Translation: he likes to use the pentatonic and diatonic scales which gives him the rock sound hes referring too. All the while, he enjoys mixing the minor and major third for tonal modulation and add a different feel (like most blues players do). He also like to throw in the seventh (the blue note) and play off the blues scale. When the sixth is involved in the chord progression he likes to uses the harmonic minor scale to add a melancholic feel to the whole thing. You're welcome
It doesn't really matter nor do I really care that he's not technically brilliant. Fucker is living "Phat" and has lived the rock star dream and has probably paggered more fanny than all of us put together. The guy is a legend and I dont use that term lightly or very often. Nob head above talking about 5th's and saying "You're welcome " What a complete fuckin Twat..... Tonal modulation. ......?? WTFF!
I love how he calls the pentatonic scale "the rock scale." That is the most accurate way I've heard it explained. And his way of playing with feeling/emotion but can't do it as well when he trys to be more technical is exactly how I am. His concept on taking the pentatonic scales and just adding a few different notes to get the different feelings/sounds is the same way I have always approached my lead playing. The only real difference is Slash is WAY better at it than I could ever hope to be.
Personally I've always liked Slash because there is emotion to his playing...like the blues men of old...I do like tech guitar players but all my guitar heroes are usually self taught and play with soul...like bb King
Love that comment man. But as a fan and just being music lover, the one that sticks in my brain when comes to rock related music are those nice songs with guitar solos. Lots of nice songs out there, but they just can't survive that long simply because they lack that one major ingredient of a nice guitar solo. Just my personal opinion.
I promise you can learn what he's talking about if you read up on the major scale first, then learn the three different minor scales. Then look at your guitar and try to see where those notes land on your frets. Playing it with creativity and speed however, is another beast which will only come with practice and patience.
Nice!! This is gold! I can relate to what he says about the clinical scales and techniques...but...playing with no feeling...... Just have a basic backbone to come from then feel and improvise the rest!
The worst teacher in the world but Slash is the best motivation for all those who imagine they need to learn 1000 scales for becoming a guitar legend...
The greatest lead guitar work you have ever heard is mainly in the pentatonic scales etc. the art is phrasing within those parameters. It’s what makes you, “you”…
I'm convinced this particular Gibson he's using is an 88' Tennessee one. The finish on that guitar is so remarkably similar to mine. I wish he'd have turned the headstock to the camera so we could confirm.
I could listen to Slash all day, everyday, ans still not get bored. And I'm only talking about listening to his interview and tips. Ofcourse, his songs Incan listen to for decades 🤘
My favourite drinking party would include this rock god, Lemmy, DLR, NIKKI SIX and maybe Bruce Dickinson. Probably ask Duff and a few others like Bret Michaels to poke fun at!
I agree with the consensus that to get the most out of this do the following: Learn the music basics from a teacher for beginners. Once you got that down return to this video to guide your music.
My love of music began at 4 years .got a Gibson guitar that I got from good Will.i used to at up late to watch an old tv show that had a band called a.c/dc got to a bit of trouble over that but I would try to sneak in to the living room any way just to watch Angus and his brother play guitar along with others like meat loaf Jeff beck Steve hoe, bb king, buddy guy, Jimmy Hendrix, muddy waters a lot more influences me to play as I do when I have the equipment needed to play.still love playing when I can.
Great example of someone not caring much about or being super knowledgeable on the deepest ins and outs of music theory, but still being able to play at master level.. You can tell he's playing all sorts of spicy stuff including very tasteful pentatonic and blues licks, Dorian, mixolydian, etc, etc.. He doesn't get hung up on the names of it all but still plays it very tastefully.. I myself have spent aeons studying scales and modes and it's nice to be able to put names to the shapes you're seeing and the sounds you're hearing but the holy grail is just being able to PLAY it. I have seen people say Slash is overrated for using too much pentatonic same with Kirk Hammett, but yet their solos sound very pleasing to the ear because well, pentatonic are often the best harmonic choices to build your phrases around.. These guys don't have to be pros at theory, if they just sound good.
Those who can't do, teach...obviously Slash does... Its more of a case of: He's got so much going on up there, it is just best for him to play and you to work it out or ask questions. He's not a lecturer, he's a real practitioner.
Not that easy to follow buts basically he uses mainly pentatonic scales and throws in the sharps and flat notes next to the scales that work and uses the extended pentatonic to join scales and uses the sharps and flat notes in the same way to join scales
This is what separates players who know all the scales and those who don't. The ones who do, are predictable and never have anything that memorable. The ones who don't have the best ears and can hear exactly what they want to play without having it dictated by music theory.
