As a long-time, like 50 years long, JW fan, I have to say that I love his studio work more than his live stuff. He is more contained, more in control of his tone, less prone to excessive notes and of course you have engineers to manage the mix. This is some of the tastiest stuff he ever did. Just really good. RIP JW.
I first heard Johnny Winter in 1969 as well. I was a senior in high school and I was in the process of discovering the blues. Johnny was transformative for me.
Saw this tour in 1988, Omar and the Howlers opened in London Ont. Johnny was LOUD, not near as good a concert as the 85 or 1986 held at Stages in Kitchener. Johnny "live" usually played at a pace that was 2 times what was recorded and he'd solo like a MOFO.
You're right about both guitar and voice. He was an underrated singer. I always preferred his natural smooth voice, as opposed to his growl. He sings beautifully here, as he does on "Stranger," my favorite of all his songs.
Don't think he knew how powerful and influential he was. He bled da blues. My man Johnny. I don't understand why we have to die, why did we loss Johnny, it really sucks. Any hoot, I can listen to him until I shuffle off this rock. Peace and love to all....
NEVER forget you Johnny!! You are like a father for me - and a friend- such a long time I admire all your art of playing and singing! Yes, you are a very great artist!
Johnny started tuning a whole step down in 1984 when he started playing the LAZER it had 10 on it and didn't like how they felt he was used to 9 to 42 with 24 3/4 Gibson. LAZER is 25 1/2 scale length he was not used to it so he end up using 10 -46 for the rest of his career and tune a whole down he love the sound of it also. Slide open E then open D later on. For slide have seen him Live use open A also.
Yeah Johnny went to one of the best I cried when he died what are the most underrated guitar players in the world he was great he will be missed love you Johnny
A fav. album! saw him numerous times and places through the 80's :) Saw him and his brother :) jam together off and on for 5 hrs :) with BB KING as a walk on :) Those shows were called "EXTRAS" or something to that effect? one headliner the house charged twice what a show cost then 25$ a person, and looked the other way if you snuck in your own bottle :) they took a rough vote that night if they could sell enough seats lol he came back on Saturday and with another band basically did it all over again :) saw so many great shows there, uptown theatre in KCMO before they remodeled it :) saw so many awesome people back then, did not know much about blues then but did know great rock & rollers:) thanks Keep rockin. peace. Rick
JOHNNY YOU WON'T BE MISSED WITH YOUR MUSIC PLAY , AN UNLESS YOU DIDN'T SEE HIM LIVE, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MISSED ! scobieakalinkwrayband laurel, md.
I just found an old mixed tape I'd made off the radio, hadn't played it for 20 years. I was fast forwarding thru it when I heard this song. The tape player played a bit fast, so the vocals sounded higher & I didn't recognize who it was, but the lead guitar was like "Wow.. WHO is this, Clapton on guitar??" So I Googled some of the lyrics, & up came this song! I'm familiar with Winter's 60's & 70's stuff, but I never listened to him during his period - a bit more "rock", but wicked soloing!
@ShredMaster79 think he means underrated meaning in guitar magazine he qualified about 80 something in rank, jimi hendrix being #1 of course but it is a matter of oppinion and in mine they should both be #1
LED ZEPPELIN Yeah, Johnny used D standard through a huge chunk of his career, I not sure why, for me it sounds great, it gives more of that cowboy sound if you will, especially playing open strings. It doesn't matter much in this song, but he plays alot of blues in D, which as you know moves everything to the standard E positions,it makes some diference, also when he plays in the key of G. Anyway big Johnny Winter fan here :) keep up the good work new Johnny Winter tabs are hard to come by.
+Marco81blues Cool i will keep that in mind if I do more johnny tabs, I came upon johnny through his brother Edgar, another crazy albino dude, who is excellent multi instrumentalist. i,m not a big fan of detuning a guitar, i would rather play tunes in standard, it just does my head in tuning a guitar up and down ha ha
True Mr Winter was no David Gilmore, but I grew up on the both of them melody and speed(blues speed) Steve Via has amazing speed, but Johnny had blues speed which is different. He was a master not only for his playing, but his free spirit Willy Nelson look. It's done bro.
Johnny is one of THE MOST UNDERRATED musicians ever. His voice goes hand in hand with his guitar wizardry!
BLUESMAN EXTREME!!!
Not underestimated!!
To me Johnny is in a first place tie with Stevie Ray and Jimi Hendrix for greatest of all time. Everyone else just takes a back seat
Cool. I got Johnny, Stevie, Duane, BB, and Albert
Rory, but Buckethead is my favorite guitarist. I can and do listen to him play all day long
My favorite slayer since 1970. Visited his grave couple of years ago. It was very surreal to be there.
The most Amazing Guitarist of All Time!

The comment not the music.
What a voice not to speak of the guitar work... fantastic Johnny! Now the rain is coming down. Not from the sky but from my eyes ...
You're right about both guitar and voice. He was an underrated singer. I always preferred his natural smooth voice, as opposed to his growl. He sings beautifully here, as he does on "Stranger," my favorite of all his songs.

THis is an amaing song, I love the feeling and the lyrics.
Johnny started tuning a whole step down in 1984 when he started playing the LAZER it had 10 on it and didn't like how they felt he was used to 9 to 42 with 24 3/4 Gibson. I'm not a musician so I don't have a clue what all that means but I sure liked his tone on every guitar he had except the Lazer.
Yeah Johnny went to one of the best I cried when he died what are the most underrated guitar players in the world he was great he will be missed love you Johnny
My favorite Winter song. Met him in Chattanooga, TN shortly after this album came out. He was so shy and we were so intimidated.
Haven't heard enough blues in the last several years, but I'm making up for that now. Johnny top 5 blues rock guitarist no doubt

Does anyone have a bootleg of this song. No one I know has heard J.W. do this live.
he must have spent some time in Seattle.
@ShredMaster79 think he means underrated meaning in guitar magazine he qualified about 80 something in rank, jimi hendrix being #1 of course but it is a matter of oppinion and in mine they should both be #1
that's always been my feeling
had on cassette- but i had to sell it -SAD
Here's the guitar tab for this track.

+LED ZEPPELIN Nice man, but why not use Johnny's tunning? DGCFAD
+Marco81blues I didn,t know it was out of tune, but ahh well it still plays ok.

good looking out''
