I would love it if you talked more about insulin resistance. It really slowed my weight loss down last year even with doing IE and exercising until I was prescribed Metformin. That has helped me tremendously in being able to lose weight consistently while following intuitive eating and exercising. I feel people really need to pressure their doctor's to test them for insulin resistance instead of just the A1C and glucose tests.

Agree, I finally found a doctor willing to test my fasting insulin along with other things and not just my blood sugar. My blood sugar levels looked normal because my insulin was working overtime to keep it that way. Never felt more empowered now I have a doctor who listens to me and makes me feel in control again 👏

@@JamesTaylor-cl4pq If you're obese like me you can definitely shed pounds with IE. I have lost 42 pounds already with IE. I don't feel deprived in the least and eat whatever I want. I have more energy and don't feel so bloated like I did when I was bingeing. So in my book I am winning. My success is not defined by your opinion.

@@OB1Emobi insulin production works, until it doesn’t. Just because your insulin in a ‘healthy’ test subject can manage a one time binge of pizza doesn’t mean it is designed to keep handling such an inflood of carbs and sugars over the long term.
This is one of the reasons diabetes type 2 develops. The poor pancreas is struggling to produce so much insulin and the body has no place for the storage of those carbs to go except for fat. And what isn’t mentioned much here, but the worst fat of all, is the one that surrounds critical organs and is called visceral fat. You can’t physically see visceral fat, but it engulfs the abdominal cavity and also attacks the liver, leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

OMG this is such weird timing! i’m studying pharmacy and we’re currently doing an endocrinology module about hormones and obesity, diabetes, etc. insulin resistance does play a role in weight gain, but our bodies are so complex and there are so many other factors that contribute to how we each store and lose fat. There’s other signalling molecules and agents secreted by adipose tissue that also stimulate and/or suppress insulin release, so it’s really not so black and white ! Thanks for the vid Abbey! Such a lovely way to help me go over something I’ve been learning about currently! x

Thank you so much for this video. As a type 1 diabetic, the messages that insulin makes you fat as been extremely damaging for my mental health. Although I am doing well now, these messages made me want to restrict my insulin which obviously over the long term was awful for my body. For any diabetic that needs to hear this, you will not gain weight by covering the carbs that you would eat in a normal size meal! What will hurt you is the increase in appetite from having chronic high blood sugar going into your next meal, this can make you gain weight, because you feel like a bottomless pit! So thank you Abbey for pushing back on this awful message!

Type 1 diabetics need their insulin! it’s so important for you to get the insulin to manage your blood glucose. Injecting a fixed dose of insulin does not act the same way as natural insulin secretion post meals and does not fluctuate as the food is broken down. As a pharmacy student, it breaks my heart to think that there are some diabetics who’re scared to take their medication to help them manage their blood glucose because they’re scared it could make them gain weight

I suffered from diabulimia for about 5 years from 2007 - 2013. I started off small deliberately missing injections to only injecting once a day (if my body was lucky). I’m supposed to inject 5-6 minimum. I lost a crazy amount of weight but I also became depressed, gaunt had no energy and slept all the time. My brother dragged me to A&E one day and I was told if I’d have left it two hours later things would be very different. I am now partially sighted in my left eye and my stomach muscles are paralysed (making my IBS even worse!) Scary thing is it could have been a whole lot worse! Luckily I found a way out. It was more of a mental illness due to other surrounding factors in my life than just wanting to be thin. It’s also not a medically diagnosable condition in the UK making it difficult to treat but if anyone is suffering please reach out to a doctor believe me restricting insulin is not worth the long term damage

Even those with PCOS who have an insulin secretion issue have shown that a caloric deficit is still effective for weight loss. However, having excess insulin (as those with PCOS can) just floating around does have an effect on appetite hence why many folks find lower carb diets more tolerable on a deficit. That was not discussed here and I do believe is one reason those with PCOS especially have a difficult time losing weight is that appetite signals can be affected by insulin resistance.

