The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

WoW! Edith Piaf au Ed Sullivan show! C’est extraordinaire!

  • @TomElvisSmith

This song was a Top 10 hit for a group called "The Cheers" in 1955, and I always thought it was bizarre that Edith recorded it, and had a big hit with the single. It's to her credit that she could take a rather forgettable novelty song and give it her magic! On this episode she also sang "Poor People of Paris".

@@isakhan87 In 1960 she sang in Versailles, the French TOWN, not the american cabaret. I can tell you with dates exactly what happened:
20 june 1959: she arrived to Paris from the USA
In the summer she did a tour around France. In november she made a second tour that was called the "suicide tour" and on 13 december she collapsed on stage in Dreux. Until 27 January 1960 she was in hospital. She did not sing until 17 december 1960. On 28 December she sang in the french town Versailles at the Cinema Le Cyrano. The photos you are talking about was taken during that event. Not in New York. That is why her big comback on 29 december was an international success and the peak of her career. In 1961, due to her health a tour to Germany and to Russia was cancelled. She really wanted to go back to New York, and in 1963 she was supposed to go back with her husband, Théo Sarapo. But, she died in the same year. So, 1959 was the last time she was in the USA. Believe me, I am not "Google"...

i heard this song a few years back on a low power fm station in portland, kiss fm iirc. it's been a personal favorite of mine since. when i looked it up, wikipedia referred to it as a "novelty" song (which was an umbrella term at the time). i want to start playing it with my band, so i check youtube and find edith piaf covering it. who knew?! apparently a bunch of folks in france! what an interesting arrangement too, the first verse sounded like it was just her voice and drums. the instrumentation here has more pieces than the cheers' recording so the dissonant chords are voiced super robust. i'm not sure what other music was on tv that night, but i doubt there was anything that sounded like this. so cool.

OK. Now I know 'of' Edith Piaf, as a legendary French Chanteuse, but I've never heard her sing. But another commenter said this song was a Top Ten American hit song, so I looked on Wikipedia for it's story and wow, what the H is THIS? Then went and heard, here, the original by The Cheers. Absolutely Bonkers. Check it out...

    Lyrics:

The French love American music, so long as it's in French. Joe Dassin went over to France and became a huge celebrity just by singing American hits in French.
But they aren't that fond of Jerry Lewis.

Found the Cheers version on the "Shut down" (why the Beach Boys released "Shut down vol 2") album released in the early 60's. Didn't know the song was that old and that Edith Piaf recorded it as well!!! What a surprise!!! Great though, wonderful singer!
