He may have been suffering from hypothermia and was removing clothes. Perhaps he was intoxicated…..if 2 people tried to get rid of him dead or alive perhaps his head went in first as planned but somehow the knees dropped at the same time and he fell in a lodger position. For me that is the only explanation. Someone moved the bar in front of the chimney to alleviate chances of anyone finding him. The clothes were possibly forgotten and left behind.

What if it was some prank gone wrong. Teenagers are dumb, what if he was there with some 'friends' and they thought "wouldn't it be hilarious to shove Josh in the chimney." He got stuck, maybe died of positional asphyxia and then they panicked and shoved the breakfast bar up against the fire place so no one would find him.
This is a theory I haven't really heard and to me it seems pretty plausible.

With Josh's body being found naked, it gives me the vibes this could have been a prank / dare / hazing of some kind. When I was a teenager I remember hearing about the kinds of dares where someone has to humiliate themselves by taking clothes off and doing other stupid things. Maybe this started out as something like that, and it just went wrong or out of hand intentionally or unintentionally.

The fact that the owner of the cabin had more interest in finding out what happened to Josh, just shows how inept and unempathetic the coroner and the police were! For goodness sakes this poor family already lost one son way to soon, they could have considered their feelings and (as Danelle said), at least labeled his death undetermined across the board. So, the police/coroner expect us to just believe a smart, bright 18 year old wanted to get into the cabin and decided that swan diving down the chimney was the logical answer? Also, if that was true, I guess he pushed all of the furniture in front of the cimney to block himself in as well. Also, all they had at that point was basically skeletal remains. They have no way to determine cause of death. It could be strangulation, drowning, etc. But they decided the most logical answer was a swan dive down the chimney?! That makes me furious. Also, people knew there was a horrible odor in the cabin for a long time. A squirrel, raccoon, mouse, etc will only smell for a very short time. So why wouldn't anyone investigate the prolonged horrible odor, especially knowing Josh was missing from just down the street?

I always thought that Josh’s death was not an accident but in fact a murder. It’s very bizarre how his bottom clothes were taken off and neatly folded next to the fireplace. I think it’s possible that he was murdered and then his death was made to look like he was sexually assaulted. To hide the evidence and what really happened to Josh, he was placed into the chimney. This is a case that I don’t think will ever be solved due to the corrupt police force back when this case was being investigated. I think the person who was responsible for killing Josh is Andy. He could’ve witnessed something he wasn’t supposed to so he had to be killed, but in a really weird way.

  • @ghxst-id
    @ghxst-id Год назад +31

There's a term called "terminal burrowing" aka "hide-and-die" syndrome that can occur in lethal hypothermia. Victims are also found without most or all of their clothing on. That gives this an interesting perspective for me!

    • @kieramcgregor
      @kieramcgregor Год назад +4

Yes but why would the furniture be blocking the chimney? Unless like you say maybe he thought it would keep out the cold and he could push it away later and unfortunately sliding down the chimney the wrong way? But is that really logical?

    • @ghxst-id
      @ghxst-id Год назад +19

@kieramcgregor the truth of the matter is that there is no real logic when it comes to things like terminal burrowing or paradoxical undressing.
I'm not sold on this 100%, but I do also think it's worth considering that he may have been unprepared for the weather, started to become hypothermic and confused, took shelter, and then experienced both paradoxical undressing and then terminal burrowing. Maybe in him trying to "hide," it led to an accident which caused his death, and not the hypothermia specifically. Either way, the undressing is almost always a component in these cases, and it's worth mentioning that the people who end up dying from this are often mistaken for being victims of a crime because of the odd positions they are found in and the state of undress. They do it because it's the bodies last ditch effort at seeking shelter and getting warm, but it is almost always immediately followed by unconsciousness and death.
So, I'm sorta thinking that maybe he figured he knew the area well enough. He had done this before, he'd be fine, and his time out there was sacred to him... But he just failed to be aware of how the elements could sneak up on him until it was already too late. Maybe he had been too far out to start with, and it was just too late by the time he was close enough... Idk, but it lines up with the weather at the time. I know others find it weird that his clothes were folded, but I feel like it also could have been his brain attempting to respond out of some type of muscle memory in relation to the clothes coming off. And again, victims who exhibited the act of terminal burrowing due to fatal hypothermia are usually found weird spots... under beds, behind wardrobes, etc. with other furniture/objects being moved around in the space surrounding them. Another reason why sometimes these scenes look suspicious. I'm pretty sure it's occurred in people's very own homes. And though this could definitely be a different story, I couldn't help but think of those similarities here. At the end of the day it's just a very sad and tragic case all around.

