Kenny is one the greats and a great guy, while playing a show at the Memphis In May Music Festival he noticed a little kid about 5 yrs old sitting on his dad's shoulders rocking out! After he got done playing called the boy's dad out and talked about how he had watched the little dude rocking out and gave the little boy his Strat and told his dad to get him lessons.... coolest shit I've ever seen!
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is one of my biggest Heroes ever. It goes Grandpa, SRV, the dude that taught me how to ride a bicycle, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Noah, I share a birthday with Noah. How lucky we all are that we lived during these times. Glad I didn't miss this!
I'm 65, every once and awile the memory of my first lost love shows up to mess with me. This song triggers that emotion that I had at the time. That's ok, got through it ,been married 42 years, to my 2nd true love, Linda. Memories good and bad brighten your future. Oh, after saying that ,this song is a favorite of mine.
Blue on Black was one of my favorites. I can remember sitting on the hood of my car down by the wayside on a hot summer day listening to it over and over. It had a personal meaning when I was younger. (still does) Ive grown to appreciate Kenny more and more as an entertainer. Back then I was just the young yuppy chic with a crush on a famous guy who might just happen to her town and whisk her away.. I'm gonna learn to play this and post it later. Kenny luv ya and wont post it without a shirt!
You should have grew up in Shreveport. It was amazing. The music. The history and oh and yes Ledbetter Heights the section of town where Huddie Ledbetter roamed
i've always loved this song since when i first on the radio around middnight (or even later), and been searching for this since like there is no tomorrow.
oh yes, so nice...sung so well and the guitar feels so right when he plays it- you can go thru the solo in your head note for note when you hear the song each time cuz every note you FEEL it and your diggin it. Classic- thanks guys!
Ya'll folks making the snide comments..come on. I totally get why Kenny Wayne would want the song played correctly. I really don't think he is being a jerk about the ones who have covered the song "wrong" Hello, it is his song. I don't want to learn a crap version of such a meaningful song. The fact that he would even acknowledge he's watching others is pretty fucking humble if you ask me. I might just be another chick with an opinion. I still think an artist should apply constructive criticism
superb tune. saw this guy as a double bill with johnny lang poughkeepsie ny. one of the best 3 plus hours of music......for me anyway, since i had 1st row seats
Nice smooth jam makes me feel great playing it on my Strat. I remember chilling in the corner playing this at school on washburn acoustic. I then brought my electrics
Yes this is a over riding passion to GTAW hid down , he thing that stops ,e in my tracks , every time it playing , it speak to me , I would love to have it , blessing to all , love to all
I’m trying to learn this on piano and found this awesome lesson! Thanks for the clarification. Love the shirtless guy story, trying to find him.😂I promise I’ll wear a shirt when I upload my video. Thanks again for the lesson, love you guys and this song! Warm greetings from Miami
I saw KWS in Boston at Bank Boston Pavilion Boston. He played a song, building and building like an underground Volcano and when it erupted, (I don't say this lightly,) I Saw God.
Great song indeed! “song almost didn’t make it” I don’t know what it is or how to explain it, but certainly things like this meant to be. Gonna be a classic in the future. Simple and beautiful: The best blend. F-sharp note in the D chord issue is 100% right!!! It does make a hell of a difference. I strongly believe that when you play other’s music you must respect the fundamentals. Otherwise you distort what the author want to express and transmit. Excellent lesson to the “RUclips teachers”
Totally bad ass! I have jammed with some of the greats in my 34 years as a blues guitarist man but besides SRV there is only one other guy I would love to Jam with and that's Kenny!! This was bad ass!
@dnnysrock - If you mean that learned from John Mayer with respect to his right hand playing, this song was recorded 4 years before JM released his first album. I am not bagging on JM, but KWS was a blues star before anybody had ever heard of John Mayer. That being said, I like JM's playing style better when he plays blues.
Well, I didn't take it as cocky, just matter-of-fact. I lived in Bossier City in the 60's and learned how to play guitar there. So, I'm a cocky SOB, too...LOL...used to play gigs at the S'port Elks Club. Those were the days...Ventures, Beatles, Stones, Simon & Garfunkle, Beach Boys, Dave Clark Five, etc....
It's def a pain to mute that high E. I press the base of my index finger against the edge of the fretboard while holding the Dsus2 fingering. Takes a little gettin' used to, but it seems to work. When I look at the video, it appears that's how he's doing it as well. I think ;)
Is it just me but does anyone else think this would sound killer playing D minor, definitely not D major like Kenny said love this song it goes over well in my cover band
nowadays, for most of people , every guy who plays a strat sound like SRV ....and btw , there's worse in therm of guitar sound than be compared to SRv ! So leave him alone , he seems a cool guy , & more than an honnest player !! greetings from France
Redwhite&blue A Tychobrae Octavia or a Roger Mayer Octavia, a HW TS 808 and the Analogman King of Tone. That’s from what I’ve seen from his Rig Rundowns. I’ve seen him in person at Mohegan Sun in CT and being a guitar player myself, it was fucking awesome. Amazing tone and killer chops.