    • @jessicah3450
      @jessicah3450 2 года назад +7

My experience is my own, but I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia at 16, and PCOS at 25. When my blood sugar crashes, and it crashes hard, what I craved was sugary foods, that would instantly boost that blood sugar. That also put on weight.
A low carb diet helped me lose 120 pounds, making my PCOS better, but getting in ketosis also triggered the dangerously low blood sugar attacks. Having that excess insulin causes the blood sugar crashes. I take metformin, most doctors only treat PCOS with birth control because that stabilizes our hormones and brings our periods back. For me, the metformin's more important, because it stabilizes my blood sugar and insulin secretion. I still ended up in the 30-40 range when I checked my blood sugar sometimes which is dangerous.
Guess it's something I need to watch out for. Intermittent fasting like a lot of low carb dieters do, would definitely be a no for me. It also makes me feel like I am starving like never before, so it can trigger over eating if I let my sugar drop that low. Losing weight was really complicated, but part of it definitely was preventing those low blood sugar attacks. For me, the insulin resistance came before the PCOS, and looking back, contributed to me going from just chubby to obese. I wish more doctors knew the importance of testing for insulin resistance (the glucose tolerance test). Even thin people can have it. My psychiatrist did it, as he found a lot of his patients with anxiety and depression symptoms actually had hypoglycemia, so they improved with diet changes instead of needing as many psychiatric medications. I know low blood sugar feels very similar to a panic attack.

This video was much needed. You are taking down all the misconceptions about food, body, hormones, diet and lifestyle one step at a time and I am here for it. I have been following you for a couple of months now and I always seek out your comments on insulin as I myself have insulin resistance. When I saw the video title, I was so excited thinking it was targeting insulin resistance. I would highly benefit from a dedicated video on insulin resistance, how to increase insulin sensitivity and debunking some misconceptions. I find it extremely helpful to know what some of the insulin sensitivity increasing practices are so I can focus on adding to my diet instead of taking out (like you always say). Diet has been a very emotional journey for me for many years starting when I was only 14. The harsh language about food (and especially sugar) depicted by the medical professional I have been exposed to had me feeling like I was poisoning myself every time I ate a cupcake! This moral stigma needs to go because it only creates unhealthy eating habits and assigns moral values to food. Having a sweet tooth does not make anyone any less disciplined and absolutely says nothing about one's willpower. Thank you for voicing these opinions. Hoping you will see this and put this idea on your list of videos. Lots of love ❤️

The dr told me I’d have a really hard time losing weight but I started working out and eating out less (counting calories) and she was shocked when I lost 55 pounds. I take what medical professionals say with a grain of salt. Especially nutrition advice. Dietitians r the only ones who haven’t given me any crazy advice. I have been waiting for a video on this topic! I found out last year I had insulin resistance (IR), and probably had had it for a while (I also have issues with my liver). About 3 years ago, I tried intermittent fasting, at the horrible advice of a doctor, and that's when I started experiencing symptoms that ultimately ended up being signs of IR. The fasting definitely made things worse for me.
Long story short, cutting back on carbs (not out, just reducing a decent amount), walking after dinner (and other meals if I could fit it in), and making sure the Hunger Crushing Combo is present at each meal, have all literally changed my life. My insulin levels are just about back to normal, my hunger levels are that of a "normal" person, and I'm not waking up at odd hours of the night, every night, feeling like I haven't eaten in days.
Having IR is no fun, but thank God it's reversible!
Edit: I also wanted to note that once I adjusted the diet and starting walking after meals (we're talking 15-20 non-strenuous walks) the extra weight I'd been carrying around slowly started to come off without me trying.

My psychiatrist tested all of his patients for insulin resistance with the glucose tolerance test. Many of us with anxiety symptoms actually had reactive hypoglycemia, the low blood sugar feels like a panic attack and makes depression symptoms like lethargy worse. So he recommended we ate more frequent snacks, he recommended foods that also fit in with your hunger crushing combo, but this was 20 years ago 😂. None of my other psychiatrists have considered diet as possibly contributing to our symptoms, which is a shame. Not saying these mental illnesses aren't real, I still deal with anxiety and depression, but I have reduced my symptoms by learning how to keep my
insulin and blood sugar levels more stable.

Just found your channel, appreciating your nutrition tips! There's so much conflicting advice out there regarding food, exercise, and weight loss, we could go down the youtube rabbit hole forever! Thanks for the informative video. As a 4th year doctoral student in clinical psychology as well, I am always glad to hear of folks benefiting from therapy. Seems like more and more channels are talking openly about their mental health struggles and reducing shame around seeking help, which is great to see. My hope is that anyone suffering anxiety or depression (extremely common these days) talks to a professional without hesitation. Of course you want to find a good fit with a clinician, it's important to feel comfortable with and find hope with that person.
My personal struggle for years has been around weight loss. As a single mom to 4 kiddos post 2nd divorce, working 50+ hour weeks I've noticed putting on about 20 pounds over the past few years. Thanks Covid! I think it also relates to being more sedentary in my doctoral studies (I used to run but hurt my knee in a marathon), divorce stress, PhD stress, mom stress, getting older, you get the idea. I know I struggle with getting enough sleep and have relied too much on processed and fast foods since the advent of Covid. What's really puzzling is that whenever I try to step up my exercise routine or focus more on what I eat I seem to gain weight. Juts this week I put on 3 pounds seemingly overnight by improving my diet and working out more. What the heck? I'd love to know if this is a common phenomenon or how this this happens.

