- On December 15, 2011, honoring the 70th anniversary of the fall of Bataan and the subsequent death march, Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) proposed S .2004, legislation to grant the Congressional Gold Medal to the troops who defended Bataan during World War II. The next day, Congressman Martin Heinrich (D-NM) proposed its counterpart in the House of Representatives H.R. 3712. New Mexico PBS has produced a program with some of the NM survivors of the surrenders of Bataan and Corregidor. www.newmexicopbs.org
God bless those men and their comrades. My father, a prisoner of war of the Japanese captured on Corregidor, would have tears in his eyes seeing this documentary.
My father survived the Death March. He was a wounded medic in Okinawa during WWII. He never claimed for disability he claimed it was his duty to served. God bless those men and their comrades
I was part of this production. The studio was busy with crew getting things together for the production. When Pete Gonzales entered the studio he walked up to one of the photos hanging as backdrops. He pointed at one of the soldiers and said "That's me!". We all froze. everything stopped. You could hear a pin drop.
If you look at the shot of Pete and Bill together, like at 5:47, you see a young man in black pants on the march, just to the left of Pete. That is Pete Gonzales. Brave and wonderful men. I will never forget.
I knew a man who was a survivor of the death march in my hometown of Pawtucket, Rhode Island... His name was James Brennan, God Bless them all...
God bless these veterans for their service and sacrifices. Genuine American heroes.
Gen. Baca passed away 9/15/2020. Thank you sir for helping these veterans tell their story.✝️💔🇺🇲
As I sit here in Manila, Philippines, I cant help but think of the pure hell these brave men endured. The heat and humidity here is oppressive. I just can't imagine what these young men had to fight through. We will always remember your sacrifice and bravery. A lot are gone...but never forgotten. Thank you...
Ty from a vet in the USA
God Bless America and God Bless the Philippines
Salute to all who fought and survived...to protect my country....that's their sacrifices will remembered forever..
I am living in Philippines and now learning some of the history. I will visit this historical place this weekend and learn of the brave men both Filipino and American who fought, died, and survived here.
My grandfather was corprol ROBERT DURAN 200TH DIVISION ARMY COAST ARTILLERY CORP. RESIDENCE- NEW MEXICO IF ANYONE REMEMBERS HIM I WOULD LOVE TO HERE ANYTHING I TRY TO KEEP HIS MEMORY ALIVE EVERYDAY GOD BLESS U ALL AND THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SACRIFICE. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Our mail delivery man Tommy Hatter was on the Bataan Death March, I was just a boy 13 or 14 I was getting the mail from Mr. Hatter one day and saw an Army canteen on the seat beside him, he told me he was on that terrible death march and that he would never go anywhere with out a drink of water in reach. I grew up in Hadensville, Va. we had quite a few WW2 veterans around us including my Dad and our Post Master who had been shot down over Germany on his 5th mission and lucky to spend the last year of the war in Switzerland. I spent 18 months in Vietnam as an Air Force weapons mechanic, quite a few of my high school friends were in Vietnam too.
im a pilipino and my grandfather also fought in bataan,to all of you hero of bataan and corrigidor,to the men and women that gave there all, salute to all of you sir,you will never be forgotten,we are all greatfull of what you did, your the real badass soldier sir.....
Thank You. Thank You to your valent grandfather. 💙💜💚🇺🇸😊✨
God bless these men
I was born in Albuquerque in 1950, some of my childhood friends fathers survived the infamous Death March. We learned about the awful history incident in grade school. My memory is fading from my early years, however, I never cease to not remember these brave men. God Bless Them.
My full respect!
I have what is QUITE POSSIBLY the ONLY American Flag that was in the Bataan Death March. My Uncle Jack was a Survivor of Bataan. His friend had a small American Flag that he had stuffed in his Pants and hidden during the March. Uncle Jack said the plan was to fly the Flag over their Camp when they were Liberated. During the March the Japanese stopped the Column and Uncle Jack's Friend was shot. Uncle Jack knew about the Flag and managed to take it and stuff it in HIS pants without being seen when the Column started moving again. Uncle Jack managed to keep it hidden from the Japanese during his ENTIRE time in the POW Camp. The Flag never flew over the camp but IT DID Survive and when Uncle Jack died it was given to me. It's my most valued Possession but if I knew how to go about it or had any form of documentation I REALLY would like to have it in a Museum for EVERYBODY to appreciate. THATS the story I was told when it was given to me. The only solid evidence that supports the story is a record of Uncle Jack joining the US Army in February of 1941. He was from Dallas TEXAS
64 yrs old, an i just read a book (john crisson) that had this as a part of the story, Where have i been ,never in my life. Did i have any idea that such actually happen thank you for your sacrifice an may God continue to bless
I always salute to all Filipino and American soldiers for their sacrifices
during WW11 from the bottom of
my heart ♥ 🙏 🇵🇭 🇺🇲
Ive road the march on motorcycle and to think of walking it with no food and no water in the tropical heat my heart goes out to all these men for their service and sacrifice
Rest in piece to all Filipinos and American soldiers who risked their lives for our freedom...
