Ep. 14: My Deer Friends and New Fawns!!! June 2018

  • From a cold April, to a very wet May, and ending June in a blaze of heat, my deer friends still love to stop by for a nice corn snack, or an apple. The mommas have now given birth. Elly had triplets....again! I saw Marcie with her two new twins. And Momma had a new fawn, too. I am anxiously waiting for them to bring the little ones up to meet me.
    As you can see at the end of the video. I lost one of my very dear "deer friends". The triplets will let me get withing 3' of them...but they are still nervous. If I can get them up to me, I will try bottle feeding them to help them grow.

      Hi Peter! All is good. It was tough to lose Ely, but her little ones did quite well. Elly Mae sprouted buttons (antlers) 6 months late, and all that time I thought he was a girl! LOL I had to rename him Eli, and he and Birdie continued to come visit me almost every day. :-)))

      Hi Toby. I am glad to hear you take care of the little ones when in trouble. When Elly passed in late June, her 3 triplets were only 3 weeks old and struggled. They were afraid of everything, and it was very difficult to get close to them. Thank goodness, my neighbors pitched in to help feed them, and still do. Two of the triplets, Birdie and Elly Mae, are still around and come to visit me for a snack. Little Wrigley disappeared in late August. We don't know what happened to him. If you haven't seen this video, this was during a critical time when the triplets were very small and skinny and we were trying to keep them fed.

Other deer saw this bond, and started to trust me more and more. It is an exhilarating feeling to get to pet a wild deer for the first time......and gets even better when you can see they get excited to see you outside bringing them a snack. I miss Elly so. She was a huge part of this puzzle that I miss every day. Amazing creatures, aren't they? I don't feed my wild deer friends, but after 20 years of respectfully acknowledging my local wild deer family, I have been welcomed as a buddy, they are busy animals with schedules and are keen on routines. I've trained some in the past how to cross streets safely/ calmly BEHIND cars. Joy to see passed down generations! They enjoy being able to relax, not have to be stressed. I try not to make direct foreward facing contact with them, less predatory/aggressive stance. Nice to sit & relax with them, sweet that they wait to see me, that momma left fawns w/me for 4 hours this past summer😁🥰 Now in rut, everyone mingling in the fawning territory..w/agitation .. ears back, tail wag, "..ggggggggrunt.." ..nuzzle..= "I'm happy, gimme scratches buddy!" Learned so much from them, 🥰
    They can be playful like a dog, as aloof as a cat.. I do all I can to be safe & keep them safe. The more I can learn, the more I can share!

      Hi Johnny. I would have thought the same thing when I began all this. What I found out amazed me. They don't trust me as a human. The trust me as some kind of nice animal to them. If anyone else come close to my yard, they run! If I am not by myself, they won't come up. I am the only thing they come up to...besides the turkeys. They know me by sight, but mostly from my voice because I talk to them the whole time I am with them. It is a very strange relationship.....respect and trust from both of us. It gives me a chance to see a very gentle side of them, and to be a part of their daily life......even if it is just 5 or 10 minutes at a time. :-)

      Very touching video. The only observation is that these beautiful creatures get used to your human touch and later they couldn't make a difference between you and a fucking imbecile that will profit and do them harm. Meanwhile, please keep on giving love and tender care to these beautiful creatures. You are my hero..!!

    Oh my gosh ... I fell in love with this man's kindness and generosity and seeing all the dear little animals he has befriended but I NEVER suspected the ending. It made me burst in to tears when he said how his Elly had died. I'm a softy for a good story. This really hurt after seeing all those beautiful scenes of him stroking and loving his deer. But I'm glad Elly brought him her babies, knowing he would help keep them safe. Poor girl. He's a living Saint Francis.

      Hi Silvia. Losing Elly was difficult. She had become a good friend. Her triplets have found a safe place to live down the road. I walk down multiple times a day to see if they are out and to see if they will take some food from me. They have gotten very skittish, but they are still surviving, even though they are small. :-)))

    I have an orphaned fawn I'm bottle feeding this year, it helped me to call to him like a doe calling for her fawn to get him to come to me and eat, seems to settle his nerves and put him more at ease..
    I step out with a bottle and call and he comes out of the woods near the house for a bottle and a little grain and such, and usually some apple for dessert. Then he hangs around and licks my arms for a while while I use my hand as a tongue to groom him like a mom would do, then back to the woods where he stays.. I also walked him around nibbling at plants with my hand like a mother would do to show him what plants to eat.. I'll wean him in another couple of months.
    Of course now if I'm late with the bottle he'll be right outside at the front door waiting for me. Otherwise a few doe bleats and he comes a runnin from the woods.. I have 11 acres fenced with goat fence, so he's safe in my woods till he gets old enough to jump the fence and leave on his own.
    My place is full of the same wildlife, deer wild turkey and such in the yard.. I also ended up with an orphaned racoon last week, don't know what exactly to do with it yet. I think he'll have to go to a wildlife rehab this week.

