I walked half a mile up the hill after the dead tree (following the path), and he never told me I was going the wrong way, insanely bad quest.

For what it’s worth you do get some loots to sell and skill points by cutting up some poachers

Quest is EZ bois. After you manage to beat the wolves, just ignore his drunken requests to go exploring and carry him back to his wife. And it completes the quests
