Surprisingly, there were very few fluent English-speaking Germans recruited for the operation. Many Germans responded to the request for English-speaking Germans to volunteer for a mission but when the volunteers were assembled in an auditorium, an announcement was made in English: "If you can understand what I am saying, remain here when you are dismissed." Then the group was called to attention and dismissed, but only a handful remained, the others did not understand much English, some only knew "Yes" and "No".
On the American side, there was no shortage of German-speaking Americans as there were many communities where German was often taught to a child before English. Two old friends of mine that were born in Minnesota around 1915, Wilhem Nickel and Konrad Bauer could both speak fluent German.

They were going to try Herr Otto for this also.
But the defence stated that the Americans were up to the same tricks. So herr Otto was not tried.
However, the victors write the histories. 😉

you're right. The Americans started a useless war, millions died. And for what?

@Buddy-nt6rd So the only spies and saboteurs who should not have been executed were the German ones? Your glorious Führer put a bullet in his brain in a Berlin bunker. It’s been 79 years. Get over it.

He was a spy caught in the an American uniform behind American lines. Spies are shot! At least he was given a trial and allowed a a defense. Since spies wearing theiir enemy;s uniform are considerd so dangerous the rules of war allow them to be summarily shot without trial. If he'd been in German uniform he would have been a soldier fighing behind enemy lines. Once he put on a US uniform he forfeited any claim to being simply a soldier.

@@sfm5s According to my modest command of German: "der Kummer" is the literal translation of grief. Alternatively "die Trauer " will do, among other translations.

In English, when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking, but in German it's the opposite.
