Cut 70% of the middle management, and they're still working as it is. Increasing 20% non managerial staff will increase the productivity. Too many managers in the government
@freespeechmatters583 If the person in charge of an office allows their juniors to drag their feet they can cry that they need more juniors to get the job done, the office is then a bigger entity and they need a more senior officer to be in charge of more people and because the person in charge before the staffing explosion is the one who knows the job inside out, they will be the one who gets the promotion.
When you've waited 50 minutes to get through on their phone wait and then you get someone who's no help, obstructive and a little patronising, its a joke. Four days a week? I call bullshit.
I have several former colleagues that took early retirement and went to work for various parts of local/national government all said the same thing, its like a holiday camp with people sat around chatting all day.
Get rid of sick pay for civil servants - they should only get statutory sick pay which is £116.75 per week. This would soon stop most of these people taking time off.
I thought Civil Servants were already on a 3 day week judging from the level of service we receive. So it must mean they want to increase their hours! 😂😂😂😂😂
Started in the RAF, went on to the Fire Brigade.....then came the Civil Service, Job Centre. Rather have gone to hell. Nightmare. After uniformed jobs it was so badly run and sooo PC.
So, the obvious answer, very low basic pay, then they have incentive payments for completing work. That might incentivise them. I bet they’d work harder then. I talk as a self-employed individual, no work no pay, no paid holidays. Funny how many hours I put in!
A lot of people work a four day week working LONGER daily hours over the four days worked that equals the total hours previously worked over the five days. Extra day off yes but not less hours actually worked in that week.
It's a strange thing that stress seems to be more prevalent than it was when I was working between 60 and 84 hour's a week.. most of us doing it were totally fine those that weren't found something else......
Given the inability of the civil service and its constant failures I have no issue with a 20% pay cut which could be used to employ those who are able !
Your never get the phones answered in HMRC then. Very hard now waiting an hour to get it answered then another hour them putting you on hold to find things out.where exactly are they working from
4 day working week then you get paid for four days and that’s it . If you suffer from stress you will still suffer if you have a 4 day week or 3 day week ect
Fine, reduce to 4 days but there must be a 20% paycut. If they argue that they can do the same work in 4 days as 5, then they aren't working hard enough (which we already know). Civil service and public sector workers have no clue. Try working in the private sector and you will see what working for a living is really about!
Time to bring in a Elon musk type character businessman to run these public job clubs !! Four day week in my book means we don’t need at least 20% of their work force as it stands just now .
£320,000 savings on a budget of £86.36 million. This is just noise. Cancel something here. Wait to do that until next year and you have saved £4 million. The fact that they couldn't show a better figure proves they made a big mistake with this 4 day week move.
What about shop workers, restaurant workers, truck drivers, delivery drivers, bus drivers, train drivers, school teachers, and ither jobs that can not work from home they can just do five days whilst others can do four. What happened to equality that the government rave about?
UK needs MOGE, Ministry of Government Efficiency. You don't need 1:2.5 manager to staff ratio. That's ridiculous. In the private sector, 1:5 is already too many. You need actual people doing actual service, not paper pushers.
They turn up for 5 days, sometimes, but only do 3 days work now!!! and thats in a good week...It might work in the private sector where they are assessed and rewarded for productivity ..
The huge rise in "stress" etc is entirely due to the fact that these civil servants still get paid when they have months and months off work. Stop the pay and we will see everyone get back to work.
If they can do their work over 4 days.....why is the council not cutting the staff by 20 percent. Additionally when there is cover required for long term sickness and holidays, will they be paid overtime for working a 5 day week, which they were contracted to do....at, I assume, the increased hourly rate they are now being paid. What a joke !!! Have you tried to make contact with someone from the council.....if you manage to get your call answered....and they can hear you over the sound of their child crying.....you will usually get cut off.....this country is a joke.
In a previous job i had, people worked a 4 day a week and a 5 day a week. The 4 day workers, worked 4 ten hour shifts and the 5 day workers, worked 5 eight hour shifts. If they want to work 4 days a week then make them work 2 hours extra each day