Thank you very much...
Bless every one of you . You are the best of humanity that life can produce.
I am from Bataan and I was born and grew up there. I am very disappointed the Philippine government did not put enough attention to preserve the historical landmarks to memorialize the infamous Bataan Death March.
First off thank you from the bottom of my heart my grandfather was also in the March I know it was something that a lot of you soldiers didn't talk about most of everything I know about my papa is what I researched. His name is Robert Duran army he inlisted in raton new mexico if you remember anything I would really appreciate it
what are you talking about. The WW2 memorial sites there are well maintained. There's also KM Markers along the Highway of Bataan to Tarlac where the Filipino and American soldiers marched.
@@randomly_random_0 he said it is not enough.
These men deserve 100 purple hearts. Probably more.
😢 thank you protecting my country(Philippines)..
Israel Tesoro well, they have to because Philippines that time were US colony. Our country is their unsinkable aircraft carrier. The US soldiers involve there were just following orders and fighting in the name of US not Philippines.
@@ryanlovejiyeondinosaurrr4641 I like how you say that the Phillipines was " The Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier" that is Spot on as far as I'm concerned! My Father PFC Eugene H " Dog" Underwood helped liberate the Philippines...His unit retook Corrigador, and Bataan....along with Battangas Olangampos Subic Bay Leyte Luzon and Manilla...he passed away in 1997 and shared with me war stories... just saying....God bless you and yours from California.... Eric Underwood class of 81 Downey High School California
@@ericunderwood1482 My great grandpa were also a Filipino soldier and he survived the war. Didn't met him, because he decided to leave the Philippines and live in the US. My grandma proudly told me about the bravery of my great grandpa when he shot the Japanese plane with only a rifle. I don't know if it's true. haha I only remember that he is also excellent in stealth and jungle warfare.
@@ryanlovejiyeondinosaurrr4641 that's AWESOME...I believe that your Great Grandfather was a excellent shot....if He wasn't he wouldn't if even attempted that shot . My Father tought me to shoot and I can knock a bird outta the air with pistol or rifle! Thanks for sharing..... always wishing best for you....
I salute all the soldiers who have suffered during the war. And to the Lady who thanked the Americans for protecting the PHI...your colonial mentally are very strong. Philippines would have not been in war and suffered so much destructions if the Americans didn't occupy us in the first place. They were in the PHI to protect their own interest. Filipino soldiers who fought with the Americans were lied to that they will be given US citizen, US pension etc. etc. By the way Spain was a neutral country during WW2 and the Germans didn't occupy them. Glad the US bases are no longer in the PHI.
Indeed a very tearful moment for our heroes specially the fallen one,my father in law survive the Bataan death March and openly narrate to us what hellish things really happens to those who experience Bataan death March, malaria, starvation and drinking their own urine just to survive, that very fearful ,tearful events till he is alive had suffered the post war effects like a sudden wake up fright trembling, in tears, truly Filipinos and Americans have suffered on this death march, my snappy salute to all of them, May GOD bless them all with Love...
Thank You PBS. Absolutely my first channel to watch, when I have a TV. But my first channel on the radio too💙💜💚🇺🇸😊✨
As a Filipino/American i have no words to express my sincere eternal gratitude for your sacrifices as a child my father shown me part of the Death March trail telling me spots where fellow Filipino and American soldiers fell and collapse and die or shot to death showing me crosses on the trail where they where hastily buried.
Looking into Pete's eyes, I remember that same look in my father's eyes when he told me of the horror he endured during the "Death March". For me it really puts thing in perspective when I about people (myself included) grousing about how bad they have it.
Thank you for your service
From the philippines we remember
You are my heros
Thankfully there were survivors, that must have been awful, thanks for sharing this history with me. I just am at a loss for words, so I will just listen.
you can see thru there eyes the hell of struggles in that day,, i can't help but cry while watching this.. a big big big salute to these personnel both Filipino and American's who risk there lives just to protect there soil.. big big big salute
America needs to understand ,no surrender , God Bless those Veterans , but if you think your enemy is going to treat you well.
What a great interview just a shame we still haven't learned anything from these men no winners in war
Salute !!
My grandfather Robert Duran. Army
a big bis salute to those who serve in the philippine campaign.
