I've been binge watching this series and am really grateful for it. I read this book a few years ago and really enjoyed it but I knew when I was reading it I wasn't getting everything out of it that I could have. I remember thinking I wish I could take a college class on this book, with someone who could guide me through it, and help me understand it better. You guys have been that for me. So thank you for what you're doing here.

The more I learn about ceremonial magic the more I notice how specific it is (follow these 25 steps flawlessly with pre-consecrated implements, or your gonna get got), so like why even go there? To exercise one’s own will?
Practically speaking I feel like you can and should have a proper hierarchy of evil. Murder is pretty obviously worse than stealing. Stealing a watch from an old man is not as bad as killing an old man. Maybe I don’t understand what you mean but I just think there is a hierarchy of evil. The medievals had a point with demonology….
Also your example of the puritan team up with the shaman to fight evil spirits seems to point to this