Diego Ambrosio what makes you think he didn’t know it? He still respected Slash as a musician even when they were feuding, in fact he admitted in an interview on the phone that Slash is irreplaceable
People played music for thousands of years before there was ever a thing called the "major scale" . Sheet music, as we know it today, hasn't been around that long. It's the SOUND that's important, and nothing else.
he said he doesn't do much scales but as soon as he started playing guitar, all the major and minor scale is getting involved..very ironically, to play music you don't think about scale but if you don't know the scales you basically can't play music...how do we know that if it is rock sound that im playing or not.. rock sound was also made from legendary guitarists who established the scales and chords long time ago..and we need to learn those to play music.. BTW slash is one of the great guitarists.. he just wants to show off his playing lol
....and then I wiggle my fingers and feel it out. Tend to come in before the bar live and do a handstand after throwing picks at the audience. Most successful guitarist ever. Yeah, like that.
what he is saying is that all he plays are the pentatonic shapes with chromaticism. the rest of the video he is just trying to hide how simple his approach really is. He's no dumby. Not a knock on him at all just the truth. He shows you (study his tabs after learning these positions; penta and blues scales are the two he is refering to) and you'll see that he uses those scales his whole career masterfully. Look at the November rain solo for example. 1st position. Look at civil war main riff open position penta. look at don't cry solo, again mainly all pentatnoic. even with velvet spectacle solo etc over and over. how he gets so much music out of these scales is incredible and shows how truly inexhaustible music really is. Imagine if he delved into modes at some point...like prince once said regarding modes, the possibilities are endless. Think about it - 12 keys and 7 modes...that's alot of potential music. Not to mention the man made melodic and harmonic minor keys. What slash does right imo is that he actually MASTERED something instead of getting lost in the inexhaustible. Hence the intro slide K.I.S.S (keep it simple stupid)
Why don't you get experimental? Try new things, things you've never done before. Find your "own thing". This doesn't really require any knowledge about scales in therms of lesson theory. And after finding out what YOU want to play you can still learn what it's called in theory ^^
How slash explains how to play guitar: "Just learn some rock scales and if the moon aligns with the sun than play some flat 7th into that scale so you can get that minor 4th to vibrate long enough for you to have time to go after that minor # 7." Amazing guitar player but an awful teacher 😂
this demonstrates that music has to be felt rather than learned. Of course knowing the theory is important, but the touch of feeling to it makes the difference.
he doesn't seem to know a lot about theory, that's why he has a hard time trying to convey his process while making music, but you know what his work is way more iconic than anything from malmsteen, vai and satriani. ps: I like a one or two solos from steve vai and despise pretty much everything that malmsteen did, you wanna see scales, listen to malmsteen there's nothing there but scales and real composers' melodies.
You just need to learn basics, and that is bunch of chords, some scales, and to know notes on the guitar, to be able to realize how the chords are created from those notes. To know where you are, and you will actually know how that sounds. You wont touch "bad" notes, cause you actually now that those notes does not belong there, or it sounds bad.
ya dude..he does go for the sound.but I never knew he knows this stuff. though he is one of the best guitarists I have ever seen. His style is very natural.
weird comment, since he is specifically saying that he doesnt know theory as well as other people and this is just stuff that he figured out by feel as he went along...
And this is why you don't take lessons from slash. Because only slash knows what slash is talking about..learn your scales boys and girls and if you want to play like me, forget the scales and add these modes in where they don't belong. He's the only guy that can pull that off
Dean botts I'm thinking lukather, i don't think he is talking about vai, it would make much more sense if he's talking about steve lukather, they've even recorded together so...
well that was about as clear as mud. I mean I realize that he just plays from the "feel" of the song...but in that case...why ask about theoretical parts of his playing when its evident that he simply doesn't use much theory (from what hes making out) but rather goes on the "feel." Seems like a waste of an interview to be honest
You're welcome
actually the blue note is the flat 5th
OLIAKOS you are correct.
It doesn't really matter nor do I really care that he's not technically brilliant. Fucker is living "Phat" and has lived the rock star dream and has probably paggered more fanny than all of us put together. The guy is a legend and I dont use that term lightly or very often.
Nob head above talking about 5th's and saying "You're welcome "
What a complete fuckin Twat.....
Tonal modulation. ......?? WTFF!
