jest told O'Bannon about skeleton farms in India. It really must have stuck in O'Bannon's brain over the years.
My pal Allan Trautman played the 'Tarman.' He's a puppeteer, too. 🙂
Very cool guy
Its actually a prosthesis. Its a cod piece that Lena Quigly’s wearing & not her actual bald spot. I watched an interview with her on Monstervision with Joe Bob Briggs back in the day & she said that. Great movie pick!
My favorite zombie movie. You're gonna love this.
The undertake, Ernie Kaltenbrunner: during the WW2 era, ERNST KALTENBRUNNER was a high ranking officer in the German SS and was eventually in charge of all German police forces. He was executed in 1945 for war crimes. (Hence the German march playing while he worked and that he had a Walther P38 pistol on him.)

I'm glad you enjoyed the movie, I love this movie alot, been a massive fan of it since I was a kid (not gonna lie it did make me scared of grave yards for many years after lol) I love in the movie we see the evolution of Trash and her mini journey as a zombie.

Such a great movie with a great story and cast!
A producer had Linnea shave and he learned that shaved showed more than he wanted when unshaved so they made a "shield" to cover her! :)
This was the movie that made the Zombies want brains trope!
My favorite horror movie. The beginning is set up so weird. Then the young people group is introduced, which adds a little giddy up. Their friend group is so strange, they don’t seem like they should be hanging out together but I dig it. Tarman makes his appearance, Trash gives her iconic line delivery and dance, then the zombies take over!!
This movie is CRAZY! And I love it!
The acting, attention to detail and overall amount of hard work put into this film with what they had to work with really stands out especially for a gore movie in it's era. Like Creepshow 2 I think. You can just see everyone working on this was very into this experience and giving it their all.
I love this movie classic. Cemetery boobs rule. The dog in half practical effects was so cool.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. I hate that every time I see it now I have the knowledge that Brian Peck played Scuz.
James Karen is a fucking legend. He's the boss of Craig T. Nelson in Poltergeist. "You moved the headstones, and not the bodies!!"
I love how Dan O'bannon used real life NotZee Ernst Kaultenbruner(he helped refine the furnaces for more efficiency for the Afrika Corp if I remember right) for his basis for Ernie. The picture of Eva Braun on his desk, his singing of the wartime song for the invasion of France while embalming, and his Walther pistol. I never caught on til I was older and did the research(ah the innocence of youth) and realized DOB put that much forethought and backstory into the characters. It sure puts a different perspective on why Ernie was so interested in the zombies and their feelings considering his dark past. One of the funniest and scariest movies for me growing up, the unstoppable nature of the zombies and their fast movements makes the terror in this one! Also the actor playing the punk Scuzz(Brian Peck) is in trouble for S.A against Drake from the Nickelodeon show Drake&Josh, he was a voice coach on.
Easily one of the best zombie films EVER MADE!!!
Dan O'Bannon, who wrote the screenplay and directed the film, wrote the screenplay for Alien. His brother, Rockne S. O' Bannon, was the executive producer of Battlestar Galactica.
I love these movies; they are both goofy and somehow serious. Also love how they portray the zombies and their horrible pain of being forced back to life.

God bless Linnea Quigley! She should be the patron saint of You, Me, and the Boobles.
It's crazy how this is an often overlooked B-movie comedy horror, but the actual premise when looked at for it's subject matter is legitimately fucking terrifying. This flick makes all other zombie media seem like a minor threat compared to the apocalypse unfolding in this movie. In my personal opinion, the zombies in this movie are the least survivable in comparison to every other zombie movie, TV show, video game, book, etc. It's just insane to think how inevitable your death is with this movie.
One of my favorite pieces of trivia about this movie is that Freddy wore two different jackets. One that said "Fuck you," and one that said "TV Version." For obvious reasons 😂
One of my favorite movies of all time. Glad to see you cover this one.
im stoked to watch your reaction, this is a top 5 movie for me, literally growing up me and my dad watched it every halloween and it scared me equally every halloween, it still scares me now and im 32 but i still watch it every halloween to keep the tradition alive! i love this movie! such a good soundtrack too!
"Ooh, riiht. II sapoosz itt's not tha nrwsz dell zombies that maek themm animaetd assuuminh boonsz don't haw nrwsz."
Now from the mystical/magical horror element, yes the Trioxin zombies are scary. But something about the phone calls with the Colonel planning on how to “solve the problem” terrifies me more than any scary monster.
My issue with this movie is the same issue with the whole graveyard, zombies are in a closed casket burried under 6 feet of packed dirt, not only do they have break out of the coffin but they have to push 6 feet of packed dirt. I like the Dawn Of The Dead zombie movies better.
I love that zoom shot at 22:15. They use it in one of the Tales From The Crypt episodes too.
The soundtrack in this movie makes it even better! 😎🤘🎸
