DIIV: Vans Sidestripe Sessions | VANS

- This week's session features music by LA based, by way of Brooklyn New York, shoegaze/indie rock band, DIIV. DIIV performed two songs, “Horsehead” and “Blankenship” from their latest album Deceiver accompanied by art created by Ben Newman.
DIIV formed in New York City in 2011. After playing with various bands in the area, vocalist/ guitarist Zachary Cole Smith craved a space for his expression and music. A blend of his eclectic taste and inspiration. Over the past nine years, the lineup has shifted, but today Andrew Bailey (guitar), Colin Caulfield (bass), Ben Newman (drums), and Smith round out DIIV.
In 2012 they released their debut album, Oshin via Captured Tracks. Smith wrote and produced the album. In regards to the album's lyrics, Smith admitted he was hiding a bit. "I didn't want it to be about me as a person. The lyrics were almost like universal truths, not personal." As a songwriter, a lot has changed. DIIV's 2019 LP, Deceiver, took the opposite approach. For Smith, the songwriting process became cathartic and a large part of his recovery from substance abuse. Via a statement to fans, Smith described the album as "the soundtrack to personal resurrection under the heavy weight of metallic catharsis."
The newfound vulnerability caught online critics' attention. Paste Magazine praised the album saying, "Cole's experiences in rehab became the inspiration for the group's latest record, Deceiver, and while the album displays the group's darkest sound yet, it also ends up being their most earnest."
Now in 2020, DIVV is doing better than ever as individuals and as a collective. You can catch them on tour now and stream, Deceiver here.
The art featured in this Sidestripe Sessions episode comes from Ben Newman. Ben Newman is a talented artist and musician. Newman joined DIIV in early 2015 and provided back cover and label paintings for the band’s 2019 release, Deceiver.
Vans Sidestripe Sessions are a global series celebrating collaboration, diversity, and expression through music and art. The two-song sessions feature performances from Vans' extended family of musicians, backdropped by original art installations from emerging artists. Each session is unique in sight and sound.