How many kinds of scales are there? I'm a beginner and have just learned the pentatonic scales
Someone get me a translation for this
how to play like slash: hire slash
Wow the 2 account just work together to trick us
after watching this for 8 years from time to time now i understand little more
A student will learn a lot from Slash, but only if he is already really, really good.
😂
Actually I learnt so well from him... I mean I burst my liver.
Wow this lesson was amazing. So many different theory concepts in one short clip! Slash is a champ
"something like that, u get it" I'm like no!
2:11 you know what i mean, right?🤣
Personally I've always liked Slash because there is emotion to his playing...like the blues men of old...I do like tech guitar players but all my guitar heroes are usually self taught and play with soul...like bb King
Slash longs for a world where every song is one big guitar solo.
don't we all?
Bayonse
LoL!! Yes!
Great Comment btw.
Guitar solos are dead, a great loss RIP guitar solos
This couldn't have been more confusing.
it's honestly pretty easy lol made perfect sense. You gotta learn some music theory!
I promise you can learn what he's talking about if you read up on the major scale first, then learn the three different minor scales. Then look at your guitar and try to see where those notes land on your frets. Playing it with creativity and speed however, is another beast which will only come with practice and patience.
Adam Kidwell I know this stuff already but he is not the at explaining.
TAR CRYSTALLINE he's not sure about what he's saying here
It makes sense if you have a very basic understanding of music theory.
He talks gibberish bro. Definitely, not technical but has good feel for music .
Nice!! This is gold! I can relate to what he says about the clinical scales and techniques...but...playing with no feeling...... Just have a basic backbone to come from then feel and improvise the rest!
Exactly
The worst teacher in the world but Slash is the best motivation for all those who imagine they need to learn 1000 scales for becoming a guitar legend...
vodoo57 alessio of
Basically he says: Use the minor and major blues scale depending on the chords and add a 7th and/or minor and major 6th :-)

Okay...
hahahaha wtf
kkkkk
+Robert Ravic ikr i saw then saw this lol
+Robert Ravic cause slash is a beast
the cat in the hat
The greatest lead guitar work you have ever heard is mainly in the pentatonic scales etc. the art is phrasing within those parameters. It’s what makes you, “you”…
is it me or in the last second he started playing stairway to heaven?
ahah yes it's the beginning of the stairway's solo
The last note of the opening "Stairway" lick is F, the minor 6th (in regards to A) that he's talking about. It's just an example.
he doesnt even know what he is talking about, thats why he is the best iconic rock guitarist.
There's an old saying "Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach". Obviously Slash is in the "can" camp.
Wow Category : Pets and Animals
The Pug Master Because it sounds like a cat's pawing at the strings. Slash is a rare shit. His skill at the bottom.
Well, he's no Vai or Petrucci, but he knows as much theory as he needs. That's the main thing.
He seems to know a little more music theory then you would think, I'm sure if this interview was an hour long you could really pick his brain
My favourite drinking party would include this rock god, Lemmy, DLR, NIKKI SIX and maybe Bruce Dickinson. Probably ask Duff and a few others like Bret Michaels to poke fun at!
RIP dude...lol
Can't wait for he's course in quantum physics !

The best players play by ear, not what a music theory teacher told them to play.
Those who can't do, teach...obviously Slash does...
Its more of a case of: He's got so much going on up there, it is just best for him to play and you to work it out or ask questions. He's not a lecturer, he's a real practitioner.

lol, first part of the Stairway solo at the end there!
He explain everything perfectly well simple stuff which is good when its rock and as long as you play it with feel thats all that matters.
he threw in stairway to heaven solo at the end lol
The F note at the end of the Stairway lick is the minor 6th he's talking about.
Is he talking about Steve Stevens at the beginning?
Slash's sound matches Axl's singing like no one else''s... too bad that singer doesn't know it anymore.
He does now!!!
Diego Ambrosio what makes you think he didn’t know it? He still respected Slash as a musician even when they were feuding, in fact he admitted in an interview on the phone that Slash is irreplaceable

slash is like the rock n roll cat in the hat
He referenced Zeppelin 5 times in 3 minutes.
Page is the template for all hard rock
everything he plays sounds so SLASHY! AIUEHAEUHAEIU
I MEAN IT!
Where could I find the whole interview? :))
i believe slash uses much of his ear then incorporate it to scales, technique
bro , He is a God of Guitar !
he know everything !
that last lick is of jimmy page in my view.
I know a lot of scales but can’t play with Slash feel and it drives me crazy.
