I was waithing for a good explenation for sooo long. In my community we were learning about the gift of the spirit two years ago, and we were tought that there is two tipes of speaking in toungs, one of them is speaking in an other language you haven't learned, and the other one is praying in an angelic language. I had really serious doubts about the second one, and I just couldn't accept it. I couldn't prove that why it was a misinterpretation what they tought. I felt bad that I couldn't believe in that, and tought that something is wrong with me , that my faith is not strong enough. But as how you explained it, it is so clear. God bless you!!
I understand that frustration. I am so grateful you found the explanation in the video truthful and helpful. Glory to God! Did you see the other two videos we made on tongues? ruclips.net/video/_1zh_mlrMBo/видео.html ruclips.net/video/6bb59BST-ns/видео.html God bless you!
It never sat right with my spirit when people spoke in tongues because it truly felt self edifying and in-censer. This is a wonderful explenation THANK YOU SO MUCH. God bless you sir.
Scripture: If you have the gift of tongues, "pray also for interpretation" or go with someone who has the gift of interpretations, or else "be silent" lest you cause confusion. For you are to have someone interpreting, and if you don't, you are hurting your fellow believers and potential converts. Also, it is not required to be Saved.
Here is a thought to consider. When Paul says "no man" people take that to mean no one in the world or no human atleast understands. We are not Pauls immediate audience. Consider that if I talk to my assembly and say "Everyone is invited to my place after church" would they all walk away with the understanding that ive invited the whole world to my house since i didnt specify and said "everyone"? No they know they are the audience and I'm clearly talking to them. So if this is a strong possibility then this hekps debunk that Paul was referring to an "unknown" language as in no one in the world knows it. Rememeber in KJV unknown is italicized.
The emphasis on speaking in tongues have been magnified in the twenty-first century. Whenever Paul was talking about it, he was referring to the earthly languages. He doesn't attempt to explain about the types of tongues that are given to the believers. This issue was crucial only to the Corinthian Church he dealt with the matter only in his first epistle That is dead. He never mentioned about it in the rest of his twelve epistles. Why? Because it wasn't his primary focus area in his calling. Some say it is a birth right when we are born again. They say Devil doesn't understand this language so that we can freely talk to God. Does that give sense? There is no such prayer languages in the scriptures. The angelic language Paul spoke about was to provide much emphasis to the supremacy of love. "Even if I speak in Angelic language" 1 Cor 13:1 doesn't necessarily mean that he speaks the language No! Not at all. Many professing Christians love to speak gibberish. The sad thing is that they don't know what they are speaking. But, they say they are being edified . They are barely able to explain what sort of edification it is. I have checked out several articles on this topic. The way this one is presented is very appealing and well descriptive. Bless you!
Thank you for your thoughts. We are grateful you found the explanation in our video helpful. May God bless us all as we continue to study our questions deeply.
Hmmm. This seems to focus heavily on the parts of verses that support the author’s views and gloss over the parts that clearly encourage us to pray in tongues, not during church meetings (without interpretation, anyway), but in our personal time with God.
Thank you for your comment. Did you view the entire video? This video is the third in a series we did on the gift of tongues. We cover the other verses you mentioned in the previous two videos. In them, we look at every passage in the Bible that mentions the gift of tongues. We hope you're able to view them and let us know what you think. Hi, I’ve commented here before and I still think your wrong and that you do very little to actually support your case here. You say that 14:2 is descriptive not prescriptive, but don’t really give a lot of evidence for this. In that verse it says they are doing this “in the spirit” which certainly seems to add some validity to what they’re doing, because people can’t do something that is condemnable “in the spirit” in Paul’s view. Now I know you’ve said in the past that the “spirit here is man’s spirit”, and looking at this again I may change my position, it looks like it is possible to interpret it either way, either being the Holy Spirit or man’s spirit, which is why so many translations have it both ways. BUT, Paul doesn’t seem to use “spirit” in a negative way in this book even when he could be referring to men. So your original argument on what it means could be wrong, and even if it’s right, you still have the problem of this word not really being used negatively by Paul. You again try to say that “to edify” is a bad thing, but every other instance where Paul uses this word, and there are multiple even just in 1 Corinthians, is used positively. If Paul’s aim here was to say this was a bad thing then why use a word like “edify” that he always uses positively rather than “puffs up” that he uses negatively in the same book! 1 Corinthians 14:6 need not mean he’s bringing a revelation in tongues. In fact, all throughout 1 Corinthians Paul distinguishes between these gifts as separate, he doesn’t combine them