Billy Sims was one the greatest running back talents of all-time, period. Should’ve been a two time Heisman winner, and had all the makings of a HOF NFL running back if it wasn’t for injuries.
My dad took me to the regular season game- my first ever Husker game. I love watching these two teams run the option. Billy Sims was sensational, Rick Berns ran so hard, but there has never been a greater name in college football than I.M. Hipp!!!
Richard Berns was a powerful runner and he wasn't slow either. He was pretty fast. Hipp however was the first Husker Running back to run under 4.4. Isiaha really struggled with injuries in 78. And never got over the turf toe, although he started out with a big game in 1979 rushing for 168 yards and 3 touchdowns. I wish someone had highlights of the game in 1977 where Lee Corso's Indiana team came to Lincoln. Corso said if "We can limit Berns to under a hundred yards we've got a good chance. Rick got knocked out of the game with bruised ribs in the first quarter. Injury aside , Corso thought he was getting a break. To paraphrase, "We practiced all week to stop Berns, we never practiced to stop this other kid! That other kid being I.M. Hipp who came off the bench and ran for 254 yards!
This game was SWEET REVENGE for the Sooners who had that ONE loss against Nebraska in Lincoln earlier that year! Yet another National Championship eluded Oklahoma that year! It was so unusual that they met twice in a year! This was a rivalry that mirrored Michigan and Ohio State! One of the best rivalries EVER!
Aww I remember this game! Nebraska finally beats Oklahoma in the regular season and due to their loss to Missouri the next week , the Orange bowl rematched them
Bowls in those days would send out invites before the reg season was over. Most extreme example I remember was in 1990 was when top ranked Virginia was invited to the sugar bowl with 3 games to play. By kickoff Virginia was unranked.
The halftime show was a salute to the entertainment phenomenon, disco, which would literally crash and burn that summer at Chicago's Comiskey Park. One of the sponsors on NBC was National Airlines, Florida's hometown airline seen by Europeans as a superb international airline, but sold by year's end to another superb international airline with Miami roots, Pan Am. NBC was plugging itself as home of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, but Jimmy Carter and the Red Army would throw a wrench in those plans.
After finally beating the Sooners in Lincoln, Nebraska running back Rick Berns bragged that he could now speed through Oklahoma and not get a ticket. Days later Oklahoma was chosen as their opponent in the Orange bowl and the Cornhuskers were not happy.
I'll never forget the look on Dr Tom's face when he got the call informing him they were going to have to play OU again, lol. The win in Lincoln was his first against OU/Switzer. Dr Tom ended up 5-12 against Switzer, lol. Boomer Sooner!!
This game featured two future Miami Dolphin (Nebraska FB Andra Franklin / Oklahoma K Uwe von Schamman) players who would play many games on this field in the 80s
@@madbrowniac7871 - Missed Overstreet. Forgot he went to OU. Should’ve known that as I lived in Miami in the 80s and saw him play live several times with the Dolphins.
Need to show the phone call in which the Orange Bowl representative invited both OU and Nebraska for a rematch. Switzer accepted, Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and athletic director Bob Devaney were hesitant in accepting. Because they were scared of meeting OU again.
If you can online order “History Of Oklahoma Football part 3” it covers Switzer’s entire coaching career. Including the orange bowl representative invite both OU & Nebraska for a rematch
Thomas Lott wore a scarf or bandana under his helmet every game. When I was playing football n my younger days n Oklahoma, we would wear a scarf or bandana like Thomas Lott. I b-lieve that were Deion Sanders got wearing a bandana from was Thomas Lott.
What the hell? Nebraska would get a big play and penalty. Another big gainer and a penalty. Getting frustrated watching this even if it was 44 years ago.
My father and all his family were from Lincoln Nebraska and my mother and all her family were from the Oklahoma City area I was born '79. Never once did my mother allow her boys to Don those ugly husker red jerseys. Boomer Sooner
Both of these teams were great running teams.... However, they were not as balance as the SEC teams today.... Today, throwing is as much as running...... They would probably go 60 to 70 percent in their wins....

Well, we had an Elvis Peacock and a Buster Rhymes, but I.M. Hipp is the best.

Great game, lot of hard hitting old school football, I love it

Clemson got hosed in retrospect
@@chrisuncleahmad666 Yep, you're right. This was the year Clemson ended up beating Ohio State in the Gator Bowl which had the Woody Hayes punch.
Yep, wouldn't you know it! We out our heart & soul into beating OU in the regular season, only to have to beat them twice, and nearly did it!
If Ohio State could have played Texas A&M or Washington instead in Gator Bowl Woody could have kept coaching 🤔 🤷 🙄 😒 😐 😤

Thank you for sharing these OU games from the past, enjoying it big time! Gave you a Sub and a Like!

It really seemed improbable Nebraska would beat Oklahoma twice. It was surprising to see the beat Sooners once

In my opinion Thomas was the greatest wishbone quarterback of all time.
@@cowpuncher5099 I agree 100% w/u brethren.
@@cowpuncher5099 Some say Jemelle Hollieway, JC Watts, or Jack Mildred deserve that Title. My vote is for Hollieway.
@@DocSportello1970 can’t argue with any of those men. Jack made me a fan of the bone and he gets the toughness and shredded jersey award!
Commentators:
Dick Enberg & Merlin Olsen
Merlin Olsen was an excellent analyst with a great voice, but eventually he was demoted because he wasn't "colorful" and "controversial" enough.
Remember all the color guys in the nfl would always say " I'd like to see Sr Miller!"
Can you get the LSU vs Southern Cal 1984 Game?
Jeez, last play of the half Frank Lockett was wide open streaking down the sideline and it's over- thrown and picked off.
How both teams get in the orange bowl
Why did they meet in the orange bowl usually is one or the other
How did they both end up in the Orange bowl?
SteelBuck 6 do you have chance that you have the 2007 penn st Notre dame game?
Yes I can do that one. Should be up probably in the next couple weeks.

NU would have kicked more field goals if the kicker hadn't used his left foot.
Man, missed two field goals or we could have beaten the Sooners again. Not to mention crazy penalties killing drives.
