This is a BRILLIANT video Ana and very informative :-D we have had a wonderful few weeks of very sunny weather, and although our temperatures are cool compared to Las Vegas the direct sunshine can still burn our plants in Ireland we have in the yard as our yard is very sheltered and gets very hot on the sunny days, our polytunnel reached 98F on Thursday, even though it was 75F outside, all your plants are looking amazing and the shade cloths are fantastic to protect them, you have a fantastic collection, WOW at the 9% humidity, thanks so much Ana for sharing, and sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a sunny Saturday ahead XXXX
When I watch your videos and I see your humidity levels at 80%, I am wishing I can get at least half of your humidity over here. Hahaha. My biggest challenge here is the hot and dry air which turns every plant into prunes. 🥵 But I’d take this weather anytime over snow. 😉 Thanks Lyn and I wish you a sunny and warm months ahead. CHEERS! 😃🌵☕️
I just took a wire basket that are used with coco liners, anyway i took shade cloth and sewed it around the rim of basket with fishing line to pit over a few of my cactus planted in ground, it works out perfectly
Thank you for recommending this video again. It's always good to review your videos, especially since I've moved to Nevada. It's so different from California where I left my succulents and cacti outside in the sun year round.
Oh welcome to the hot desert! Other desert areas are dry but not hot. Here it’s the real deal. Lol! This year is one of the worst heat I’ve experienced so far. Good thing we got good rain late winter. It gave the cacti an early head start to grow and flower before the extreme heat started. Hang in there! 😥
Your cacti are doing much better in this very early heat than I am. This is the season when I begin my hibernation until it cools down the week before Halloween. Thanks for showing your very nice collection.
Joan Clarke hahaha. I hate this time of the year in Vegas. I usually go grocery shopping at night. Yes, summer temperature came in way too early. I hope it rains every now and then.
That Rebutia is an explosion of outrageousness!!!! What a show indeed!!! Very impressive!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks ,Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌺🌴🌸🌿🌻
I got lucky on the flowering of that rebutia this year. It must have gotten a very good winter rest. Thanks Clyde and cheers from sunny and hot Vegas! 😃☕️🌵☀️
Wow,Anna you always “hit the spot”with us newbies. Was wondering as this is my first year, how to go around this scorching heatwave we had in Cali in the last 4 days. With the myth that cactus are desert plants, the cactus we get are born in the greenhouse,so they are different from those wild cactus that thrives in very hot weather.Thank you for mentioning about flowering ones, take it out from hot sun, very informative.Again, you are an awesome blogger and always looking forward for your new videos..Love from Cali😘
Thank you. Yes, this heat is sometimes too much for the cactus. In the wild, many of them grow partially shaded by grass or rocks. They can go long without water but the scorching sun can burn them.
You've done a great job of protecting your cacti from the hot sun. I also have an East facing balcony, but my patio umbrella helps with that Summer morning sun. Stay cool!
Gee Carmen. I know Arizona gets hotter than Vegas. Your weather is a big challenge, too. Stay cool and hydrated! Cheers from Las Vegas to Arizona! 🙂☕️☕️😃
Cactus Haven, well they are trying to survive right now. Summer heat came too early this year. 🥵 I don’t think my epiphytes can last any longer outside, though. They are shriveling fast.
Hi Ana! I wanted to watch your video earlier when I woke up at 6.30am but I had to do my chores first so only had the time now. So much shade protection!!! I'm sure your husband had a big hand in putting them all up 👍👍😊😊. I too am afraid if my cacti have burns or any other markings because it'll be there forever. I love all your cacti arrangements on the racks, pots and even your desert garden. Everything looks perfect 👍👏 and you've housed them so well. They're all living in a 5 star hotel with a good director in charge. 😍😍😍☺️☺️
Molly Cher 5 star hotel?! Hahaha. Not quite yet. Yes, my husband put up all the shade cloths. He even dug and cemented a 10-foot pole in the middle of our yard to anchor the shade sails. He did a fantastic job. The heat here is so intense. Even if you are under a shade, the air that is blowing is hot like in an oven. Shade cloths are definitely a must or I will end up with toasted cacti. 😁
I really like the intermission of the full bloom. Cool idea! Burn scars on the plants if it gets too hot? It doesn't grow the scar out? Full view with ads ALWAYS. Been missing ya trying to get around!!🌵🍺☕🌵 Cool information Ana! Have a great day!!🌹
That was the best intermission EVER! I have a rebutia this year because of the blooms you had last year! I hope mine will bloom like that someday but it's a bit small right now. Thanks for another great video!
