👍🙏 They were inspired by great blues artists like Howlin’ Wolf. There’s a great Howlin’ Wolf album called The London Sessions which was done with an all star cast backing him, all of whom I am sure you would know.

As has been already pointed out above, Led Zeppelin were largely inspired by the Blues. Most popular music, including Rock, Country, and Jazz, all have common roots in Blues.

The thing about Led Zeppelin songs is that they get better every time you hear them. There's just too much going on there, to take in the whole thing on a first listen.

One Christmas, my 10 year old son got a CD Walkman. He got into my collection, & walked in the kitchen with his headphones on singing the opening lines. My wife’s jaw dropped, she shouted “What are you teaching him?!” I replied “The Classics,” ✌️❤️🎶

OMG Zeppelin is the best. You dyneed to be high to appreciate every note, word, rhythm, riff. Lord it makes me crazy that people keep inply these great groups of the 60"s and 70's could only compose and perform high. And that everyone listening were in the same state. I vould put on a Zeppelin album today drink my ice tea and be in heaven just listening to them.

After the Beatles broke up is when I was re-introduced to Led Zep and Pink Floyd. These two bands dominated the next 15 years of my life. Everything else I listened to (and I listened to a LOT!) went in-between other stuff by these two bands. Now (as others have pointed out) 40-50 yrs later, my body and my mind perk waaaaaay up whenever some of these songs (like this one) come on, or come around on one of my playlists. This one is top 5 because it was and remains so unique as you pointed out: all the different beats and lines of music going on at the same time, and how those “strings” or “branches” weave together and move apart to rejoin again and come together….and it’s hard hard rock with that drive, mixed with the foundation of blues and some real jazz mixed in here and there too. Even Plant’s singing is different, and very complex….masterpiece if never mainstream….it’s like part of the Canon of rock.

    • @j.d...
      @j.d... 17 дней назад +6

@@kamojet yeah but you're talking about blues that had probably been "borrowed" before as that was very common with the blues. Robert Johnson for example stole a bunch of stuff and made it his own. Zeppelin's sound though was like blues on steroids. The way they attacked the blues was uniquely powerful. Also understand that about 80% of Zeppelin's catalog is original material. A lot of bands were covering blues songs at the time, not just Zeppelin.

Black Dog might not be one of Led Zep's very best songs, but it holds a very special place in our hearts, because it is the very first song on the album "Led Zeppelin IV" --- the album that Stairway to Heaven is on. Back in those days, we always listened to full albums all the way through. So, as soon as you heard those opening sounds of Black Dog, you knew you were in for a rockin' good time that would culminate in the greatest rock song of all time - Stairway to Heaven.
We rockers, in those days, really appreciated the technicalities of the music -- so we loved the changing time signatures & complex drum lines. So we didn't really dance to this music. We preferred to close our eyes to hear it better, and then rock out with "air guitar" and wild head thrashing!😆 It seems we were appreciating the music more with our brains than with our bodies.
The somewhat chaotic feel of this song reminds me of energy that is just rockin' so hard that it can barely be contained. It sounds to me like they are all riding as hard as they can, but just barely able to keep the song together, by the skin of their teeth!🤣

I challenge anyone who likes this to listen to John Farnham’s cover of Black Dog. Audio only as he and his band used it as a warm up/sound check song. He didn’t perform it in concerts, but before one gig one of the the sound men pressed the record button. Recorded in early ‘90s when John was in his 40s.

“I don’t know, but I’ve been told, a big legged woman ain’t got no soul”. No one but Robert Plant can deliver those lines like he could. The dude, and the band, were on a whole different level. Led Zeppelin was and still is the greatest rock band ever. Rock. Blues. Soul. Metal. Hard, and heavy, man! There will never be another Led Zeppelin. Thank goodness we have their records.

