A great idea! Keeping an indoor cat entertained is important to the mental health of the animal. I do suggest you add a controllable "gate" to the "goodie chute" so that you can set the interval between snacks. While I like the remote-controlled, video-enhanced toy, I think an autonomous version would be a commercially viable product. Good video, Angus. Thank you for sharing.
I would 100% buy this. I have house cats, so keeping them stimulated and entertained is paramount. The vast majority of toys on the market are either dangerous, or designed by someone who has only seen a picture of a cat and hasnt a clue about what attracts them.
If it could dispense Dreamies, even better.

Try a motorized laser pointer according to my kitties it was the best 20 bucks I ever spent!
Tully and Prince are adorable. I have a soft spot for black cats from my long-time best buddy Sabbath.
If this was a project that could be bought, maybe had a non-laser cutting option, but full instructions, I'd be buying it.

Plans? Kit? I would totally throw money at you for either to build this. I have no desire to get into combat robotics but this would be a gateway drug to learning more about such things. Maybe not the FPV bit but an unarmed robot kit/plans? Take my money!
You should put this up a website where people could pay like €5-€10 to control the mouse for a few mins! 😅
sad thing is that it might be used to bother the cats or spy or dox the creator, so not awesome idea

Word of caution, don’t let cats play with strings unattended. They will happily eat the string, which can get tangled in their intestines and get stuck there, requiring surgery to get out (or death in worst case scenario). Most of the time it passes through their stomach fine, but if it gets tangled (as in, the sting is long enough to make it through a couple of U turns in their intestines and the friction is increased too much for it to pass through) they will become very ill and need medical attention.
So keep an eye on them so they don’y eat too much sting (preferably none at all).

You should cover the ROV in faux grey fur and put some fuzz on the end of the tail. I bet they'd really go nuts for it then!

I could see someone logging in remotely to have a bit of fun with their cat or dog during lunch or something. You could have it so that if they pull the tail a treat dispenses. Maybe attach the string to the door and a spring?
I was given a remote control toy when we got Ember from the shelter. It is interesting that you evolved the wheels to the same thing that has. The toy we have is remote control or you can turn it on auto and it will randomly move around and flaps the tail forward and back like a whip. You can change the tail, I currently have a fuzzy one on over the feathers. She is actually more into the spare mast that it came with right now. :)
It lights up and stuff too. She isn't as interested in it though now that she is older. She is more keen on getting at printer filament, climbing on cabinets, or knocking things off shelves, shredding paper, and so on. lol
Great stuff! Kittens will change your life! I used a similar fog aio can to follow my cat around with little arc car years ago. Too fun!

Please add tiny side-mirrors - it would be much better if you (the pilot) could get a sense of the vicious predator on your tail (literally)

Nice one Angus! It would be neat to get an NVIDIA jetson or similar computer vision on it and train a cat detection model to get your mouse to run away from the cats.
one idea I always wanted to do for my cats (at least until they became lazy bums) was to setup a rope and pully system around the house that could pull a toy at good speed quietly around the house. This way you could move a much lighter toy much faster and put a couple of corner pullies in and you can entice them to chase much easier. The problem I had with things like RC mice or wind up mice is that they are too loud and slow to get any real hunting interest

Autonomouse !! Have it do random movements or auto drive - like if it jiggles and the cat baps it, it moves 2 feet if gets bapped again it moves again.. etc.

For anyone (like people in Dutch...) that don't know what this is: a Bill Of Material when I remember right.... The Dutch meaning would not be nice for the cats!
What if you put IR emitters on the cats and an IR receiver on the "mouse"? It could be programmed to run away from them, though you'd need some sort of circling algorithm to get it off of walls.

Now make an AI to control the mouse that is optimized to keep the cats occupied! :D

This would be a great idea for a booth. Your bot needs buttons on the outside. When pressed you loose a life. Reach the goal without loosing all your life's.
