Russische klokken
In het Rusland van voor de revolutie klonk overal klokgelui. Niet het donkerbruine, plechtstatige gebeier zoals van de Utrechtse Domklokken, maar meer het bonte carillon-achtige geluid van klokken en klokjes die met een netwerk van touwtjes door één enkele speler werden bespeeld. Ook de jonge Sergej Rachmaninov hoorde overal klokken. In zijn Kolokola roept hij lang vervlogen tijden op uit het oude Rusland. ‘Klokken begeleidden iedere Rus, van zijn kindertijd tot het graf, en geen componist kon aan hun invloed ontsnappen, ook ik niet.’ In Kolokola komen ze in alle soorten en maten voorbij, van het geklingel van zilveren arrensleeklokjes en feestklokken rond het huwelijk, tot de onverbiddelijke doodsklok.

This piece shows how great Rachmaninoff was in music, one of the greatest composer of all eras combined.
Absolutely agree. There’s something so very special about so much of his work, The Bells is a masterpiece for sure along with Isle of the Dead, 2nd and 3rd symphonies, 3rd piano concerto and the Paganini variations All the equal of any other composer.

Outstanding work (what orchestration!!) and performance! A jewel that shows the genius of Rachmaninov, one of the most underrated composers by academic critics whom don't have any musical knowledge or hear...
Those with the genius to compose, do.
Those who don't, become critics.
Though I've yet to hear this work live, of all the recordings I have encountered, which is a fair number, I count this as the finest. Orchestra, chorus, soloists and conductor all excel, there isn't a single weakness. Andrej Bondarenko possesses one of the most beautiful bass/baritone voices I have ever heard.

What a fine performance. This was Rachmaninoff's favorite of his symphonies.
I swear, I listen to this every single day in my car on a CD from 1994. I'm a clinical level addict of Rachmaninoff, something about this just speaks to my soul, it carries me up in a whirlwind ready to battle, fight, assert my masculinity/youth against an angry, evil horde. Jk, not in the way you might think, just in a way of: don't mess with me.... especially the 3rd movement, my God, it is divinely creepy, and should send chills down the enemies spine, and inspire your friends in battle to join you mightily and proudly! This is a war against nihilism friends, and this music punches it in its blackhole guts!

Not so common to have such a huge Rach-fan like you. I’m so glad to see those honest words from deep of your heart, really touched me… This symphony from his late period is not that easy to understand like his famous second concerto and symphony, thank you for your personal understanding and introducing of the third movement 😂😂, which is in my opinion, hardest one to understand in the whole cycle… thanks again from a Rach-lover in Beijing.🎉🎉🎉

By far the best performance of this amazing work I've ever heard. Why James Gaffigan is not appointed chief conductor of one of Europe's leading orchestras is beyond belief. Of course the Radio Philharmonic heard here is a magnificent orchestra of which I believe he is guest conductor but maybe he should enjoy an even higher profile. On Y.T. there is this performance and also Romeo et Juliet (Berlioz) again outstanding. This young conductor clearly is a major talent. This upload is greatly appreciated.
Try the Pletnev recording. In my opinion it is much more "Russian." Also the amorphous quality of the music is given a more rhythmic structure. I am sure you will like it: ruclips.net/video/z1XWAdpf7Rw/видео.html
I just saw him conduct Eugene Onegin at the Met, he's doin just fine for himself. Performing at the Met is a big deal no matter who you are.

IMO the finest work of Rachmaninov and certainly one of the finest of the 20 th c. This performance is by far the best on Y.T and the best I've ever heard, conductor, orchestra, chorus soloists all outstanding.

3rd movement, most masculine piece ever written! More so than rap, rock, jazz, hip hop, country, or ancient jewish music of chanting/singing.

the sleigh bells are my favorite
Fine performance, very enjoyable to see in detail as well. There are some strange balance issues, (the brass not coming thru very well, more seen than heard....MOST unusual, that!), the tenor possibly wanting a fraction more time to breathe... but generally finely sung; thank god, a soprano who doesn't sink the whole thing with an outsize wobble, (i mean the voice, of course...)- as too often in this tender wedding moment, Bondarenko also choosing lyrical regret more than the stark, dark, depths...but allowing fine text coloring. The Dutch tradition in Rachmaninoff seems solid; this work was dedicote to the Concertgebouworkest and Mengelberg.
And the wonderful soprano is Marina Rebeka :)

I've just read that this choral sinfonic work was based on Edgar Allan poe.....I liked much more what I read here.....bells related to Russian life before revolution

Im Allgemeinen eine Langweile, obwohl der Bass sehr künstlerisch singt.
The programming of this concert was way out of line. How could Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten by Aevo Pärt be flanked by these two very loud and noisy pieces (Mussorsky & Rachmaninoff). Had to leave the Concertgebouw in the replay at Sunday to prevent loosing the Pärt-feeling by this sentimental Rachmininoff violence.:-(
OK the programming might have been totally wrong ,but to trash this great work like that, is just plain stupid. If you dont have any affinity with this aspect of Russian music, so be it ,but what you wrote is very childish and immature
I am talking about the balance and the mindset of the pieces. Nothing wrong with loud and impressive Russian music but make it just a loud program without reflective pieces which I love dearly. The way you think you can qualify someone with another opinion is not very constructive or mature.

Yes, but context makes the relevance in this case. When someone is shouting to his neighbour during a popconcert it is considered normal but whispering to a neighbour during a clavichord-recital is considered not done. The context makes the relevance not the absolute volume of the voice. You might call that childish and immature if you lack any empathy or only can think in abolute values.