Now that I actually listened to it I don’t think he is using all of those like he normally does. Sounds stripped down and maybe just the amp drive or a TS
Kenny is one the greats and a great guy, while playing a show at the Memphis In May Music Festival he noticed a little kid about 5 yrs old sitting on his dad's shoulders rocking out! So cool
Saw him play at Memphis in May in the 90s. It was awesome.
@@timothys4804 I was there 🤘
Felt a lil emotional by this, he's amazing, plays with his heart n soul, his band, they're unique, God bless them*
I was that kid sitting on my dad’s shoulders , it was so cool. Just kidding of course.
This is a song I never get tired of hearing - it always gets me.
Pure Blues .Noah and Kenny are 100 % on point .
Killer solo! Just can't get enough of it.
I love Noah's voice
One of the best modern blues songs of our times. Great tune.
Noah is such a emotional singer...what a voice

one of the best songs ever
Love this backstory stuff! And this is a kick-ass version of this song I've always loved.
He is truly amazing, one of my favorite artists for sure (along with Joe Bonamassa)
I never get tired of playing this song either.
Been back about 40 times to watch this one.
Love this version our of everything else.... it has such a raw passion that makes it more special !
Caught KWS in Cincy when they opened for VH during the 1998 tour (sat next to Noah's family)
Awesome show

Just go to concerts. That’s what I’m doing.
i've always loved this song since when i first on the radio around middnight (or even later), and been searching for this since like there is no tomorrow.
Glad to see you still having a good time with this song.
Great lesson, and great song. Well played and sung. Thanks!
i never get tired of this song,i get i could drive from here to pheonix listening to just this song and still not get tired of it
Great voice! Sounds like the recording.
Damn good jam it is. Love playing it love hearing it. You hear it period
oh yes, so nice...sung so well and the guitar feels so right when he plays it- you can go thru the solo in your head note for note when you hear the song each time cuz every note you FEEL it and your diggin it. Classic- thanks guys!
+Jim Habash Oh ya and playing with the drummer and the snare- just like Kenny says makes it jump out )
Love KWS....the man is growing as a guitar player god bless him..!!!
i love live performances especially when its just guitars
Almost twenty years since I seen him w/ Double Trouble in San Diego. A special show.
Looking forward to next weekend at the Hard Rock.

Well said!
So he has to make fun of them and make this shirtless guy feel like a fool by making a mockery of his voice and that he’s not wearing a shirt?
Big fan of KWS, but he comes across arrogant and condescending in this video. Constructive? Seemed egotistical to me.
No he doesn’t.
Whatta great song. Wish I had the talent and ear to create music like this🙏👍😊
superb tune. saw this guy as a double bill with johnny lang poughkeepsie ny. one of the best 3 plus hours of music......for me anyway, since i had 1st row seats
Jeff Tweedy, what a voice!
Phenomenal song. Love KWS of course but Noah's voice, the best! Great hearing them talk about the D5 vs. the D. LOL!
I found you guys through 5 finger death punches cover..must have listened to your version 30 times in the last few days..frighin awesome
Nice smooth jam makes me feel great playing it on my Strat. I remember chilling in the corner playing this at school on washburn acoustic. I then brought my electrics
That solo came from that mans soul y’all I swear
This makes my soul smile!!!! Thank you..;)
God I love this..cheers for the lesson ✌🏼 🇳🇿
Kenny I like your new singer fantastic
Kewl song; love it :)
(digging out my guitar
and amp from the back
of the closet.)
Awesome video. Killer song. First heard it on the radio driving back from crawfishing. Thought, _gotta find out what this song is called._
Yes this is a over riding passion to GTAW hid down , he thing that stops ,e in my tracks , every time it playing , it speak to me , I would love to have it , blessing to all , love to all
I tune the high and low E string down to D, try that!
The left hand is the athlete, the right hand is the artist...thanks for the quick tutorial 🤘🏻
recommended this to my 13 yr old nephew, budding, next great unknown guitarist :-)
Best ....... bestest song ever.
i grew up a little in greenwood, La and right now live in Grove ok lol what a coincidence
I saw KWS in Boston at Bank Boston Pavilion Boston. He played a song, building and building like an underground Volcano and when it erupted, (I don't say this lightly,) I Saw God.
