I LOVED the racing genre back then. These days I’m easily bored with racing games. What’s going on? Did I outgrow it or are the games just not as fun? I don’t have a single racing game on my PS5. Tried a few and was quickly checked out after a few moments.

feel like it's because games nowadays want to please all audiences and end up being shallow in every style they try to represent. We had the Tokyo Xtreme Racer franchise that brought a deep culture to the niche it represented. There was no need to add offroad cars to please everyone.
We still have an audience for this niche, just look at how popular Night Runners was, made by one person.

    • @Josh_Quillan
      @Josh_Quillan 3 месяца назад +1

That depends on perspective. If you're more focused on gameplay, that's true, you can get by on HW origiinal designs quite well, but for a hot wheels collector, the fact that HW make licenced cars is the greater part of the point of collecting hot wheels so they really need to include a fair smattering of them.

I don't think car licenses are the reason there's no new Midnight Club. As you pointed out, GTA is the top of the "racing game" charts. So, why would they waste time/money on a separate SKU? And this is coming from 40-year game dev vet who worked on; the original NFS, Jet Moto 3, Road Rash 3D0, Grand Tour and yes... Midnight Club LA. From a dollars-in / dollars-out point of view, it doesn't make sense to Rockstar, licensed cars or not.

Now, admittedly, most of those are people with potato PCs and such, but even when just looking at people capable of running the newest triple A games (using the Steam hardware survey), we actually still get really close to PS5 numbers.

Why would they? Furthermore, it's not like they don't turn around and license their cars out to get smashed up in movies too. At the end of the day, it's all just a matter of companies having inflated egos and expectations. As long as you aren't doing obviously illegal or harmful things, the customer literally does not care what your brand goal and message is if you're simply selling a product; hell, most employees don't care about that either.

Here's the thing with GTA 5/Online though...
It kinda sucks as a racing game. There's the horribly unbalanced economy, the extremely inconsistent vehicle performance, the underwhelmingly slow top speeds of even the faster cars, the traffic that steers into you, the playerbase that famously can't drive, the lack of viable shortcuts, no nitrous, nonsensical vehicle classes, lack of performance classes, almost no unique customisation options in the vast majority of cars (let alone decent options), the terrible police chases, the bland handling, the inability to drift apart from that tyre option in a few specific cars that make them terrible for everything else, the extremely low rewards for racing, no manual gearbox option, no pink slip races, extremely distant and high-up camera for newer cars, the fact that a huge amount of cars were removed from the websites, the crappy interiors and crappier dashboards, etc.
And keep in mind that Midnight Club's main selling points were the sense of speed, extremely in-depth customisation, small maps, very high difficulty, ridiculously overpowered bikes, extremely fast police, and tons of shortcuts and jumps. Things that all GTA games (apart from, debatably, 1 and Chinatown Wars) seem to go against completely.

This problem has been going on as well in ROBLOX out of all things, car brands being removed due to people contacting car manufactures, and now some big titles, like SWFL (southwest florida), are now switching to unbranded cars and making some masterpieces of fan based models that they are going to implement some time in the future. Another thing is that "realistic" games on ROBLOX have been becoming more popular, with like frontlines and some other car driving games going for the graphical and movement feel to be more realistic instead of more enjoyable for the player.

I think it’s our expectations from a game that is killing the market we desperately want. Because unless I’m the one doing the development of a game or I’m a part of it. Nothing that appeals to me or others will ever show up in the final production of a game. Because it’s deadass so hard nowadays because you basically have to please the masses or your game you made doesn’t do well at all financially.

Don't mention blur🥺also as I was watching, midnight club had the best customization. 30 inch rims, the mission that you have to deliver the cars on time without damaging, besides the licensed cars it was actually sick for it's time.

I think we need to go back to having a balance there were so many games that didnt have licensed cars and they were so fun a good recent example is Night Runners doesn't have licensed cars but its so much fun I kinda miss when we used to have so many games with non branded cars and its a ton of fun I think we should focus on making a fun Racing game from here on with or without Manufacturers

I would definitely buy more arcade racing games like Blur or Burnout if we would get more customisation and a better photoshoot potential, something like NFS2015 aesthetics or maybe cel-shaded ones, i really dont mind non-licensed as long as we have a variety like in gta with cheap hatchbacks, retro coupes and rear-engined sports cars, maybe even some rally cars too

Well certain games most definitely need licensed cars especially if they are already established titles with licensed vehicles like Gran Turismo, Forza, NFS, and even Midnight Club. I’d even argue that Blur made the right call by using licensed cars because in it’s poor marketing, what was kind of seen as a Mario Kart meets Need For Speed Underground vibe which didn’t really exist in the racing game market. Games like Split Second, and Burnout use fun gameplay and damage physics to not need real cars. However when racing games center around car culture, there is a right way and wrong way to use unlicensed vehicles. The right way to do this is the way CarX and Night Runners is doing it. Basically just use the real cars and change the name. The wrong way to do it is the way Super Street video game did it.

Licensed cars with all the customisations are real you could apply them in real life and the upgrades too
    With banger songs
Car culture and dub magazine boosted
I know we may never see something like it again but damn it was so so good

I'm glad that Split/Second has unlicenced cars, because you can still buy the game after all these years. Besides the cars in that game look really good.
I also think that having unlicensed cars allows the developers to have more creative freedom regarding their design (for example the cars from Ciberpunk 2077).

I like that some games have license cars but racing games that don't are really fun because the limits are off. I miss the crash mode in burnout. I also loved playing split second as well. Hell a dedicated GTA racing game would be nice.

We don’t need licensed cars. I think if there was a way for a racing game to have rockstar as a parent company they could do whatever they want. They are lawyered up

For me the car licensing does make or break the game for me, i love being able to use real cars in a fictional world because i know I'd never be able to have the majority in real life. Taking away that aspect just makes me feel less inclined to wanna play a racing game with knockoff cars.

Rockstar can literally make Midnight Club 5 using cars from GTA V
The customizations is already great, the car details.
Just polish a bit and give it a new maps and physics
(they can even copy the whole physics code from MCLA)
    And boom
    Midnight club 5

Nah bro, this would end up like Cal of duty route where they don't license guns & the franchise went downhil. Also this would allow publishers to charge us the same for games while paying less for manufacturing them, but not investing it in the franchise, just keeping it for themselves.

Racing games without licensed cars allows for developers to get more creative with their designs. Licensed or unlicensed cars really doesn't matter to me, I just need the game feel to be fun and smooth with great varied environments and a banging soundtrack. I much prefer arcade racing over sim/festival racers
