I've had a pair of Irish Setter Marshall's and a pair of Flexforce 11" and have been completely won over by their brands. I remember my grandfather had a pair for nearly 50 years and my father had a pair for around 25 years. They both wore them at least 5 days per week working. My father was a tool & die man for several companies, and my grandfather worked for Southwestern Bell. I remember that they would use them on all of our hunting and fishing trips as well. What memories!
Redwing makes these Moc Toe boots with the vibram lug. They call that version the roughneck. It’s built on the same no. 23 last. As you mention, the softer sole has its place. If you stand on concrete floors all day instead of walking in soft terrain, you’d prefer the Christy sole. Thanks for the long term review!
The Lugz do make the boot look nice and mean though! I would recommend if you do go for lugs, try to find a good comfortable insole you can put inside, it will be much better to wear on long days
I have the same model Moc toe, though only 1yr in. So the original sole still going ok, they are great boots. I have to admit the lug sole you have had put on yours appeals. I may go the same way when the time comes. I'm enjoying your vids, always good info. Though sometimes my wallet would not agree. Quick edit, break in was tougher on these than my other Redwings, they literally drew blood at the start.. now soft supple and really comfy.
you should bring them back to stock life and put a white wedge back on them! would love a new video on these. You were my inspiration to get these back in the day when you got them.
Great video. That's so peculiar how these boots break in differently for different people. The 875s gave me abolutely no issue but the 1907s were a major problem and gave me some nastty blisters.
Loved that comparison video you did a year ago. They’re still holding up really well. With you putting that lug outsole that gave me an idea. I wonder how these would look with a leather outsole. Maybe some JR outsoles. That be a pretty cool experiment to dress them up.
Got mine in november 2015 Subs to you in dec 2015 Nice to hear this is your go to boot Mine is superb, has more scratches but still hold up great Got a 8828 billy boots last april to accomoany my 875
Ahh , you've joined in Moc'tober :-) , got to disagree about the sizing tho' , got two UK Redwings also size 8 , had to go down half size also didn't need any break in , comfortable out of the box. Another good review.
Same for me with regards size. UK8 too big, UK7 too narrow, UK7.5 comfortable out of the box, but still a little too long. Only worn a couple of times though so not yet broken in. 😬
@@DevonReviewer Hi thanks for the reply, actually my foot is far from narrow, I just find Redwings in general to long , Rose Anvil who you mention has done a whole video on sizing and his conclusion was , go down one full size in EE wide or half size in normal width .
Great video. I'm curious to know if you had any issues with heel slippage at the break in? I sized down but find them generous in size. They are fine with an insole and thicker socks but I do get some heel slippage. I wondered if this will go away with more wear?
I think heel slip is about getting the boots on reasonable tight and stopping that movement. Often the bellows tongue is the issue so focus on getting that broken in and nice and soft, to get the rest of the boot to fit nicely... and yes it should go away!
No, it doesnt get better. The sizing us terrible. I was "fitted for size" in the London redwing Store, went down a half size. Still loose. I regret buying these shoes, not cheap so im really pissed.
I'd asked for this in a previous post and hey presto. I'm getting new white vibrams on my redwing from a local cobbler arm. What about a resole of your grensons?
Hello Devon.. thumbs up for the good review. Do you experience some indigo transfer into the boot especially marks on upper heel and eyelet area (4 or 5 from bottom). This is not the patina that i wanted where the bottom cuff of my jeans got contact with the boot. Any idea how can i get rid of the indigo marks? Most of my jeans are Samurai (unsanforize) and Iron Heart one wash. i owned 875 and 1907, both are new pairs having same indigo marks.
Any insights on why the 875s dont come with a shank? And if I decide to add a Vibram sole during a resole, is it standard practice for them to add a shank in there? Love your vids!
They don’t have a shank because they have no heel drop so there is no need. If you get them resoled at red Wing with a heeled sole then they’ll put in a shank for you. Triple ribbed steel shank.
I didn’t think I’d like that oro legacy leather but after getting the 877s it’s probably one of my favorite leathers. Also you don’t really need to use gloves to condition them because Armstrong uses all natural materials that aren’t harmful.
Yes you are quite right, I think you could eat the stuff if you were so inclined... I have picked up the habit from applying boot polish, which isnt quite as friendly!
Lol I have a pair and all I see is my fat foot hanging off the edge a far bit, I was too excited to purchase them and was worried about the wrong things did my research all wrong but I’m going to wear them more now to really make them my own
Absolutely I think half a size down and EE might be a good fit in these for me. I may try sourcing some japanese heritage boots to try it out, they seem to get some fairly exclusive models!
I agreed, i when down half size, but what i really should have gone down Full size but got wider version. Redwing are not worth buying because of there unpredictable sizing system. Bad.

With the vibram lug on these they remind me of a 1960's redwing Irish setter hunting boot.
The boots looks absolutely great. I’m waiting for my first Moc Toe boots
The Lugz do make the boot look nice and mean though! I would recommend if you do go for lugs, try to find a good comfortable insole you can put inside, it will be much better to wear on long days
Yes an insole would help with fatigue but I found these pretty snug fitting and took a lot to break in, so could only use a very thin insole!

You can get EE wide width 875’s in the UK. You can get them from the Red Wing Store in London just of Carnaby Street.
I wonder how these would look with a mini lug sole. Considering sending mine in to get resoled, not a big fan of the stock cristy sole.
They look great with roccia half soles.

Have you tried Bickmore’s Bick-4 Leather Conditioner? Its one of the only conditioners I’ve found that won’t change the color of the leather.
That is interesting, do you normally find you have a narrow foot? The width is the limiting factor for me.
People have recommended Bick 4 over the years, still havent tried it out.. probably too late for the 875s!