i have a question - one of the biggest messages i’ve seen around insulin is that having it spike often (eating higher carbs and/or not fasting) causes an excess of insulin in your bloodstream and that’s where it can cause insulin resistance - kind of like making your body “numb” to the presence of the insulin and not using the sugar properly. keto pushers have made me worried about this in the past so i’d love for your take! i appreciate your videos so much 💛

    • @AbbeysKitchen

It’s really not that simple and the general consensus is that it’s NOT sugar or insulin spikes that cause DM or IR but a more indirect association through inactivity and obesity. A healthy pancreas is designed to handle carbs no prob

Then why do athletes become insulin resistant despite being active and slim?? It couldn’t be eating the heart healthy high-carb diet, could it? I became insulin resistant as a teenage athlete. I have never been obese.
This is such dangerous misinformation. The strongest predictor of heart disease is diabetes. Diabetes is caused by excessive carbohydrate intake. You are contributed to the leading cause of death by spreading this stuff. This shit honestly makes me scared. We are never going to improve societal health if people don’t get beyond preconceived notions about the benignity of a HC diet.
And yes I think HC is great for like 20-30% of the population. The rest of us should be eating it in moderation, focusing on fatty fruits and nuts and LC-HF veggies. Because if we consume 250g carbs a day we will get diabetes.
It’s ducking insane to me that someone with PCOS is spewing this bullshit. My endocrinologist told me to eat low carb, and she actually has an MD!

Also, it's interesting to hear about insulin levels and fat loss. I remember how ~10 years ago, eating a ton of small meals throughout the day was supposed to be the "secret" for weight and fat loss... which doesn't make sense at all when I heard you say that your body doesn't break down fat if your insulin levels are always high (that is if you're always eating). Maybe I'm misinterpreting? 🤷‍♀️ Still super interesting!

I was diagnosed with PCOS & insulin resistance via our infertility journey. Like many others commenting, I am taking Metformin & Inositol, but I never want to lean on them so I love that you are talking about the nutritional tools!
I have struggled for years with binge eating and am only now realizing that it's likely due to my diagnosis and insulin not absorbing as it should. I used to try skipping meals and did low-carb, but I only gained more weight back when I couldn't stick to it. But my cravings (and thus binge eating) decreased significantly when I started exercising regularly and eating healthy. For me that's: a lot of healthy veggies, plenty of protein, and yes- generally eating my foods 'in order'. Thank you for touching on this Abbey!

Great information Abby! Could you also talk about resistant starch? Specifically studies done over the last couple decades or so showing lowering GI of starchy foods like legumes, potatoes, grains and even pasta by cooking, chilling and then reheating the food? It wasn't until I saw this on tiktok and searched the NIH myself that this isn't a new concept yet I never hear it recommended to diabetics. Seems like a great bonus for meal preppers

I think there is more nuance to this. I was on a low carb diet for years and maintained the lowest weight of my life without restricting anything except carbs. I think it was partly because A) fats and proteins are more satiating so I automatically ate less and B) I was hungry less often and ate less frequently, taking in less calories. HOWEVER it wasn’t sustainable and once I went back to eating carbs I was in feast/famine mode and within a year was at the highest weight of my life. I think saying “low carb diets don’t work for weight loss any more than any other diet” isn’t exactly true and a lot of people know it because either they or someone they know has experienced significant weight loss on a diet like this. But, if my experience is typical (and I think it might be) it doesn’t work on a long enough timeline (like any other diet). Thank you for your channel!! You’ve literally taught me how to eat after like 20 years of trying to figure it out and it’s going great!