Hi Ana! Gud day from the Philippines😊. Thnk u for sharing your vry beautiful collections & tips on how to you take care of your furry babies. Keep safe & God bless🙏🏻💕
Fantastic video Ana, definitely important to use shade cloth in those conditions, I use it in the greenhouse. Loved the super bloom intermission, absolutely stunning 😍🌺 Thank you for sharing another informative video with us Ana, from Edith & myself, have a wonderful day and weekend 🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜☕️
I can only imagine how hot it can get there! The humidity there is so low. Not very good for the human skin. Nakakatanda ang dryness, sis. 😱😂 thank goodness for shade cloth. 😂 i am worried about the epiphytic cacti though. I agree with you, they really have to be brought in to protect them. I water my flowering/pupping cacti more frequently because the plants use so much moisture when they are exerting effort. Loved the intermission! Lovely flowers, as always. Thanks for sharing, sis. ❤️🌵🌸🌼🌺🥰❤️
Cactus Caffeine yes. You can supplement the humidity by placing them on a tray with water and pebbles but make sure that the roots are not sitting directly in water. When the water evaporates, that will add a bit of moisture in the air or you can use a humidifier to give these plants a better chance of surviving the summer. 🥰
Some cacti need sun though to fully open. Right now since our weather is very hot here, even areas under a shade gets very bright sun that the I have no problem making them open. But too much heat + sun burns the petals so I place them under shade.
I see how you use different levels of shade cloth to protect your cactus. I use a covered patio with two layers of 6 mil plastic, tree covered area and areas of full sunlight in different parts of my backyard. I live in Los Angeles near the ocean and the temperature is rarely over 85F and humidity is normally around 40 to 50 percent. There are many cactus that need more heat and colder temperatures and some will survive but, most will not. I grow my wife's orchids next to succulents and cactus and they are an odd combination.
@@CactusCaffeine I found out that my area is not hot enough for many desert cactus but, I can grow many cactus with very little care or watering because I live near the beach and get moisture from the ocean. I think it is funny to see orchids growing next to desert plants especially when both plants are in bloom.
I use a soil mix straight out of a bag and just make adjustments to it as needed. I use any cactus fertilizer sold in the market for growth and tomato fertilizer for flowering.
Thank you for this info! I’m hitting 110-116 this week and I couldn’t find any info on 90% shade cloth. I’m worried my succs & cacti will begin to etiolate under its protection. They will only be under it for about 3 months. Do you think they’ll be ok under 90%?
Hi... good morning Ana ...at exactly 8:42 in your video where you are showing your succulents... in the big clay pot I was wondering what those succulents are called?? Can anyone help me? I got some of them for a neighbor and he didn't know what they were called....sorry to trouble anyone.... thanks in advance for any help😉
Oh I loved this episode. Very nice and scientific. I also loved the perspectives and seeing where everything is in your yard. Ha, and I liked the bird on the fence and in the tree. What a great collection you have. Oh you have one of those rainbow hedgehogs. I love those. It is very hot here in FL and I burned two of my new cactuses. I was so upset. They are inside the house recovering and now I'm afraid to put them back out. And one was so pretty but it is forever cooked now. It recovered but now it's ugly. It will be a breeder. Love your desert garden. What is the tall one with lots of big puts on the far left of that garden?
Scary Fear The one in my desert garden is a trichocereus grandiflora. I’m sorry about your sun burned cactus. That is a bummer. You really have a soft spot for birds. You noticed them in the video even though they appeared very briefly and they were so far. 😃
@@CactusCaffeine Thanks for telling me. I will have to look for one of those now. Well the good news is I used the burned cactus's pollen so hope that will work. Oh yes, I have been a bird lover forever. My eyes are instinctively drawn to them and attune to their movements.
@@CactusCaffeine I found a Trichocereus grandiflora at Lowes today! Chris bought it for me. It's kind of big. I'm so happy. It has fruits I think and possibly new or old flowers. Not sure. Has two pups. I'm very happy but don't know much about it. I just like how big they are without being too big.
I’m considering what shade cloth to get. My temps aren’t as high as yours. Zone 7. I was considering 40% but I’m also thinking I can get away with 65%. And that would be more comfortable for me - this will be on the pergola of my back deck where I keep most of my succulents. If I go with the 65 will that be too much for my plants? They seem mostly happy in full sun except for some sunburn in the spring. But I’m hoping to make my deck a little more comfortable for me too. Now that I have a pergola! Also how much does color matter?
Honestly, for me the color is only for aesthetics. But the sun protection that they give is the same as what is indicated on its label. Sounds like even just 50% shade will work for your plants especially if they only get morning sun. 🙂
I do but they are under a tree that don’t bear fruits. It is beside a fig tree that attracts most of the birds. My bigger problem is leaves falling on my cactus that I have to constantly clean.
I’m here in Cincinnati Ohio, rain and more rain! It gets cool and then it gets hot . Cincinnati Ohio doesn’t know what it wants to be . All seasons in one. Lol
How can u tell if you’re cactus has a sun burn or if its just dying/rotting . I have some damage to a cactus of mine not really sure what happened and I can’t tell if it’s okay or not

My epiphytes are now mostly inside my kitchen. They are shriveling fast despite being watered. The hot air just sucks up all the water in the leaves.
Cactus Caffeine oh noooo!😞 humidifier or tray of water with pebbles?