GREAT now I can play like Slash
Was this recorded with a hot dog bun??
is he playing in the minor and the major pentatonic? God I love his sound
2:54 I need that scale
he said he doesn't do much scales but as soon as he started playing guitar, all the major and minor scale is getting involved..very ironically, to play music you don't think about scale but if you don't know the scales you basically can't play music...how do we know that if it is rock sound that im playing or not.. rock sound was also made from legendary guitarists who established the scales and chords long time ago..and we need to learn those to play music.. oh boy! Where did you start smoking Gitanes??? ^^
2:50 Is tehere any chance to have a tab? 😅
....and then I wiggle my fingers and feel it out. Tend to come in before the bar live and do a handstand after throwing picks at the audience. Most successful guitarist ever. Yeah, like that.
0:26 - Steve as in Steve Vai himself?
Steven adler
what he is saying is that all he plays are the pentatonic shapes with chromaticism. the rest of the video he is just trying to hide how simple his approach really is. He's no dumby. I'm currently studying my scales chord progressions and such

hey there! actually before I delve in to study my theory I play randomly making sure to have fun. yes my brotha we on the same page. cheers!!
Diego Visoso Then have fun! Cheers, too :)
lol i love how he is like its this or something like that, he doesn't know what he is saying he is trying tho lol
How slash explains how to play guitar:
"Just learn some rock scales and if the moon aligns with the sun than play some flat 7th into that scale so you can get that minor 4th to vibrate long
enough for you to have time to go after that minor # 7."
Amazing guitar player but an awful teacher 😂
I promise you will definitely understand the whole video once you learn music theory
I play guitar. Understood him perfectly. Don't know what people are going on about.
the last lick was like from the solo of Stairway to Heaven :D
this demonstrates that music has to be felt rather than learned. Of course knowing the theory is important, but the touch of feeling to it makes the difference.
What scale is it??
he doesn't seem to know a lot about theory, that's why he has a hard time trying to convey his process while making music, but you know what his work is way more iconic than anything from malmsteen, vai and satriani. ps: I like a one or two solos from steve vai and despise pretty much everything that malmsteen did, you wanna see scales, listen to malmsteen there's nothing there but scales and real composers' melodies.
When he talked about mentor Steve, is Steve Vai?
steve lukather
OK Lukather is great too.
Good question though :)
Steve Austin
John3121000
Or Steve Morse.
not useful at all, but not because of Slash, but for the genius who made this video....
What scale is he using at the very end???
Ross H of course the last scale..Locrian
You just need to learn basics, and that is bunch of chords, some scales, and to know notes on the guitar, to be able to realize how the chords are created from those notes. Is it all the same scale what he played
Just enjoy the fucking Music, this guy is great!
Imagine hes your guitar teacher
Best guitar player ever!
Matter of opinion
check out gary moore.
Stairway to Heaven solo in 3:09...Slash is the better...
:p..no
The better ? Wtf
Best* .-.
calm down it's just a fucked song trying to take you soul
lol, he's like, just start with some scale and then just start playing what you feel...what, you can't do that?
He knows more theory than I though
ya dude..he does go for the sound.but I never knew he knows this stuff. though he is one of the best guitarists I have ever seen. His style is very natural.
You rock slash! I wonna meet you soooooo bad!
3:10 Slash's playin stairway to heaven.
I totally got it..Hand me a guitar now!
weird comment, since he is specifically saying that he doesnt know theory as well as other people and this is just stuff that he figured out by feel as he went along...

I,love slash ♥_♥
Who is Steve?
Im implying he isnt necessarily playing either of them..
He doesn't lol!!! He knows the same handful of traditional rock licks and mixes it up.
Is the very last lick from stairway to heaven?
3rd i mean 7th, you know what i mean right?
He's the Guitar God but not the God at teaching guitar
Which Steve is he talking about?
steve vai I think
Steve Adler
It's Steve Lukather.
steve buscemi
Ah, the sound of silence. 😐
What steve is he talking about?
Dean botts I'm thinking lukather, i don't think he is talking about vai, it would make much more sense if he's talking about steve lukather, they've even recorded together so...
What Steve is he talking about??
Adam Bayer steve vai
Those who can't teach, play.
what cigarettes are they next to him?
Cheeky bit of stairway there at the end
I love slash
Which LP is he playing?
haha i like the stairway to heaven in the very end :P
yup I caught that
well that was about as clear as mud. I mean I realize that he just plays from the "feel" of the song...but in that case...why ask about theoretical parts of his playing when its evident that he simply doesn't use much theory (from what hes making out) but rather goes on the "feel." there is more scales than the minor and major pentatonic..