Again you're talking about roughly 20% of their catalog but even with those the sound and the way they attack the music is unique. Borrowing the blues has always been a very common practice. But Zeppelin took it to another level and went on to write a bunch of killer original material. 2 things can be true at the same time. Zeppelin can be both heavily influenced and heavily innovative. They are also among the most influential rock bands ever.

My step Dad was exhausted and let me drive his brand new 1979 Mazda RX-7, from Pacifica, Ca to Santa Barbara on the Pacific Coast Highway! I was in Heaven. I asked if he minded the music, he said no and was out and snoring softly. I drove the snot outta that 5 speed. As you explore their catalog- study more of Plant's personal music. Tall Cool One for power. Heaven Knows for style. Meanwhile- just enjoy. They were ALL talented guys and they will bless you ears and your soul. ❤

I see Zeppelin happening in 3 phases: early, which is deeply blues-based and sometimes a bit derivative, but always very creative. Zeppelin II is the high point of this, Whole Lotta Love, Lemon Song, great stuff. At some point, they really melded English folks traditions into that blues rock and you end up with incredible shit that only sounds like them and no one has ever really been able to successfully copy: Over the Hills and Far Away, Stairway, the Ocean, Black Dog, Rock n Roll, Song Remains the Same, the list goes on. This is mid period Zeppelin, and it is glorious and brash. The last couple records deepened into something else that I can't really describe, but I dearly love. A song like I'm Gonna Crawl is 100% in the blues tradition but somehow sounds unique. Kashmir, Carouselambra, In My Time of Dying, Night Flight... these are all unbelievable. The performances have so much spirit. Everyone is playing so creatively. Lyrics and melodies are unforgettable. They are just as good as anything that ever happened in rock and roll music.

It's not just you! I'm a guitarist and back then I was a beginner and this song drove me nuts trying to play it. It's unique and I
can't think of another song similar to it. Best rock group of all time in my opinion.

just as a side note, there is a RUclips audio only of this song used as a sound check for the audio technicians for a John Farnham concert in the late 80's early 90's. Well worth a listen as John is one of the best singers you will ever hear and his backing band are top notch!

Polo, my friend. Jimmy Page at the point that he joined Led Zeppelin had already done so much. A lot of his stuff is uncredited. He was in Yardbirds with Clapton before this. They definitely aren't like anything else the world had heard up to the point where they hit the scene. Pioneers man. Just like Ozzy Osbourne gave us the birth of Metal with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin gave us the first sub-genre of Metal - Progressive (personal opinion on that last one). John Bonham said that his sound came from trying to play Buddy Rich drum parts backwards. BACKWARDS! Dave Grohl's drumming is so reminiscent of Zeppelin for a reason. I'm so proud of you for taking this journey. Fan Favorite? I'd say my personal favorite is Immigrant Song. Thanks for everything man!

Jimmy played bass with the Yardbirds while Jeff Beck played lead guitar. Both after Clapton had left the band. Then Jeff left and Jimmy took over. Earlier he played on some Kinks, Them, Donovan and many others as a studio musician. Page is awesome on that first Joe Cocker album.

Our hometown went without a clear FM station for years in the 50’s and 60’s.
Songs like this came through late at night when the nearest FM
    signal pierced through the interference.
Hence, the reason I was always tired in school !

Widely underappreciated, that one. I started listening to Led Zeppelin during my mid-teenage years around 1990-ish, and my overall appreciation for their music has eroded over the decades since... probably from listening to it way too much. The Rain Song will never get old, though.

Well, a lot of Zeppelin's discographies take liberties with old Blues songs from the early 1900s.. they hammered those old tunes into modern rock versions. Of course, they have loads of original work, but they do have quite a number of songs based off much older and relatively obscure toons that deserved to be remade.

For most die hard Zeppelin fans this song is one of the classics to end all classics but it is rarely a favorite mostly because it got played SOOOOOOO much on the radio. Tru Zeppelin fans dig way deeper into their catalog for the personal favorites. The innovation of this song though objectively speaking probably puts it as one of their best. Crazy thing is the bass player wrote this guitar riff!
