Weymouth Carnival 2000. One of the best! Millennium year. Spot yourself if you're in it. 28 minutes.

Fantastic floats in one of Weymouth's best ever carnival processions. 1000s of people came to the town from far and wide. It was a favourite event for the decades before and after WW2 but sadly declined in the 2010s, caused partly by unfounded fears of insurance costs and the dreaded 'Health and Safety' myths. Fortunately, the carnival is being revived with enthusiasm for 2020 onwards. In 2000 blacking up faces was still regarded as a tribute to Black culture and music; nobody took offence then. (It's a pity about the intrusive Tannoy commentary). The Town Crier is Doris Eastwood

I recognise a few people in this video from school...The good old days when the carnival was fun before health and safety ruined life...I cannot believe all the black face tho wow things have changed 😳

The difference then was that blacked-up faces were a form of tribute, never insulting in this scenario.

I remember working at the Dorothy Cafe during carnival days. Good old days. ( I was 12). I doubt they would let me work now
