I asked Perplexity AI why Northern Rock went bust, and it agrees with my vague memory of it, e.g. - Northern Rock relied heavily on short-term wholesale funding from the money markets, with about 75% of its funds coming from this source13. This made the bank extremely vulnerable to disruptions in the credit markets. - While there were enough ordinary people with deposits to form a queue that got on telly, I don't think that's where the problem started. Also Northern Rock relied on securitising their loans and selling them to banks, who became skeptical about the value of securities like that in the financial crisis.
