hearing bob fulton give the play-by-play makes me tear up. I listened to every game on the radio and that brings back some memories with my dad i will never forget.
yah, it does me to. I'm a UGA grad and fan but I lived in Greenville growing up. I thought Jim Phillips and Bob Fulton had the smoothest voices. Munson was the character of those 3.
I was a Pinkerton Security Guard in the GameCock locker room that year. The word Awesome is the only one there is to describe the experience. To see everything that the support people had to do to make the team function was amazing. The team was outstanding and very professional. They were all polite and very friendly. It was a great job.
Since football wasn't on TV as much back in that day and especially the Gamecocks I enjoyed thoroughly listening to Bob Fulton every Saturday as a kid do play by play. I was under ten years of age but man it was awesome listening on my Am/FM small radio my grandmother bought me for my birthday one year. Those were the days i tell ya just using your imagination to picture what was taking place as Mr. Fulton commentated, he was the BEST!!!!!
@Mac of All Trades I’m not disagreeing with u at all about the Navy game. Might have been the biggest trap game ever considering the circumstances. Just saying that SC wouldn’t have beaten those other teams. Might have had a chance Vs BYU but I just don’t see them beating Nebraska or Washington.
@Mac of All Trades I went to several of those games that yr. My dad had season tickets. I’m still amazed that SC has never even played in a major bowl to this day much less won one. Hopefully Beamer gets them headed in the right direction. They broke my heart so many times as a kid I found another team. Lol
I was at the Clempson game. The classless hillbillies turned the scoreboard off 30 seconds after the game. Then while the Carolina fans were celebrating on the field the PA announcer said the stadium would be closed in 10 mins.
Mike Hold, Ira Hillary, Thomas Dendy, Kent Hagood, Raynard Brown, Seawright on defense and yes Allen Mitchell and Coach Carlen!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was there for every home game and every away game except for the win at Notre Dame. The 22/21 win at Clemson was a fun day too. The 10 game win streak in the ugly all orange uniforms that CU wore also ended
I was living in Greenville during that season. It really magical. Everyone except die-hard Clemson fans were pulling for the Gamecocks and then they lost to Navy. It really was cool to have an underdog team make a run. With all the Power 5 alliances you really don't see that happen as much these days.
@@anthro1019 But in defense to Oklahoma State, they had Thurman Thomas as a running back at Oklahoma State. Not to mention McCallum was a BEAST at Navy!!! And had a few good years with the Raiders. (They just weren't used to seeing an option offense like Navy at the time.
I get chill bumps looking at this 1984 video. the Gamecocks got some great breaks that year. Let's "time capsule" Mike Hold, Tommy Suggs, & Jeff Grantz , 3 greatest QB's of the 20th century gamecocks. Maybe one day they'll land a Tim Tebow .
They were building something great. The Fireants, Coach Morrison in all black on the sideline, garnet helmets, and a great offense. Harold Green, Robert Brooks, Todd Ellis, Mike Hold, Sterling Sharpe, and the list went on. Joe passed from a heart attack the following February, and a long, dark time began in Gamecock football. The Cocks were in the football wilderness from 1989 to 2001. It was so sad to watch, given the enthusiasm that Coach Morrison had built around the program through the 80s.
I agree. Joe Morrison was OUR guy. He gave the football program an identity and created a new culture. Black Magic, 2001 entrance, The Man In Black, Fire Ant defense etc. I'm proud of the Gamecocks under Spurrier and Holtz. Spurrier has lifted this program up like no other. But I still say that Joe Morrison was our best coach, because he got everything started. The '14 Gamecocks couldn't hold a candle to the '84 team. The '84 team had guts and fought to the bitter end. That was the most exciting football season in our history. Our success that season was not expected. Damn I miss Joe.
I agree. The Gamecocks were on the way to becoming a perennial winner with Coach Mo. We really needed him to stick around for a while because he was an excellent coach and recruited some very good players at Carolina. He was a players coach and was a great player himself in the pros.
