    Counting music is something I feel many "Freestyle" dancers struggle with. When we dance, we are just reacting to the music, so often there is no need to learn learn how to count. When I 1st started dancing my friends and I simply did routines together to music and didn't know counting existed. One day a friend of mine taught me how to count music and this instantly expanded my understanding of music. The 8 count is a measurement of music that most modern day music follows. When music is made, musicians follow an 8 count. When you dance, whether you know it or not, you are dancing to an 8 count. Start practicing counting in your head until it just happens naturally. Hope this helps =)

    Cool wall of speakers! And thanks! We just had the 8-count discussion in our band. The whole time I thought music was counted in 4's, but now counting everything in 8's is really blowing my mind... listening to the 8-count is like listening for the entire phrase rather than each individual measure or chord change.

    I still don't see the difference between 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2 or 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4 I just seems to be a matter of what numbers are sequenced to the same beat. What am I missing?

    • @VincaniTV
      @VincaniTV  6 лет назад +4

      Same thing man but it all follows an 8 count. Try counting while you listen to music. You will find the the singer, drummer and other musicians follow the 8 count. Some music is harder than others so try listening to some basic songs 1st.

    • @WAGNERMJW
      @WAGNERMJW 6 лет назад

      Come on man. Be a mensch. Try to understand the less gifted. If it were the same thing, you wouldn't call it an eight count. I watch/listen to your video and I can count the beats 1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2 just as easily as I can to 8 with you. What tells me count 8 rather than just six or up to 12 etc. What tells us that this is the beginning and the end? I see other videos and they say that just about everything is a 4 count. Still, same problem. What marks the end of the count?

    • @VincaniTV
      @VincaniTV  6 лет назад +3

      Exactly! This is why counting is so hard. So like I mentioned you need to practice counting to different music to 8 and then you will start to feel when the start of it is. I recently worked with some dancers that have been dancing 10+ years and they still struggle to find the 1 count. It is not an easy task. Try listening and counting to some hip hop beats, listen to when then mc starts his lyrics and ends his sentence. Here you will start to find the beginning and end of an 8 count.

      Marvin Wagner Hey buddy, your comment is a year old so this is probably not very useful, but for anyone reading this contemporary music tends to have a structure that revolves around the 8 count. In music there are various time signatures (3/4, 6/8, 2/4, etc) but an 8 count is most popular nowadays (in sheet music it is represented as 4/4 and is usually known as the common time because of its popularity even in classical music). The reason it is not 12121212, or 12341234(even though they technically ‘fit’ the music just fine) is because the structure of the song is such that one musical ‘statement’ will only make sense when counting 8 (if counting 4 it would be like cutting a sentence in half, it just feels incomplete). Try it with a pop song and you will see that even the lyrics are aligned to that principle, so you will actually get a complete sentence in that eight count. Of course there are songs which are not as straightforward to explain but as a whole they would follow the same principle. Hope this is helpful to someone xx