When trying to get out he got stuck n died. He seemed kind because there are no stories to say otherwise plus after a close death like a brother…. All life takes on a different view! I'm not sure what your thoughts are on Missing 411 but this case seems to fit a few case points that are usually true for most cases.
I'd be curious to know if David Paulides has looked into this case.
A few case points that are usually consistent for Missing 411 cases & Josh's case:
    •National Park (Pike's Peak)
•New Moon on 3/8/08. Over 90% of cases happen during new &/or full moon phases.
•lg bodies of water (Crystal Lake, Prospect Lake, to name a few).
•granite/boulders (Pike's peak has gigantic boulders, in fact Pike's Peak itself is granite).
•neatly folded clothes, naked/almost naked body (happens often!).
I couldn't find anything unusual with the weather for 3/8 or 3/9. Most of the time Missing 411 cases involve sudden inclement weather on the days of &/or following few days.
In several Missing 411 cases it's been reported that the missing 411 began acting out of character, or irratic, just before vanishing. Josh taking his clothes off may relate to that. It's also been reported that some ppl act almost like they're suddenly hypnotized, no longer controlling their thoughts & actions. Josh may have experienced the bizarre sudden silencing of the woods that's been reported. Maybe that scared him enough into trying to hide in the fireplace.
I know these things I've mentioned sound ridiculous. I truly do. But the reality is, there are well over 1600 cases that all have most, if not all of these things, and more.
It's almost as if National Parks have invisible barriers or access points into other dimensions at certain times. I'd even go as far as to say there may be creatures or beings with supernatural abilities that cohearse people via mindspeak, or even just abduct them.
If you've never looked into it, I urge you to. Stay safe.
Again, I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's honestly one of the best explanations for what's happening regarding missing people in national parks.

I just don't see why he would try to climb up a chimney feet first, or climb down one head first. Neither one is a very optimal decision. I also don't think it would be very easy to shove someone up a chimney head first, nor do I understand how someone could have taken their clothes off trapped upside down in a chimney. It's a very strange case. I just wonder if the "neatly folded clothes" isn't a bit hyperbolic and the clothes were just piled and flattened over time due to gravity, and it just appeared to be neater than it actually was... Sadly, without knowing someone who was in the room IF someone was, or being able to speak to the kid in the afterlife, it's always going to be mysterious, sadly.

Or maybe people just don’t have anything substantial to add in terms of facts or theories but want to support and uplift someone by adding a nice comment (helps with algorithms). peeps also comment while watching/listening in “real time” 🤷🏻‍♀️ could also be a combination 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

There are always lots of amazing professionals from attorneys to detectives, higher ups in foundations and organizations like NCMEC, NCIS, etc. It is such an endless wealth of knowledge and collaboration and is so awesome to get together with like minded people.

@@DanelleHallanThis is such a good reply to a great question. True crime and its fanbase can get a bad rap sometimes or maybe the side eye from people who dont understand it. Some people argue that the true crime community is exploitative and unkind to the victims. While there are exploitative channels out there and the line between exploiting and non exploiting can sometimes be thin, its important that we illustrate all the amazing things this community can do and all the voices that would have been silenced if they had not been lifted up by the True Crime. Real life things are happening and its just amazing! True crime is so much more than its reputation sometimes affords it.

I have a vague memory of an urban legend resembling this story where a kid was messing around, sometimes with friends and sometimes alone, and fell headfirst down a chimney and ended up trapped there. It floated around for a few years, I think when I was between 10 and 13, which would have been 2004 to 2007-ish. Unfortunately I had a bout of depression about then so my memory is spotty, but I wonder if people started telling the story based on this case, which is a lot to unpack. Edit: I did a quick search and stories like this of people getting stuck in chimneys are much older, like beginning around the early 1800s or maybe earlier. I still wonder if these stories had a resurgence based on the case.

I think based on the evidence that we currently have, it could go either way. it could be a super bizarre weird accident or him hiding while experiencing hypothermia, it could definitely be foul play. we just don't have enough evidence to prove one direction over the other.
His cause of death should definitely have been left undetermined. Could have been positional asphyxia, hypothermia, dehydration or foul play but we don't have any evidence in any specific direction.

This is one of the most bizzar cases ever.
Definitely not an accident. No Way.
I tend to think the new friend was involved somehow.
And Josh was undeessed and put into the fireplace while unconscious.
    Then blocked in.
Sucomed to hypothermia during that first night.
Therefore never woke up or never regained enough strength to push his way out.
If only one person moved that bar in front of the fireplace., then one person should have been able to use their legs to push it out enough to escape.
I agree with so many others who question why the strong lingering smell was not investigated.
One damn dog could have located the source.
    LE failed this family 100%
And... I'm sorry, but the owner of the building seems sus to me.
I am guessing that he knew teens were frequenting that cabin.
Yet he never repirted anything ?
    Never questioned the smell ?
Did he never visit his cabin ?
    I guess thats possible.
It is so sad that the family has suffered such tragedy.
I am sure there has been no peace or resolution for them.
    Good presentation Danielle.

My first thought for COD was positional asphyxiation based on the position his remains were found. Would be faster than hypothermia I would think and probably more likely. Also, this sounds so much like the Harley Dilly case to me... the position of the body, the folded clothes inside the house, the abandoned house and, of course, the chimney.

I'm wondering if he was on the roof and planning to climb down via the chimney, but slipped and fell headfirst, which would explain why he was upside down. It would also explain why his pants were off; they would've rolled up as he fell down the chute. With his back almost certainly broken, I wonder if he died right away. Thoughts?
Oops, guess I should've listened longer. Now it's sounding like a prank gone wrong. Danelle has a good theory of him being blocked inside the chimney area with the breakfast bar which led to him trying to climb the chimney in desperation. But if that were true, wouldn't you expect there to be rumors about a party where this happened? Since when would a bunch of teenagers keep a secret that big to themselves?