This 4 day week only works for certain jobs, like office jobs but retail, hospitality, emergency staff, distribution and many more jobs can not be closed for 3 days or take on extra staff to cover the days that other staff are off work, so costing more in wages etc. This is ridiculous if you only want to work 4 days a week you should only get paid for 4 days a week or work the 5 to get your full pay
They're already incredibly inefficient now, for goodness sake! Oh and btw the hmrc is hiring 5000 new staff after spending millions of pounds in the last few years in AI to track down pur tax returns. What the hell are they going to do then??? Oh yes, give the government an excuse to take our money and waste it
They should work 7 days a week, with no lunch breaks. It gets me so angry that people think they have a right to work only 4 days a week! Plus, they should only be straight, no gays or lady-boys. Just men and women. Seven days a week with reduced holidays. These people need to learn. Make an example of them.
you know people all over the world, living in communist, capitalist, or socialist, call this a bull anyone who has to deal with government transactions call it the biggest BS of modern BS😂😂😂
A working contract is 37 hrs a week. Monday's is the most busy when you might be trapped in the office 10-11 hrs. As every call center the most hours you pass when it's the busiest and you end at least a day on the week doing nothing. Your contract is 37 hours a week so you get paid hourly. If you do your job in 2 days working 20 hours a week you done your job because are things to do that needs to be done and dealt with. So what's the problem? Is anyone that got the next meeting at the Job Sender?
Not sure I will notice the difference to be honest. These are two common experiences that I encounter when dealing with government departments - I think caused by excessive part time contracts and home working. 1) After an excessive wait on the telephone I am told that the person that can deal with my query isn’t in today and could I try again tomorrow 2) A government officer telephones me wanting something, I apologise saying that I am at work in a meeting and ask if I can call them back. And I am told “sorry, I am working from home and I’m not allowed to give you my private home number”. The irony is that they have called me on my private mobile telephone number. I’m afraid that government (local and central) departments have become so broken and dysfunctional, that the service is now sow poor, I don’t think we will be able to tell the difference between a 5 day a week poor service and a 4 day a week poor service.
Yes, their calling to actually work 4 full days a week is very good of them! Well done and thanks for pulling up your socks after all these years! 😂... As opposed to now where long coffee breaks, endless pointless meetings and 'brainstorming' sessions, combined with (not) working from home often and long lunch breaks means they are probably only doing about 16 hrs a week of actual productive work right now - if that. Here speaks a private sector corporate veteran, where although working harder than those in the public sector is a necessary requirement to survive redundancy, even then only about 3.5 out of every 5 days is actual work in my experience - and 12 hours a week are wasted on the above follies. So you can imagine how unproductive the lazy public sector is!
Civil servants stressed, really? 4 day week for over 55's maybe but it has to be pro-ratad. For the others 4 days work for 5 days pay is taking the pish.
I now work part time by choice. My pay is for exactly the hours I work. As it should be. All my colleagues get paid according to their contractural hours. As it should be.
This always makes me laugh when people don't understand that well rested people with a good work life balance are significantly more productive than average. People also don't understand why marathon runners don't keep up the same pace as sprinters.
Im still waiting for a dwp reply for 9 months! Your given 6-8 weeks to fill it in, but all ive recd so far is every three months a text saying we have the form please dont ring us! I miss the deadline my benefit gets stopped!
If they want to do 4 days work thats fine by me, what annoys me is they want 5 days worth of pay, it should be no you lose a day you lose a days wage and earn 4 days worth of wages instead so take a deduction in your wages, which no one will do.
clearly a 20% reduction in staff is an obvious conclusion
They aren't doing their job in 5 days, for goodness sake.
This probably means we can make do with 20% less civil servants.
mostly managers
50%
This gets my vote...given in most other walks of life folk have to do more for less, a cosseted bunch who are out of touch with the real world.
Cut 70% of the middle management, and they're still working as it is. Increasing 20% non managerial staff will increase the productivity. Too many managers in the government
@freespeechmatters583