as if you could prophesy in tongues. You AGAIN misunderstand the analogies Paul uses for harps, battle trumpets, and foreign languages. I’ve addressed this before and you commented on the commented, but never responded to this point, and are now bringing it back again. Paul is specifically saying that for the purpose of edifying the community tongues are like these things, BECAUSE THEY ARE UNINTELLIGIBLE, which is why he would rather them prophesy, which IS intelligible. This comes out most clearly in his analogy to other languages in verse 10. If Paul is thinking the gift of toungues is just other known languages, then his analogy of them to other known languages makes no sense. You don’t compare two things that are identical by analogy, you compare things that are different. Your right that words spoken in a tongue were meant to be understood by the hearers, but Paul specifically says this is by interpretation, not because he would just be speaking some foreign language to people who can already understand. Your explanation of the gift of interpretation also seems a stretch because if tongues were used in a mixed group where some could already understand and translate for the others, then there is no need for a spiritual gift of interpretation, they can just do it naturally. Again, it makes no sense that an unbeliever would come and say Paul was out of his mind if he was simply speaking a foreign language to foreign people, in fact they’d probably think he was impressive to know that foreign language. Even if people didn’t know the language themselves, they could very likely identify other languages, just like I can identify all kinds of languages without knowing them. The thing is, you have to make all of these videos putting out little fires that your interpretation causes in the text, when if you take it to mean what it says, that “no one understand” and that they “speak to God not to men” then it reads very smoothly and easily.
We appreciate the civil discussion. Thanks for commenting kindly. It does appear that you're commenting before either watching the entire video, or truly hearing me out, as we deal specifically with your first objection in context. As before, you have given me plenty to think about. However, the only reason there was a fire to put out in the first place (as you describe this video to be) is because I had read 1 Corinthians 14:2 out of context. Once I read it in context, it all made sense, and the fire was sufficiently doused. One obstacle to my ever believing modern day "tongues" are what is described in the Bible is there have been times I have been in assemblies of people who have "taught" in tongues, and then someone "interpreted," and the interpretation ended up being 100% false. That was the case in both teachings and "prophecies." Additionally, there are different denominations "speaking in tongues." In the same book (1 Corinthians 1:10-13, and other passages), Paul specifically condemned religious division. Yet, apparently, the Spirit is inspiring different groups to teach different doctrines in revelation, tongues, interpretations, etc. That confuses me. Yet, God is not a God of confusion. Again, I appreciate your kindness. This is our final planned video on the gift of tongues for a while. We may release one eventually on a question someone recently asked: "Was the gift of tongues a miracle of hearing?" God bless you.
@@TopicalBibleStudies Thanks for responding, I have appreciated that you've responded each time. I hope though you can see that the obstacles you just put forth in your reply are not textual problems, which should really be our only basis for what we beleive/don't believe, but experiences. This seems to me comparable to someone saying: " One obstacle to me EVER believing Jesus wanted us to join local churches is that I have been in many and they're all terrible people and they have acted crazy and there are a bunch of denominations." Hopefully you can see that if that arguement shouldn't hold water, then neither should yours here. The gift of tongues being faked, and people with the gift of tongues acting out of line has literally nothing to do with whether it is a true gift taught in the Bible. People can also abuse prophecy, either by faking it (as we've seen in many cases sadly) or by giving false prophecy or even by giving true prophecy but leading people away from God with it. Heck, people even justify their insane biblical interpretations by appealing to "prophesy", but despite all this, prophecy is a real spiritual gift that can be used rightly. I just think you should examine yourself closely, because when you say something experiential like this prevents you from "ever" believing in this way of seeing tongues, it screams to me that you do have a bias to interpret the text in a certain way. Now, you may still be right in your final conclusion, but still it would be good to examine that bias so that you can be more confident or possibly change your mind if the evidence demands it. Thanks again.
Totally fair. In fact, I have called out many people who have used experiences as their basis for the conclusions, or what they felt in their hearts, rather than logic and Scripture. That is why I have not used this experience as my basis in the videos so far, and I have also not used it to guide my interpretation. But you are right, I should not be as closed minded to say "One obstacle to my ever believing..." I wouldn't want someone blocking my point of view in that way. Open-minded and civil conversation can accomplish much. We all have biases, and it helps to know them before approaching Scripture.
