He'd say "right tool for the job damnit son". Because those first years I was using his tools mostly, lol. Just reminded me of some good times of DIY with the "Old man", I sure miss him. I learned the word 'mortise'. This gives me a lot of confidence for replacing a door - thanks, Jeff. One recommendation I learned from a police department is to replace the screws that go in the strike plate (the plates that go into the mortise) is to use 3- or 4-inch screws (not the 1-inch screws they give in the lock kit) so that it goes to the studs. The longer screws make it harder to kick the door in if the strike plates bite into some more wood (or, as you've said in other videos, just in case you have a family of door slammers that also like to push up hard against the doors when they're carrying a load of groceries)... hee hee.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY

    • @jasonbengel
      @jasonbengel 5 лет назад +1

      @@HomeRenoVisionDIY Yes, it is -- I think it's a reference to a basement video where you show three different methods to put in a pre-framed door ("Good, Best, and super-fast"). As you went through the pros/cons, for one of the methods, you said, "This will work great, unless you live in a family of door slammers."

    Jeff, do you ever run any longer screws into the studs on the latch plate of the deadbolt on the door frame? I'm under the impression that there'd be a little bit better security with those longer screws going through more wood. Also, your tip about removing one of the handles is going to save me some grief when I'm installing 12 lever hardware sets in my current renovation this week; that was worth the price of admission alone! BTW, hope you guys take care of that joker who was using your lovely mug while trying to peddle some painting tools on Facebook; I sent y'all an email and Michelle Martin sent me a reply.

I did my absolute best caulking that thing, and water still somehow got inside and ruined it :(twice): Customer service was not too nice about it, and blamed my poor caulk job. A pro-installation might make for an excellent video - does the farmhouse need motion detection?

    • @davidozog7549
      @davidozog7549 5 лет назад

      That's the million dollar question. I would hope it didn't get into the box, and I can't imagine a reasonable scenario where that could have happened (except a bad caulk job). The Defiant guy said the water had to come from behind my caulk line because it's literally impossible to come through the fixture side even when submerged in water. I haven't actually opened it up yet to diagnose though. If you're dying to know, maybe I can prioritize this ;)

    What about the Wifi enables keyless lock that uses the smartphone to open. Are they reliable?

      Not sure if reliability is the biggest concern. Like with all things mechanical it is always best to have a key on you. For me I like the option to give out a code for other folks to have access without having keys floating around the city. The codes can be changed at any time.

      Makes sense to have more control with a key and numbers.

    I would highly suggest using lithium or rechargeable batteries in something like this. The last thing you want is to have your expensive lock stop working because one of the alkaline batteries decided to leak out.

    You need a new or sharper hole saw for the dead bolt hole I think.

      That is a good thing since most men don't read instructions I thought I would do it for them. Cheers!

    Note to self: buy the jig next time it’s easier than using the paper template.

      Hi Travis, nope we are just trying out the new ridgid brushless for a few weeks to see if they would be a good option for homeowners. Cheers! Jury is still out.