Thank you america
Glad that these men are finally getting their stories out their for the world to see and to hear. No more suppression to appease government rules and regulations. The attack on the Philippines was massive and as bad as any SS unit in Europe that matched, tortured and murdered their victims... May these men be at peace now. Gratitude that they faught and perished for our freedoms 🙏❤️❤️😓
And just think, you can see the flag trampled now without leaving the US...
At 2:41 the guy in the middle is my grandpa
He is an awesome guy. 💙💜💚🇺🇸
Dose anyone remember ROBERT DURAN my grandfather by the grace of god he made it home I'm the oldest granddaughter he lived to see his first greatgrand daughter then the following year he past I found him and he looked peaceful. It's sad to say that he's sitting in our local cemetery just a marker it saddens me everyday because I can't afford to fix that the men in the video were in the same platoon.so I ask if you can help in any way. My heart goes out to those crying about how they disrespected our flag Thank you and God bless our heeos
We know there is a Japanese memorial in the U.S. on the Uluchion islands in Alaska, where they landed with troops, just before the battle of Midway. My WW2 buddies were pretty upset about it, I still am💙💜💚🇺🇸
this was the brave and strong!
Godbless the heroes of world war 2 now still the world needs you....
My late father (1919-1998) was in the field artillery of the Philippine Army under the United States Armed Forces in the Far East.
He was able to escape Bataan death march, when, along the way he was snatched away by some natives waiting an opportunity pull out some prisoners and load them to their buffalo cart and run away. He was lucky as he was sicked with malaria then. He joined the guerrilla movement.
Dear Millennials...
Dear millennials what? I'm resurrecting this bs.
Millennials were fighting the wars of the last 20 years. Shut up dipstick.
Can i ask you, would you do it again?
The fall of Bataan at the Bataan death March😢
The internet says 200th covered and protected troops as they retreated.
7 thumbs down as of 7/25/20 makes you wonder.
Japanese
Why no Movie or TV series of this ?
John Wayne, Anthony Quinn. 💙💜💚🇺🇸
My grandfather was 18yrs old when he was marched in Bataan with U.S military my grandfather was split up into 6 groups and was sent to Luzon with japanese army tortured. He and 123 Filipino and American dug caves for japanese luckily they were saved in 1944 by U S air core . I've read the newspaper manila times as it red U.S troops captive by japanese army.
I still blame every generation of every family of all prison guards. They should be shamed today in public and forced to pay forever for their family war crimes.
If they feel remorse and acknowledge their ancestor's deeds then they're fine
Its 2024. You know the war crimes America has done in the Philippines alone. You know know how New Mexico became a state? The long walk? Should I hate Kit Carson's grand kids? The sins of the father.
❤🇺🇸🇵🇭💐💐💐🌹🌹
Going home my papas words
Thank Bill Overmier. You were diffently out generaled. Douglas MacArthur froze. I've got nothing good to say about him. 💚💜💙🇺🇸
many of the Japanese guards were born and raised in California, they had no more choice than we did.
My great grandfather was one of the victim of the cruelty of Japanese soldiers. They killed him worst like killing an animal. Japanese soldiers were so evil during that war.
Without the bombs the men that lived would never have made it much longer. My Dad was one who lived.
its ba ta an not batan
my grandmother said she had to hide from the japanese
my father was an infantryman of the 5 1st division usaffe survived the death March and the camp o' O'Donnell pow internment camp. a cousin arsenio esperanzate was cross number 147 at the tombs of the unknown soldiers in the libingan ng ng mga bayani in taguig city, those crosses were now all removed to accommodate the fake hero Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
No mamas, no papas, no uncle Sam. The battling bastards of bataan.
Funny how much America hated us. They didn't even want us as a state. Yet they had to respect the blood our grand parents shed.
Philippines citizens should be more welcome in America
To hear these guys talk about laying their lives on the line for their country makes me angry when I think about guys like Cheney and Trump who did everything they could to dodge military service.
+NOODLES Right, noodles...and you want to be the proverbial 'lion' led by a 'donkey'?
Research that saying, and get back to me.
Once a coward, always a coward...
Rick Hagedorn Disgraceful. This is a typical example of how Trump plays the audience, first he makes a stupid or disgraceful comment, and when he gets a lot of Flak, then he changes the tune and says he was 'only joking'.
NOT presidential....
Rick Hagedorn You should look into the Dunning-Kruger effect :-)
It's like debating 10-year olds...
I wonder why you americans can always talk about trump?
@@user-ew1sb9nu4dUnfortunately he is a problem here💙💜💚🇺🇸
Don’t put your coffee down to shake these brave Americans hand , you doofus…..😢
Maybe trump and administration should watch this documentary to learn that our soldiers in captivity suffered enormous tragedies and many gave their lives. He had the sickening audacity to tell Senator John McCain that he , trump, only admired soldiers that were in battle. Please, this person has to go. He no more represents this country than my left foot.
Comment makes no sense.