    • @flyfish0822
      @flyfish0822  6 лет назад

      That is so awesome! You are doing a wonderful thing! These triplets were so scared after losing Elly, and so difficult to even get close to them. Two of them have learned that they love apple pieces. I do the same when I pet them.....try to mimic the mom cleaning or grooming them. The one almost falls into a trance when I do it cuz it likes it so much. They had gone so long without nursing from their mom that they had little interest in a bottle, and I didn't want to grab them and force it on them so they would not lose trust in me. There are woods behind me and across the road from me, and an 11 acre field next to me. They never seem to stay in the same place and can be hard to find at times. Other times, they will see me and walk right up to me (two of them). The third one is the biggest and very nervous about getting close to me. I am hoping that when they get big enough for corn, all 3 will come up each day.
      Love your story~!

    • @KillerNetDog
      @KillerNetDog 6 лет назад

      Yeah this little one didn't show any interest in the bottle either for a few days, but he demands it now.. I ended up using a regular baby bottle as he didn't like the one made for animals. I would never be able to find him in the woods, but a few doe bleats always gets him to run to me. I started out just bleating softly when I gave him food until he learned my voice, copying calls I found on the internet of does bleating for their kids.. I still bleat softly to him while he's drinking from the bottle, make alert noises when cars go by on the road out front or other things he needs to be alarmed at.
      They should be able to survive without milk by now but they do need that extra fuel for growth the milk gives them till about October. And fortunately he only trusts me so far and doesn't trust any other humans.. At least so far. My next challenge is to try to teach it to avoid hunters if I can..
      The deer here have fawns inside my fence every year, it's kinda like a deer nursery. The fawns can't get through the fence or jump it so they stay inside the fence while mom hops the fence to go out browsing, and they just hang out in my pasture until mom comes back at dusk. usually about October the fawns realize they can jump the 4' fence and leave.I'm guessing this little buck might not leave until his first rut.

      I almost forgot, I did make a little video of him.. He was pretty beat up, but most of it has filled in, he'll only have a couple of scars left on his head.. So I named him Scar. ruclips.net/video/_lZrivIe_oQ/видео.html

      Hi TX.....what a cool name....SCAR! I don't do facebook and don't have an account, but wish I could see it. Is there any way you would be able to post it to youtube?
      I couldn't figure out why a couple of the triplets did not seem hungry to eat apple piece the last couple days. One turned it's nose up again this morning. They don't like this kind of apples I bought a few days ago. LOL I guess I will be making a trip to the store this morning :-)))))

    • @flyfish0822
      @flyfish0822  6 лет назад

      That is just incredible. I wish I could do a fence area to keep the little ones safe, but they seem to be doing okay wandering. They are just so small....no milk since 3 weeks old.. and they are 9 weeks now. Not sure if they would even consider milk now. I wish I could get these 3 to bottle feed. I try using the doe calls too, but guess I better look them up on the internet to get better at them. I always talk to all my deer when they are here. I want them to learn my voice, I can see some of them down the road and call them and they will come down to my house. Oh yes....The young bucks will be leaving soon. They come to see me for a little over a year, let me pet and feed them....very comfortable. When summer hits, they start getting more nervous. Levi and Buster are shying away from me now when I pet them. Levi is just ready to branch into 6 points.....Buster 4 points, Byron's spikes never got more than an inch long for some reason. Come late October/November, they will disappear, only to show up on the outskirts of my yard from time to time and too nervous to come back up to me. The girls, on the other hand, love coming up all year. :-)))
      Love your story. Scar is very lucky to have you there.

    although it's sad at Ellie's passing I just know the baby fawns will come to you to help them. They saw their mother trusting you and they will too! What a beautiful video of human and wildlife on this rainy day here in Tennessee. Thank you

      Hi Robert! The triplets had a tough struggle, as you can see in the later videos. The boy, Wrigley, disappeared in August. Little Birdie and Elly Mae come to visit me almost every day now., and are in my last two videos. I love when they stop by to see me! :-)))