I call for them to be sacked! 😡😡😡
When you've waited 50 minutes to get through on their phone wait and then you get someone who's no help, obstructive and a little patronising, its a joke. Four days a week? I call bullshit.
100%
Try getting them to work.
I have several former colleagues that took early retirement and went to work for various parts of local/national government all said the same thing, its like a holiday camp with people sat around chatting all day.
This is why the country is going down the pan
Public sector gravy train continues.
I work 7 days a week but I’d be stressed if I had no work at all , I’m sick of this lazy woke nonsense
When have They Ever done a full day's work.Everything is falling apart and nothing works. What they need is a AUDIT.and restructure.
Get Elon on the job as he will sort it.
Civil servants over paid and under achievers
5 days or sack
Plenty of people looking for work who would be really happy to work 5 days.
I'd rather we all had 4 days with a 3 day weekend. Business that need to be open Monday-Friday can stagger staff.
I’ve worked my life on Drilling Rigs. Can I have a chopper to fly me off please
Were you forced to work on oil rigs ?
@@sarahann530 were loovt tyts forced to work in cs nope
@@DC3Refom Did you raid the medicine cabinet again ?

4 x 10 hour shifts is a four day week
exactly
I thought Civil Servants were already on a 3 day week judging from the level of service we receive. So it must mean they want to increase their hours! 😂😂😂😂😂
Which is fine just not their pay.
This is total nonsense. What they mean is that they want an easier life than they already have and make the country an even worse mess.
Four days more than they work now.
Started in the RAF, went on to the Fire Brigade.....then came the Civil Service, Job Centre. Rather have gone to hell. Nightmare. After uniformed jobs it was so badly run and sooo PC.
making the civil service more wfficient would save £21BILLION...lets try that instead... 😜
Thats a start
So, the obvious answer, very low basic pay, then they have incentive payments for completing work. That might incentivise them. I bet they’d work harder then. I talk as a self-employed individual, no work no pay, no paid holidays. Funny how many hours I put in!
Talking about pointless; A remote working consultant??!! WTF!!
They want a 4 day week? I'm surprised they want to work more than they do now.
A lot of people work a four day week working LONGER daily hours over the four days worked that equals the total hours previously worked over the five days. Extra day off yes but not less hours actually worked in that week.

Very hard now waiting an hour to get it answered then another hour them putting you on hold to find things out.where exactly are they working from
Correct ,I have been there
They are on a four day week now by working at home.
4 day working week then you get paid for four days and that’s it . If you suffer from stress you will still suffer if you have a 4 day week or 3 day week ect

Civil service and public sector workers have no clue. Try working in the private sector and you will see what working for a living is really about!
So let them get paid for a 4 day week too then, no bother!
Taxes will go down, win win😉 Do any of them actually go out to work or are they at home all the time?
50% less staff required then, because they arent even doing their jobs properly.
Time to bring in a Elon musk type character businessman to run these public job clubs !! Four day week in my book means we don’t need at least 20% of their work force as it stands just now .
5 days of doing nothing is just to mich for anyone
Well said about some people working 7 days a week, now labour have increased the size of the state,so more hangers on pushing paper achieving nothing
So effectively its civil servants getting a 20% pay rise. And who will do their work o their day off?
Most don't even work 4 days now. Work from Home (watching Netflix).
Greed just greed!
Was thinking a 3 day week and pay them for 3 days only. Reduce staff levels accordingly.. We will all feel the benefit.
£320,000 savings on a budget of £86.36 million. This is just noise. Cancel something here. Wait to do that until next year and you have saved £4 million. The fact that they couldn't show a better figure proves they made a big mistake with this 4 day week move.
What would save government a fortune would be if civil servants paid for their pension.
"Burned out"? We used to call that not being able to "hack it". Demote them to a job they can cope with.
What about shop workers, restaurant workers, truck drivers, delivery drivers, bus drivers, train drivers, school teachers, and ither jobs that can not work from home they can just do five days whilst others can do four. What happened to equality that the government rave about?
Only got the MPs. Catch on to the way of thing.s
UK needs MOGE, Ministry of Government Efficiency. You don't need 1:2.5 manager to staff ratio. That's ridiculous. In the private sector, 1:5 is already too many. You need actual people doing actual service, not paper pushers.