Coach Morrison lived right down my street. (Carlen lived across on my street too until he left in ‘81. In ‘84 I was 10 and my family went to every home game. My parents had the same season tickets for 40 years. Coach Morrison and his wife were always friendly to the neighborhood kids dropping by there house at Halloween or to raise money for a school fundraiser. Heartbroken when he died. After the ‘89 - 2001 drought it was soooooo refreshing to finally have another good coach and a good team. Sorry it didn’t last. Truly hope our current coach can recruit properly and build a dynasty. God knows the Gamecocks deserve one after all these years!
Reminds me of a story from the ‘84 squad as told by the late Del Wilkes, during the Notre Dame game Irish head coach Gerry Faust was apparently a wreck, chewing on his sleeves running up and down the sidelines acting like a maniac while Joe Morrison was cool as could be smoking a cigarette. He said that every player in that stadium probably knew who they would rather play for. Spurrier may have won more games but there has never been a cooler coach of the Gamecocks than Morrison.
I was wondering if you had this video for when Mike Hold dropped the ball at the fridge's feet. This quality is about as good as it gets for that era. With no pictures taken of that video I'd like to see that moment with better quality for a screen shot. Thanks
orange paw Yup because the ‘84 Gamecocks were frauds. Looked like utter fools in Annapolis against Navy because they fell asleep thinking an Orange Bowl birth would fall in their laps. Never underestimate a team that has nothing to lose.
South Carolina comment stereotypes Number 1) The ClemsonersThese guys like to stick their nose in everybodies buisness and act like they know EVERYTHING about football by looking at the INTERNET in such matters when you see a Clemsoner. Ignore them until 1 year when someone calls them sad or disappointingNumber 2) The Fans The fans are commenting on South Carolina videos all the time and makes sense why.. their fans of the team and usually say #GoCocks or #SpursUp Number 3) Others Others usually don’t give a shit about other people and actually stay on topic, they’re usually smart and when somebody talks shit to them they usually fight back using google or yahoo and not with the brain
@gvillegmcck I hate to bust your bubble, but if Morrison had lived he would have only had one more coaching season in 1989 under the cloud of the investigation on steroid abuse, then he would have been fired or forced to resign. Some of his assistants actually did time for illegally providing steroids to players. Only one of the assistants ever coached again and he was a low profile player/personnel director for a pro team.
I get that you’ve probably only been a fan of your Clemson Tigers since 2015, so let me inform you of something: Outside of the past 5 years, Clemson’s history is not much better than South Carolina’s. Hick.
"The high powered Duke Blue Devils." LMAO! For a fan base that was always ripping the "little" ACC schools (as you do now) you guys sure were ready to bring the goal posts down after beating "high powered" Duke and NC State.
That's not necessarily the case. Cut the guy some slack anyways as he doesn't appreciate that dude's comment about "Go 'Mids!" on this particular video's page. I didn't appreciate anyone just trying to rain on every Gamecock fan's parade that watch this video. NoPancakeMix, appears you don't have that much class dude.

First 10 win team in history, Fire Ants defense led by All American linebacker James Seawright # 45
Loved the FIRE ANTS
What a great year
If we’d have just beat navy we’d a won it all for sure
Wait, you couldn't beat Navy or Ok State but you would have beaten BYU, Washington, or Nebraska?
and ive cheered for todd ellis, duce staley, and lou holtz

God I miss listening to Bob Fulton. RIP
Man, I wish we beat Navy and win out. That National Championship Trophy would have been in Columbia instead of Provo, Utah.
They couldn't even beat Oklahoma State in the Gator Bowl. ANY trophy would look good in that dark empty chasm USuC calls a trophy case.
Will you get your sorry butt back to Death Valley, please! Fucking idiot.

the current team should watch this so they can see how to catch an INTERCEPTION when its thrown at them...