Thankyou so much for shedding some light on this massive topic! I'd love to hear more about the intersection between diabetes and intuitive eating, as I'm finding it really difficult to navigate whether IE really can be for EVERYone.
For context - I'm trying to become more intuitive in my eating, however I'm living with my dad atm who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last yr (tho its being treated as type 1 cuz he's producing so little insulin) and since has been prescribed insulin to help lower his BSLs (they have been pretty consistently high despite taking insulin and he has had to increase his dosage recently).
Although he is average/low weight, he is convinced that IE is not realistic for him due to messed up hunger/satiety cues, and is set on foods being deemed 'good' or 'bad' for him depending on how they affect BSLs. I have tried to educate myself, but there rly doesn't seem to be much info out there on if/how diabetics can engage with IE - so any words of wisdom/education about this would be massively appreciated!! :)

@@AbbeysKitchen I’ll admit, the one comment you made on the video that struck a chord was saying that people invested in IF are invested in a ‘fad’ . I am paraphrasing because I don’t remember the exact words, but it made it sound as if what you do (eating all day and even at night, if hungry) is the only way to eat. Just because you feel a little hunger, doesn’t mean your body is screaming for more food. It’s like saying, when lifting weights is hard and uncomfortable, that you need to give it up and only lift to comfort or not at all. A little discomfort is normal and healthy. In mental health, it’s called eustress. It’s a term for being stressed, but the stress is in fact motivating and productive.
IF is not a fad. In fact, many people practice it without consciously realizing it. If you eat during an 8 hour window during the day and quit eating early in the evening, by morning you can easily hit a 16 or 20 hour fast. That’s all there is to it! Of course for those interested in pushing further, for health or convenience, you can narrow the eating window more. For me, It personally doesn’t feel like punishment, and frankly saves tons of time on money, shopping and food preparation.
You mentioned that In IF most people cannot make up calories by skipping a meal or two. You simply can. In fact eating is more mindful because you end up eating a little more food during your eating window. When the right mindset is applied People truly invested in health and the practice/lifestyle also think more mindfully about the quality of the food eaten.
You also don’t mention about other benefits of fasting which surpasses calorie reduction and fat loss. The concept of autophagy is not new and continues to be researched. Autophagy, simply put, is allowing the body to focus on repair, regeneration, etc. during periods when it does not have to put the energy into food absorption and digestion. I’ve heard far more situations of intuitive eating failing miserably for people who simply are not in tuned to what eating for health is.

Hi Abbey...I am a new subscriber to your channel, and found you on youtube last night reviewing WW which I was going to join when I could afford it, but I can't afford it and afford the foods I need right now (I am on disability, and a fixed income along with my husband). I am going to tell you a little bit about myself, so I hope you don't mind. I have some questions afterwards if you don't mind answering? I am 58 years old, and have type 2 diabetes, and have a HORRIBLE eating schedule and diet. My blood sugars are ALWAYS in the high 200's and low 300's due to my eating habits.
I go all day without eating because I'm just not hungry, but eat a dinner, and snack a lot at night...I know this isn't good. I have peripheral artery disease in my feet which I've had 5 stents in my left leg, and 2 in my right leg, and was in the Hospital this past January with a blood clot in my left leg, and it scared me tremendously to quit smoking, but I do Vape which I know is no better, but It's just hard for me to quit. Anyways I just got a new Doctor, and he said obviously I need to eat better because I am obese (175 lbs, 5'4", and I vape) He gave me a meal planning booklet with foods I can eat, and said I need to eat between 1500 - 1800 calories a day. I've never stuck to a diet long enough to lose and be at the weight I should be at...My goal is to hit 130 lbs someday.
I am on a lot of medications for my Blood sugar (Metformin, 2 different insulin pens, etc., along with other meds for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and too many more to list) I am a complete mess, and need help!!! In these list of food in the meal planner is white Rice at 1/3 cup, but I know having diabetes I should stay away from white foods like potatoes, rice, milk, etc... Can I still incorporate any of these in my daily eating with having diabetes? And if I measure what I can have of these would I still lose weight? I think all of this explaining of glucose, intermittant fasting, and so on just confuses the heck out of me, and I just need help so bad. I love most foods, but hate cilantro, brown rice, and just one vegetable which is green beans...I'm not a big fan of yogurt, but have been seeing a two ingrediant dough to make with self rising flour and Greek plain fat free yogurt.
If you could answer any questions I have and maybe point me to the help in finding out what I should do and eat I would greatly appreciate this. I hope its not asking too much from you because I know your a busy mom, and business owner, but maybe just a little guideline to point me in the right direction? Thank you... I enjoy watching you, and enjoy your knowledge and the funny clips you show in your videos which make me giggle a lot... I'm so sorry this is so long!

I feel better when I don't eat veggies at all.But all that people are saying is that "veggies keep you full, eat a lot of them!"in order to lose weight. And I don't want to do that.