Most of them don't work Fridays anyway, have you ever tried to get hold of someone from the council on a Friday?
This is simple give them a 4 day week. Then when there is no improvement in service, FIRE 20% and put the rest back on a 5 day week!
All I am hearing here is BS….
The huge rise in "stress" etc is entirely due to the fact that these civil servants still get paid when they have months and months off work. Stop the pay and we will see everyone get back to work.
If you are stressed at work, you are in the wrong job.
Four-day week for civil servants is fine but I want a 20% reduction in my council tax and the servants to have a 20% pay cut.
Bring on artificial intelligence and save the tax payer an awful lot of money.
They could save about fifty times that amount if the staff at the Home Office just did the jobs they were put there to do!!!!
If the whole place can do 5 days work in 4 days they are over staffed.
Any suggestion of a 4 day week is accompanied by the notion that you do your full time hours over 4 days rather than 5.
I notice its always office workers never hear of electicians, or plumbers, firemen, police, !!!
Just think of the savings you could make if you put them all on a ZERO hours deal!
Asking for 4 day week, that's a first, someone asking to work more hours
Only if we get in the private sector.
Glad to see lazy is Universal not just here in the US
If they can do their work over 4 days.....why is the council not cutting the staff by 20 percent.

Work longer hours Monday-Thursday to pick up Fridays hours is the most logical solution ?
It was a 6 day week until ford thought people need a day off to enjoy their motor
In a previous job i had, people worked a 4 day a week and a 5 day a week. The 4 day workers, worked 4 ten hour shifts and the 5 day workers, worked 5 eight hour shifts. If they want to work 4 days a week then make them work 2 hours extra each day
Useless people cost less working for 4 days than 5 ...shocker
Bull. They want like the MPs good money. No work.
This 4 day week only works for certain jobs, like office jobs but retail, hospitality, emergency staff, distribution and many more jobs can not be closed for 3 days or take on extra staff to cover the days that other staff are off work, so costing more in wages etc.

Four days pay for four days work.

I had back ache and was stressed BUT still went to work!
Nothing wrong with a 4 day week. There is a lot wrong with work 4 days and get paid for 5, that is the definition of "something for nothing".
4 days work for 4 days pay…that’ll work
A working contract is 37 hrs a week. Monday's is the most busy when you might be trapped in the office 10-11 hrs. As every call center the most hours you pass when it's the busiest and you end at least a day on the week doing nothing. Your contract is 37 hours a week so you get paid hourly.

Let them have their 4 day week and pay them accordingley .

Some won’t like the increase if they are expected to work 4 days a week
They do little enough 'work' (spelt shirk), as is ffs !
that should be extended everywhere.
This always makes me laugh when people don't understand that well rested people with a good work life balance are significantly more productive than average. People also don't understand why marathon runners don't keep up the same pace as sprinters.
To be fair they are less dangerous to the country staying at home and not working
they dont do a days work what a burden on the tax payer
I mean, I would work a extra 2 hours over the 4 days to take of the extra day off but to work 4 days for a pay cut? I would rather work the 5.
Since when has/science been important.?
4 day week 😂😂 that’s an extra 2 for the majority of them.
How do you get better productively in education. Julie please explain.. another Oxbridge degree in zero a waste of time
