  • (I’m talking that way so my mounted phone’s speech to text can understand me. I need to get better at editing myself out of the videos…)
The day begins near Leoti, KS where a storm fires along the dryline. This storm was struggling to organize and new cells were firing near an old outflow boundary by Winona, KS. I decided to blast north and go for the boundary. By the time I reached Winona, the westernmost cell had dropped several tornadoes and was beginning to dissipate. Two new cells fired over Colby and Gem. Both of these dropped brief tornadoes before the Gem cell took over and would go on to steal the show.
I continued to position east of the storm playing leap frog with it. This was a classic supercell with incredible structure. The storm cycled numerous times until it finally made a legitimate attempt with a sideways funnel almost reaching the ground near Rexford. After repositioning a few miles east of Selden, I got there just in time to watch the main event.
As the storm approached Selden, I stood at an intersection of two back roads and watched stovepipes, cones, and multiple vortices dance around the country side. Unfortunately, the town of Selden was hit directly but thankfully no major injuries or fatalities occurred. The storm continued the multi-vortex stage as it was getting a little close to my position.
I packed up the gear and sat in the car watching it until it was about half a mile away. My only route to a paved option was to continue 6 miles east on a terrible, mud road. Even in a Subaru Forester with all-terrain tires, I could barely maintain control at 15-20mph with the tornado continuing to spin up little vortices directly behind me. Eventually I reached the paved highway and dropped south to watch the storm move away. New storms were developing just ahead of the main one, so I dropped south for another potential storm but this was quickly dying.
All in all, I saw about 6-7 tornadoes depending on how you interpret the NWS survey. This was by far the most challenging, intense, but also rewarding chase in my young career thus far. Earth, TX on 5/16/21 still takes the cake for the overall favorite chase but Selden, KS will sit at a very close 2nd place.

Sony FDR AX100. Keep in mind there is some post-processing happening which includes color grading and stabilization