I found that I felt pleasantly full / satiated for several hours one morning after I had a breakfast of a psyllium fiber & prebiotic resistive starch smoothie (with berries for flavor), which I had half before and half after a small portion of some fat & protein (I can't remember but it was something like fried eggs or fish). I need to experiment to just tweak it to make it a bit healthier and repeatable, and also whether it was the fiber before, after, or both that was so effective.

I would also love a deep dive into PCOS/insulin resistance. Especially lean PCOS. I’ve read about keto/low GI/plant based (Neal Barnard) and there’s so much conflicting info out there! I feel many women eat well, and even take metformin but still do not ovulate :(

great video as always! one of the reasons I love watching you is because your information tends to be backed up by actual research papers. however, isn't small studies that include a small sample size not as translatable to general population as systematic reviews/ meta analyses? why do you use it in your videos? examples @9:25 and 10:00. I'm not trying to bash you or anything, just genuinely curious what your thought process was on that!

I’m trying to lose weight without falling into disordered eating and it’s hard. I try to eat something and my body’s like “how about you just don’t eat” followed by a bunch of insults.
I play these to remind myself that no number on the scale is worth your mental health and it’s perfectly fine to scale down soda and chocolate without going a complete 180 and starving myself.
    Thank you.

A lot of focus on weight loss but I think most people are interested in fat loss. Of course you can lose weight on a low fat diet or with caloric deficit but much of that weight lost is in bone density, lean muscle loss and similar unwanted and unhealthy weight loss as your body compensated for the lack of protein and fat from under-eating.
Most of us are looking for fat loss when we talk about weight. That comes from eating healthy fat and proteins and severely limiting carbs and alcohol.
Abbey it would be good if you can speak to fat loss and not weight loss in your videos. Also would be great if you can avoid using any kind of the epidemiology studies to reinforce your points as that is not proven theories in controlled scientific studies.

Because of elevated liver values in my blood test I have cut down drastically on my added sugar intake three months ago to less than 50 grams a day (it was anything but intuitive for me). CICO is still key to losing weight, you can lose weight eating chocolate and cake. But thanks to reduced intake of added sugars lately I have much more stable hunger cues, I have stopped going from satiated to ravenously hungry in 5 minutes straight, I have stopped getting constant sugar cravings every evening, I have stopped feeling fatigue after every big meal. It's not intuitive for me to say no to my favourite treats, it's a struggle, but I love how I feel now, so it's worth it.

So, question. When you say the high carb group’s insulin was higher than the low carb group, do you mean their overall insulin levels, or their post-prandial insulin levels? I’m curious if high carb vs low carb diets show a difference in fasting insulin levels 8-12 hours fasted.

Can we please talk about the different between refined carbs and complex carbs? I don’t know about anyone else, but I eat well over 200g of carbs per day, but they’re in the form of steamed or baked veggies (leafy, starchy and everything in between) and whole grains (oats, brown rice, and dark multigrain bread). But my weight has remained on the mid/lower end of the BMI. I’m not genetically predisposed for my weight either. My family is on the heavier side and when I was in my teens/twenties I was about 10kg heavier than I am now at 33. I hate that all carbs seem to get lumped together in one category when I know that there’s a big difference in how the body responds to a few slices of refined white bread versus a baked rustic potato.

The body is crazy amazing! Speaking as a type 1 I have to manually do the job of a pancreas and pizza with high carbs and high fats is a really tricky one to navigate. Pancreases manage it absolutely perfectly of course.

Really interesting and I would love to see a video about flexibele body types. I'm also curious to know if people with a lot of bellyfat, that do workout and eat in deficit that don't lose weight are automatically insulin resistant? I hear these stories all the time. Makes me wonder.

Thank you, I love your videos & love that I can trust them. I'd love to hear more on the calories is king piece. I know the move more eat less bit was the edict for a long time & often drill sargenant style. I thought we had moved away from that as the solution or the problem (which people hold larger bodies responsible for.) Moving more towards not all calories are created equal & while I haven't heard a catchy saying complex systems are at play. I love the HCC it's so easy to consider through out the day, although I didn't make the connection to a calorie impact. (I'm not a calorie counter & won't be but I am a large bodied woman & while I always will be based on society's definition. I'm okay with that, not okay that it's currently uncomfortable to the extreme. Aiming for a baseline of feeling good as often as possible and curious what will bring me towards that! Thank you Abby ❤️
