    Just tried it. WORKED EXCELLENT. You don't even need to lay it out. Just grab the tarp at those three points while standing and it folds itself right up!

    Just got my first tarp, wasn't sure if I had loops along the spine of it so I had to unfurl it to see before my first backpacking trip, later next month. I could not get it to fit back in the bag. You saved me a lot of hassle. Got my sub for sure!

    I dont comment much, but i have been subbed for a while now. I missed this video and ran a search on youtube on how to fold a tarp. Since i am a subscriber of yours i seen your vid and clicked it first. That is the neatest trick i have seen in a while...55 years old and still learning. I dont know how many videos that are out there on this trick, but i only needed to see 1. Now i just need to find something to do with the larger silnylon stuff sacks i sewed to fit my tarps. Thanks for sharing, Strength and Honor to you as well.

    after about 5 or 6 uses and giving up trying to fold my DD 4x4M tarp back into the bag... boy howdy was this super-useful! The initial fold is always the worst when solo, and this takes out the first two!I was able to fold this more efficiently solo than i was yesterday morning with help, and in less time. After this initial trick, just keep folding to avoid making air pockets; boom, i can fit the tarp back in the bag, *with extra guy lines and stakes*.

    This is a nice way to make folding the tarp more manageable but once you reach this stage where you have effectively quartered the size of the tarp, go by the rule I learned - fold into thirds not in half. Trust me - I don't know why, maybe because there are fewer folds, but it always seems to fold better in thirds every time.

    Outstanding technique Luke. The only downpoint is, that - depending on the ground - one should only walk on a tarp if the ground ain't rocky or filled with poky stuff. One little thorn or sharp stone and you got a hole. But in general, a great tip my friend! Cheers, Marc

    Nice trick! But does it work on rectangular tarps as well, or only squares? I've been trying to find a good way to pack up my 4x3m tarp in windy conditions and this looked very promising. I'll have to try it.

      I just tried it with a 2x3m Tarp. It does work. But of course after the initial step you do not end up with a square but with a rectangle. But you can fold that down just as well

    What about memory creases won't that weaken the fabric over time or is that not true??? The only reason I ask is because I was told not to fold it, but to just stuff it into the stuff sack to prevent memory in fabric..

    • @VilleVaananen
      @VilleVaananen 3 года назад +1

      It's true, but a good tarps lasts long enough (several years of use) even with the memory creases.

    • @RujioWR
      @RujioWR Год назад

      I cant commnt on trueth or not since I just started folding. But you can also vary vary the folding slightly. e.g. dont fold it exactly in half all the time but 1-2 cm off the middle and vary that a bit. It will not give a perfect fold then but should avoid memory creases pretty decent.

    • @RujioWR
      @RujioWR Год назад +1

      and also: Once folded a bit instead of folding again you might consider rolling it up to further reduce number of folds.

    Great tarp folding method. But it doesn't address the fact that all tarps and tents are supplied with storage sacks that are too small. Folding a shelter in a controlled factory environment and doing the same thing in the field, often with support lines remaining attached, are two entirely different things. I always toss out the supplied stuff sack right away (it's just going to be frustrating to use) and buy newer, larger stuff sacks to make things easy. The manufacturers supply too-small sacks precisely because the extremely small package is attractive to the consumer. Shame on them all.

    • @VilleVaananen

      DD always has big enough storage sacks. I never had trouble stuffing them. Not even with bad technique.