Andrew Bailey's energy and just all around stage presence is consistently fucking remarkable during every live set i've seen. like, you can tell he genuinely lets the music alone move him.
idk, i guess i super dig that kind of approach
Andrew is my spirit animal
@@thebunchofvolume and he's a hell of a choice for one too. so, to me, that reflects pretty positively on you and your sensibilities haha
the backing vocals are just perfect
Colin
it's for gardening
I rarely find videos like this where they get the balance of the backing vocals right, but this one nails it
the power of a good monitor tech
@@luizspindola IEMs, ftw
That guitar melody in the middle of horsehead is so beautiful
this is the first diiv video to hit over a million in a long time. love it
I was just about to comment that. Dude this album slaps, i saw them in vegas their first day of the tour for the new album and they played ALLL the songs from their album and then some, andrew and colin were so sweet.
DIIV in London 1 month ago was the last live gig I saw before the quarantine. If that was my last gig in my life I couldn't be any happier.
Was there too - fantastic show!
my last gig was DIIV in detroit michigan! it was fucking amazing.
not my last gig but one of them ! in paris ! what a show from DIIV.
Luca Capezio I still have it seen them so I am not content about that, lol
@L Alien Well, Italy has cancelled most of the festivals and gigs and basically confirmed no more live music till 2021. So if it wasn't my last gig in life, it surely was my last gig in 2020.
They are my favorite band in the whole world. Since I've met them, I feel like my life changed. I'm so grateful they exist and share their talent to us, people who can relate with the lyrics and with the sound. Their music help me every day to fight against depression and help me to stay alive. Thank you.
I’m like you just know them since 2020 but gradually realize they are helping me get through that f****** depression right now. We are two and I’m sure many more like us… Rock on guys!
I got this entire video as a random ad in the middle of an orchestral music compilation, honestly liked the song and searched it up
I was listening to a mix of my own music and suddenly an advertisement of this song started playing. I thought it was part of the mix, but it wasn't. I liked the song and here I am : P
Seems like Zach and Colin’s fashion has gone from 90s grunge back to 80s housewife gardening.
I'd say that Cole looks more like he's going on safari in this, but each to their own...
they're Brooklynites bro. they pretty much set the trends
@@Da_Wurm They all live in L.A. now, but that's still quite the hub of the US (not an American, so correct me if I'm wrong, but outsiders always perceive New York and L.A. sort of being the main hubs for a lot of the culture - of course, there are other cities and states which have rich musical and artistic heritage, but New York and L.A. are frequently mentioned)
All still seems grunge to me, looks and sounds like a modern Seattle band now
this is just how every band in Seattle dresses now. they'd fit in well up here.
Deceiver is a bloody masterpiece, I’m loving it so much
0:13 - Horsehead
5:17 - Blankenship
wish it were longer, sounded great.
Fire, their style is very rhythmic, the fundamentals and vocals call back to blues for the emotional energy, while also tying in various 90s/70s/60s pop and rock motifs through the tunings and chord progressions. It's kind of like how the smiths seem to play so simply and effortlessly, but still have a lot of things going on simultaneously; but then these guys also thrash and slow down like sonic youth while keeping the structure tight. Lmao i'm going off, it was good, glad that Vans is repping the true alt zeitgeist rn
🔥
Yup it’s shoegazing
The mixing was perfect 😩👌
Why is this old ass emoji meme making me cringe and cry of laughter both at the same time?
saw them live and they sounded clearer than the record, I think alot of it has to do with how good the songwriting/arrangement is on Deciever
DIIV have really grown into their sound and the latest album is excellent. Love this band :)
Zach looking more and more like Private Joker from Full Metal Jacket
So true lmao
Perfect background music to stay in bed al day
My last concert ever was this band. one of the best experiences i have ever had. a memory i will have forever!
deceiver is they're best so far
Maybe that's what the critics think but listener numbers say otherwise.
Andrew Mastrantoni yeah that’s what they said about Justin Belieber but look at him now?
Oshin will always be the best in my heart
@@jaredm8351 i love oshin too, but this album sound more grown-up and expensive lol 😂😂
@@satanholes I think so too, this album sounds really unique and dynamic compared to their older stuff, I wish more people could know them!!
they are so professional... I am so happy music like this exists, its so non-template
Nearly 1m views in a week, long live DIIV
2.5 mil as of today! Crazy.
Ben Newman on the drums is mad tight!!!!!!
I think both Ben and Colin have really shone from this new record - Cole and Andrew have too, but their new music has given Colin more of a role in the writing, and as Ben said in the documentary, he's happy that the music has gotten heavier...
This is their best record by far.
5:26
lol
Literally had to stop and listen to the whooole thing. Amazing!!
“yeah you all have to wear vans”
free vans sounds like a good deal to me
AZUWAN
Yeah, getting to promote your album to more than two million people and walk out w a new pair of kicks sounds like a hell of a deal.
My favorite ryt now. Can’t get over the drop. SO LIT 🔥
keep these coming Vans 🔥🔥🔥
Whoever is behind the sound desk deserves a raise.
Nailed it. Would purchase a live record mixed like this.
Zach reminds me the protagonist of full metal jacket
blankenship is one of the best tracks i ever dun did heard
hell yeah
For real, when I heard that track live the entire atmosphere of the venue changed and everyone went mental, absolutely unreal
floatingspacebar lucky bastard
Its like a dream come true
Thank you Vans and thank you DIIV
Saw these guys back in 2019 in a small hall, the crescendos from the chill verses melting into powerful choruses shook the street
this band is the best
Just saw them in Köpenhamn before quarantine, damn i feel so lucky. One of the best shows ive been to :)
it’s interesting Andrew is by far the coolest member of the band now.
so glad I saw them live in October 2019 before.... you know
The perfect rainy London driving music.

I always hate that all the other videos of Diiv on here, it's so hard to hear the vocals. Never understand why they're not louder. Sounds so good here.
Sounds really good!
I really hope this pandemic slows down in europe because i would be seeing them in the summer. Fingers crossed

いやーー、最高
Does anyone recognize the tom mics?
I love DIIV
I just got an ad between videos on RUclips, and somehow I've been listening to this band for like the next 2 hours. where does Vans do live music nowadays? I used to go to warped tour all the time back in the day, that fell off the radar, and now I find myself wondering where the hell all these bands play live. LA based. Let's connect!
Hell of a mini show
Wah wah wah wah
великолепно
diosss los AMO
Yo tambien amigo. Yo mire diiv en vivo en Las Vegas y suenan lo mismo en vivo, no, mas MEJOR. Ese concierto era el ultimo que mire cuando COVID paso. COVID ruino todooo.
DIIV is the most looking Vans band ever
increíble
5:26 POSSESSED!
Maybe the cameraman was bugging him?
Bring Diiv again !!
Are they using alternative tunings?
Yeah instead of E standard they use the lowest note from the drums to harmonize so in this case it would be Z H T P L Q as opposed to EADGBe
Oh! I'm familiar with that method.
Last time I tried it was with this post-punk band I auditioned for once. It's actually pretty simple. Of the kick is 22" then you need .11s but of it's 20" you should be fine with .10s. Just make sure the gauges are correct, then you tune them accordingly to the drums, as you said and then finally you shove it up your butt
Luiz Spindola yeah my bad I left that part out. Also use loads of auto tune on the vocals instead of reverb or delay and add triplet hi hats on every bar to hold time don’t forget!!
the only band with a fender cyclone
3:58 this blows my mind every time
Someone knows wich is the tunning of guitars?
Can be played in standard or drop d
🎶🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎶🎶🎶
get Chastity on this
