I heard your grandad and the other veteran say they messed up the town and destroyed the buildings and such. Could you tell him for me that cities, building and such can all be rebuild, replaced and so on but freedom is so much more important and that we appreciate the effort and sacrifice he and his comrades gave so we could be free.

Knew a veteran from Arnhem from 1st Para , he could never go back because it distressed him so much, he loved the Dutch and felt he betrayed them. Sad really, but if he knew just how wonderful the Dutch people were with these commemorations, I am sure he would have loved the forgiveness.

My Grandfather was a part of Recce squadron, D troop, 12 section.
They were in the lead of the advance up the Utrechtseweg on the 18th.
He was injured and eventually captured at the school on Paasberg and was destroyed.
I sincerely hope I get to visit soon, it's been on my mind for a long time.

As an ex British soldier and veteran of some more recent conflicts, with a passion for WW2 re enactment, I will be attending Arnhem in my WW2 Airborne Uniform along side many others this year for the 80th. As an ex medic and infantryman, I attend as an WW2 Airborne Medic. On my first visit to Arnhem back in 1996, myself and my cohorts, gave a lift in our Willis Jeep, to a veteran, who had missed the organised bus back to the camp, after the demonstration jumps of the British and American parachute teams. My friends and I, after dispatching the misplaced veteran, had the privilege of meeting a large number of veterans at the Dutch military camp, he and his mates were staying. Let's just say the wine and beer flowed and a good time was had by all. Sadly I believe, I will never meet their kind again. Thanks to their generations bravery and sacrifice, nations in Europe had their freedom given back to them. I would like to thank the creators of this documentary and the Dutch people, for their continuous support of the veterans and keeping the memory alive of those who fought and died in this major battle.
