    The key lines from 4:23
    "Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man
    But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
    And so is Lola"
    Pretty clever wordplay and at a time quite brave.

As always, enjoying your take and reaction. Yeah, Top of the Pops was a big deal then. If you made it there, you got it made. Tha Kinks ended up as a very important and influential band, with quite a song catalogue. Terrific song 🎵 choice Chris!! Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕🦂

  • @lauraallen55

    I'm surprised no one's told you the story of the song. The lead singer and the backup singer are brothers: Ray and Dave Davies. The Kinks were one of the most influential bands of the 60s, along with the Who.
    The Kinks and their young manager went out drinking one night and their manager got quite drunk (as did the rest) and spent the majority of the night in the club dancing with a cross dresser. The band were having a good time at his expense as he didn't realize it. Once they told him he still didn't care. lol!
    I can't speak for anywhere else other than CA and England but here in CA no one made a fuss about the lyrics or subject matter. In England they didn't either- just the fact they used a brand name in their song so made them change it.
    Check out more Kinks if you liked this one. They were far ahead of their time for the 60s and early 70s. Pick any one of about a dozen or so of their songs and you won't go wrong. Great band and love your reaction! We need some ELO too. :)

    I wasn't aware of this group until the initial reaction to The Kinks song "Waterloo Sunset" you did about a year ago. And that's how it is for me with this song. I know this song very well, but never knew the group. A fantastic melody and a certainly recognizable chorus. All I know is that the original lyric "it tastes just like Coca-Cola" had to be changed to "it tastes just like Cherry-Cola" due to commercial references or BBC wouldn't play it. Great reaction HAP and good choice Chris🥰🙋🏻‍♀

    I was very fond of the Kinks back in my youth and great you pick this pearl. I'm also fond of new artists pic up the "old" songs. One example is The MonaLisa Twins who has made a splendid version of Lola - Lola - MonaLisa Twins (The Kinks Cover) - they have made a lot of covers while they played in The Cavern Club for 100 Saturdays - try looking for The MonaLisa Twins in the Cavern.

    No lip syncing at the beginning where Ray actually sings but there is later. There's no middle finger regarding miming either. TOTP had done their research and viewers had said they preferred listening to the actual record rather than a live performance.

    • @m06een00
      @m06een00 Год назад

      Nope. It was all to do with the Musicians Union, and how much live performance vs. needle time time the BBC were allowed to use. That's why most performers on TOTP mimed to their records

    That is 100% lipsync. The real first live verse says Coca-Cola, it's the released recording that had " Cherry-cola " because the BBC had a policy of no product placement and it meant no UK air play.

  • @christineirving4491pluviophile

    The Kinks weren't alone in not bothering to plug into amps etc. We all knew that the bands were lip syncing and the bands played up to it - some like Wizzard and Mud didn't even make any attempt at miming and just had fun.

    Amazing to think that sex between me n was legalised in the UK in 1967. Only 3yrs previous to tjs song. When the law was revised it only allowed cosenting adults 21yrs old and over. Now think about this guy only leaving home a week ago. This was definately a more risky tune than most. This song did have issues but not gender ones. In this performance the lyrics was changed from coco cola to cherry cola because they did have permission to use the brand name.

    TV, much less a color set, wasn't a luxury in the 70s, at least not in the US. I was 10 when this came out.
    Yes, this was on the back end of the hippie 'free love' timeline as well as the Beatles, hence the long hair. The thing is that at that time, on both sides of the pond, homosexuality wasn't about, hence "walked like a woman but talked like a man" "boys will be girls and girls will be boys, its a mixed up, shook up world except for lola."
    What lola was biologically, "im not the most masculine guy, but i know what am, im a man and so is lola."

  • @vincentvancraig
    @vincentvancraig Год назад +1

    There were live shows back then...some shows just didnt trust the performers to take the risk...also, shows like top of the pops & its U.S. equivalent wanted the perfect, pristine radio/album versions...so, they made ppl lip synch

      @vincentvancraig Год назад

      & this is def live...changed from “coca-cola” to “cherry cola” to avoid a lawsuit for starters, but, yeah, this is totally diff from the album version...not the song, just the sonic soecifics/technicalities of the song
