In this video, Prof. John Ahr teaches you how to remove the copper plating that appears on silver jewelry that has been exposed to contaminated pickle.
Don't feel bad. You're here because your silver looks like copper. It's OK. It could happen to anyone.
The first thing that you need to do is empty your pickle pot (safely), rinse it and put in new pickling solution. There's a how to set up your pickle pot video on this channel if you need help with this task.
After you've made fresh pickling solution you're ready to fix your plated jewelry pieces. All you need to do is to "lightly anneal" them. You don't need to heat the metal until it gives off a glow. You just need to heat the surface until it looks dull. Then, put the item in your fresh pickle. You might have to repeat this process a few times. But, it's guaranteed to work.

I was doing this half a dozen times, and every time it went more coppery.
Then I was weighting the piece in my hand and and thinking, why is it so light and does not feel as cold to hand.🤦‍♂

It sounds like your results were bad because you didn’t use clean pickle. Make a fresh batch of sodium bisulfate pickle solution and try again. 😀

Do you have a video for these earrings?

Hi Bruce, Here's a link to a video on how to make this type of earring:
      www.onlinejewelryacademy.com/copper-leaf-earring-video.html
The shape of the earrings in the video is a little different. But, I'm sure that you can create a similar shape to the ones in the photo of the "Correcting Silver Jewelry Pickling Mistakes". Be sure to check out the OJA's website at: www.onlinejewelryacademy.com. There you'll find all of our 350+ free videos organized by topic. 😀

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy Great, thanks. I think I've watched this, I'm experimenting with leaves from our garden and a newly acquired rolling mill and wanted to make sure I haven't missed anything.I'm kind of combining both techniques. Love your channel, I'm a subscriber and fan.

Will this same process work if you plated your copper pieces? I didn't realize a piece got tossed in with an earring back on it and I think that all of the copper pieces are now plated. TIA

Hi Kim, I'm confused. You want to remove copper plating from copper pieces? Why bother? But, if you must, this process will work. Still, how could you tell? See, I'm confused. Good luck!
Thanks for your support! : )

As it turned out, I was confused. I had pickled multiple pieces and after I took the wire brush too it, it was SUPER shiny. So I figured I put some kind of "plated" finish on it. It is fine. I had just done a wonderful job with the brush. Sometimes I feel like a dope. Thanks for responding so quickly.

I bought a pair of gold filled earrings at a thrift store and they had a bit of red discolouration on the back so I tried a few methods and although they looked so so much better I went a step too far and decided to try a method I saw in another video (not one of your's) which I guess you refer to as "pickling". Two parts Distilled Vinegar and 1 Part 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to remove the copper. It worked as she described but in my error, I didn't want until the end when it came to polishing the piece that now looked like a deep rose gold. The same thing happened to my earrings. She used a pre-moistened polishing pad (Grande Rio Pro) and a tumbler. I have neither on hand and don't want to invest in a tumbler just for this one experiment. Is there some kind of polish I can purchase that will restore my earrings back to yellow gold without a tumbler??

Obviously I cannot see the condition of your jewelry to determine what would work best on it. But my best guess would probably be to use a rouge cloth on it. A “polish” from the grocery store probably won’t work. 😀