I wish he talked about the effects he uses for this track.. saw them opening for Van Halen and KWS were excellent!
i think he uses analogman king of tone and univibe for second verse and also high gain section of king of tone for solo
oh i forget about pog octave he is uses it too
What a Show that must have been. Wow
My favorite song!!
I got goose bumps
Great song indeed! “song almost didn’t make it” I don’t know what it is or how to explain it, but certainly things like this meant to be. Gonna be a classic in the future. Excellent 🤘🏻 🤘🏻
I love me some Kenny! DANG IT!
shed lets hear play or shut the fuck. up it is a demo clinic .
hmm...very nice. He's calmed down a lot. Good for him. good instructional as well. He points out rhythm playing. important.
Kenny the right hand is the most important part in playing. No matter what you play.
Hit some good Sativa beforehand 😁
Totally bad ass! I have jammed with some of the greats in my 34 years as a blues guitarist man but besides SRV there is only one other guy I would love to Jam with and that's Kenny!! This was bad ass!
And who are the so called greats that you have jammed with.......Just out of interest???
When my teacher first showed me this song, I was like, "have I ever known real music before?"
The song begins at 03:20!
Yeah, he´s right - the right hand is very important. Listen up guitar suckers! Great singer - with an attitude!
Noah’s voice is similar to Paul Rogers. Kenny and Noah are awesome together.
We miss you Kenny!! Your flame got put out way too soon!!
@numenorean7 I agree with you. you don't hear this kind of songs on the radio or any those new bands would play this kind of blues.
He kinda reminds me of John 5 when he talks hah. Killer session though!
What are the correct chords? was it D5 to start out with ?
Can some one send me an accurate tab?
Yes. D5
Awesome!!!
When my band does it, I actually Drop D . I think it gives it a little something extra . Killer song just the same !!!!!
Definitely a drop d song
❤ acoustic grunge post grunge
No high E thank you man..was driving me nuts cause I thought I had the totally wrong chord!--Did not sound like what you are playing on the CD!--Joni
wow just a awesomre
gimme a break, this kid was and is a prodigy,it has to be aggravating to see and hear people playing your song wrong.rock on k.w.
Yes!!
love kws
awesome!!!
I see the Zeppelin song in this too, not sure about the Mayer one though. Nice catch
Awesome.
awesome! thanks;)
WTF HE PLLAYED AT THE GUITAR CENTER IN PASADENA?!?! i live right there...
Yeah you missed it.
It’s around 23 yrs old which is unreal...
I love this tousled head
I’ve always muted the high string. Didn’t sound right when you play it.
I'm going to do a finger tap acoustic version, with an electric solo. Maybe he will see that. Michael Hedges and Jimi Hendrix!
what type of pedal/effect, does he use when he plays the solo? It got a fantastic tone!
its hard not to hit the high E.....theres a lot of people who miss the hell out of the whole song on the instructional videos.....give em Hell Kenny
It's def a pain to mute that high E. I press the base of my index finger against the edge of the fretboard while holding the Dsus2 fingering. Takes a little gettin' used to, but it seems to work. When I look at the video, it appears that's how he's doing it as well. I think ;)
its really not that hard to avoid the high e
Nah, use 3rd finger fretting the 2nd string to mute the first string. then you don't have to miss it with the pick... ;-)
The shirtless guy is probably me 😆
The right (picking or strumming) hand is always more important.
that solo was nice
Is it just me but does anyone else think this would sound killer playing D minor, definitely not D major like Kenny said love this song it goes over well in my cover band
New name for SRV = KWS^^
nowadays, for most of people , every guy who plays a strat sound like SRV ....and btw , there's worse in therm of guitar sound than be compared to SRv ! So leave him alone , he seems a cool guy , & more than an honnest player !!
greetings from France
sick!
I want Noah's Hendrix T-Shirt!!!!
Saw kenny wayne shepherd this past march 3rd row center balcony
Solid live version, but i think it sounds better with 1 acoustic & 1 electric like they did it on the record.
@cwieand its just a D without the F# on the high e string.
Does anyone know what effect kws is using for the lead parts?
Redwhite&blue A Tychobrae Octavia or a Roger Mayer Octavia, a HW TS 808 and the Analogman King of Tone. That’s from what I’ve seen from his Rig Rundowns. I’ve seen him in person at Mohegan Sun in CT and being a guitar player myself, it was fucking awesome. Amazing tone and killer chops.
Now that I actually listened to it I don’t think he is using all of those like he normally does. Sounds stripped down and maybe just the amp drive or a TS
@@jordandangelo180 yeah but it sounds like there's some sort of octave thing going in his leads but it's pretty subtle. Anyway thanks for the reply
