  • After more than a year of traveling in Africa with poor sandal substitutes and sore feet I have finally acquired a new pair of Teva Terra Fi 5 Universal Sandals. This is the ongoing story of my love affair with Teva, the saga of my loss in Senegal but mostly it's a thorough review of my new Teva sandals.

As a little kid all my aunty would buy me was Tevas and north face stuff. Her logic was as it lasts.
So I was at my grandmas storage and guess what? Like 7 pairs of wearable 20+ year old Tevas and a ton of old TNF gear in XS/S.
I can still fit in the tweed baggie shorts though and they are fantastic. So.. are they really expensive if I only have to buy a piece of gear once a decade? I say no.
And thank you for repairing your Tevas and making them last longer. You’ve done the world a tiny service in that, seriously.
I wear the universal originals I always have.. my newest ones I got the neat color blocked though instead of the zig zaggy pattern.
And these really do help knee pain.. big time. Buy Teva and forget about it
Edit: forgot to mention (you do though) in salt or freshwater Tevas excel for one reason.: the strap is PART of the shoe.. no welds or glue. This means the sandal would have to disintegrate and technically.. they’d still be on your foot. That’s the shoe you want doing foreign travel

Thank you for sharing this great story. Your grandmother was very wise.
Yes, there are times when spending extra for good quality will actually save you money - and Teva and North Face definitely fall into that category.

I hope you love them as much as I do. I'm closing in on having mine for a year and they're still like new (once they get a good cleaning).

Excellent, thorough review from a person who _really_ knows Tevas and travel.
I've enjoyed my Teva Hurricane XLT2s, but after two years, they're coming apart.
As a bigger, heavier person, I'll try the Terra Fi 5s which might feel better and last longer.

I’m purchasing mine today. When I looked at the sizing chart tho, despite this being a women’s shoe, or a men’s specific shoe, it had both sizing in a conversion so I was confused if I should order a size 8 in women’s or a size 6 in men’s. What did you end up doing?

I wear a W11/M9. In EU I'm a 43. I got the Men's 9. If your foot is narrow, I'd go for the women's shoe. If your foot is wider, I'd consider men's.
Alternately, I recommend finding your EU size and use that, since there's no distinction between men's and women's shoes.
Take a look at the label on your favorite pair of shoes and see if it gives your EU size.
Also, if you go to the REI website, they have experts you can actually consult with online to help you find the right size.
      Good luck. Happy walking!
