I am just finding you today, and reading this chapter for the first time. I am really enjoying your commentary in its short and concise explanations.
Comments:
1. For contextual purposes: Numbers Chapt 4v46 says that there were 8,580 Levite men between 30 and 50 years old - and we could guess that the total number of Levites might have been over 30,000 - all of whom were supported by the other 11 tribes' offerings !?! (Would this be a correct interpretation?)
2. The house of Aaron and his sons were the chief priests. I would interpret that to mean in todays language, they would have been the slayers/butchers at the altar. The other Levites were the caretakers of the area inside the outer tent.
So it is difficult to envision the quantity of sacrifices they must have done each day. The Jews numbered over a half million people (603,550 by the census, plus the 30,000 Levites) at this time; that is a large city.
Imagine the line of people trying to find/purchase and then get their animals sacrificed, and the Levites trying to contain the horde of people and animals. Then imagine how much blood and animal parts had to be handled daily (no refrigeration) by the Levites just to keep the process going. After all, they used part/all of these offerings to feed the 30,000 Levites daily.
3. Then there were the financial tithes that the 11 tribes had to contribute to sustain the Levite tribe who could not live on slaughtered sacrifices alone. They too needed to make purchases and secure shelter, clothing, etc while out in the desert.
Very interesting to envision how this whole metropolis worked 3500 years ago, without all of the modern conveniences of today.