    Please tell me, how they are friendly and trust you . I'm been trying and feeding squirrels but they are still very wild don't trust me. Deers are also coming to my property in winter night mostly , where there is an apple tree . I assume that they like to eat it's branches. They are more difficult to communicate. I'm very close to stree but behind my property there is big forest. Can you tell me your methods thanks By the way I'm in Canada i can see you are in U.S. our environment should be almost same

      Hi Ted. I started by rolling an apple to them from a long way away. Over the next weeks, I would try to roll the apples a little closer so they would come closer. I would talk to them the whole time so they would learn my voice. I think that is a big key! When I started to put corn down for them, I would let them come up to it and each time I would try to stand a little closer to them without spooking them, and I would talk to them. It took 1 1/2 years for the first one to come right up to me and let me pet her (Elly). The other deer would see this and just started trusting me more. Some deer have never come up to me. Others are more brave and get closer and closer and finally let me pet them. I had to be VERY patient! Good luck to you! :-)))

      Hi Tom! it took a long time for them to come to trust me. It took 1 1/2 years before the first one, Elly, came up to me and let me pet her. I have petted 17 different ones now. I have seen them so much that I can tell most of them apart just by their facial features. They all look very different to me. I had to name them to keep them all straight! LOL

    This is how things are supposed to be: man at peace with nature. ❤️
    I photograph and take videos of deer and I would totally do this and pet them if they come up to me. But I feel they don’t completely trust me yet and I am afraid of deer ticks.

    • @flyfish0822
      @flyfish0822  4 года назад

      It took me 1 1/2 years of giving them snacks each day, talking to them, gradually getting close and closer to them, before the first one, Elly, came up to me and let me pet her while she ate. I pick the ticks off them, when they let me, and smash them on the ground. LOL Patience, my friend. :-)))))))))))

    I don't have deer, but my wild babies are possums, wallabies, currawongs, and a very young echidna who passed away just yesterday. Because of really bad Bush fires here in Tasmania recently, and lack of water, there wasn't enough food for her to find, they eat ants, termites and beetles. And by the time we got back home from being evacuated, she was already under weight, we couldn't find her before we left as she is a wild creature, she goes where she wants to go. The wildlife caregiver took her to try to help her but we still lost the poor wee thing. Thankfully, my wallaby friends were ok, but I do have one young possum still missing, so she may have surcomed to the fire or the smoke, I remain hopeful that she'll turn up. It is wonderful when nature allows you to interact it's very rewarding watching each new generation grow up. Thank you for sharing, your deer friends are beautiful. Cheers from Tasmania!

      Hi Howlling Wind! Wow....what a story you have. I am sorry about the wild fires. I can only imagine how devastating things were there. Thank goodness, some of your friends made it through the fires. I am happy you liked the video, and wish you all the best in Tasmania! ;-)))

      @@flyfish0822 thank you for a reply, well we've now had some decent rain, which will go a long way to putting the fires out. From just after Christmas, lightening strike started the fire deep in the inaccessible wilderness, but then we had gale force winds which just cranked the fire up and it ended up that half of Tasmania was burning. But our wonderful fire fighters who are predominantly volunteers did a magnificent job given what they were up against. There was no loss of human life, not so sure about the wildlife, and in my area only 8 houses couldn't be saved and 1 shed, I think that's pretty good! My community is a lovely caring one and the local supermarket gave the firefighters their groceries for free plus a bit more. Recently we had a fundraising event to raise money for new equipment for them. Well, you didn't need to know all that did you?! Thank you for your kind words, be happy, be well, be safe. Cheers!

      Wow....this sounds devastating, but I can tell by your comments that it could have been much worse. Thank goodness for our emergency responders! Way out west of me in California, they had some terrible wildfires again last year They had the same type of "Howling Winds" (see what I did there? :-))) as you did. Lots of homes and lives lost. Glad to hear you came through this with such a positive attitude and outlook. Stay safe, my friend, and best wishes to you and yours. :-)))

      @@flyfish0822 thank you, and yes I did see what you did, a play on words can be fun. When I first got introduced to the internet and all you can find, many moons ago now, I was told I should have a name, so there I was sitting at my computer, one wintery night, with the wind raging out side. Then the wind came into the house sort of, and made this wooo wooo wooo sound and it sounded a little like a howl, and so my internet name was created. Be creative, Be well, Be happy, Be safe.
