Just another entry to add to the never ending bike lotto win list. BMW have said if i ordered now it won't be available until October. The wife says if I order one now she won't be here in October win win lol
"if you can live with the looks". Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me the s1000xr looks much prettier than the GS. Much more modern and sportier. The only drawback i see is the absents of a drive shaft but it gives you so much more in return.
I agree because I look at this bike even 4 years later and can't think of a prettier bike on the market.... funny how people see thing so differently, lol
Great and very honest review, thanks for that.. I bought one 2 weeks ago and i'm loving it. I don't mind the looks as it lulls people into a false sense of security until you gun it and leave them in your wake. The handling is sublime and so very different to my K1300S that I absolutely loved, as I had the 12 and 13 since 2006.Its not as good on fuel as I would have hoped, as managed to get 200mpt on the K1300S might getter better as it loosens up, but its fast capable and fun and that is all that matters. Cant wait for the first service to get it fully unleashed.
Excellent review buddy! Like you I am not a fan of the looks and this is such an important element for me. I'll keep the Speed Triple thank you. Beautiful bike and throw some soft panniers over it - just as versatile! Quick non related question: just bought an EJK fuel controller for the CRF. Worth fitting? Do they make much difference? Thanks!
The Crumble Hi mate - glad you concur with my views on the looks - thought I might be missing something but it seems BMW really struggle to come up with classy looking machines. I can just about get on with the GS, and love the R Nine T - but other than that, not sure what their designers are thinking. Shame, 'cos on paper and in the saddle they make great bikes. On the EJK front I haven't found it's made much difference, but assume it is looking after my engine for me (given it comes pre-loaded with a map for the exhaust mods by default and is - I assume - keeping the mixture right). I know some owners have played with the mappings, I've left mine as stock for now, I dare say you could get more poke from the bike by playing with these. If you do, please let me know! All the best - TMF.
Hi TMF, I test rode the xr last week and I couldn't agree more with you. The bike felt a bit too buzzy for my liking. The vibrations are definitely there but aren't too bad. It wouldn't put me off. It's a great bike but the 1200gs feels a lot more relaxed to ride. It's just the better touring bike. The design of the xr doesn't help either. I wouldn't call it ugly but, ah, it's ugly, who am I kidding. Quit your job and focus on reviewing bikes.
juefis ....that would be nice Juefis!! ...and agree, the GS is a great bike with very little not to like except maybe the "characterful" boxer and the odd looks - neither are major detractors for me. On the XR the fugliness, vibes and long stretch clutch are enough to make me stick with the GS. I did like the XR engine and it's light handling though, definitely a very good machine if you're in the market for a hot ship....cheers for your kind comments - all the best - TMF
Great review, I love mine, the clutch and vibration were my only bug bears, I love the look but then again I was raised on Warner brothers cartoons ;), thats all folks.
Hi Mark - you're a lucky man to like the looks because it's a fabulous machine! Congratulations and ride carefully on that beast. Thanks for watching and commenting, all the best - TMF
Mark I will have to agree with you for I find this motorcycle to be absolutely beautiful. The ugliest motorcycle line up has to be Ducati (but that is a personal observation). The biggest failure on this machine is the windscreen - it's sort of like tit's on a boar hog, its there but it is absolutely useless. Congratulations on having this beautiful motorcycle.
Thanks for vid Steve, just picked up my red XR a few days ago and agree with the your comments about scaffolding and mudguard bit, have removed both for now. Amazing bike to ride around the twisty roads of Cornwall and I love the cruise control and the quick shiftier. I also agree with your the point about the vibrations through the hand bars, luckily it has cruise control, so you can take your hands off the bars when needed. I actually like the look of this bike, although would have prefer it in black, maybe there will be a black one along in the future hey. My XR is my only bike at present and it seems to do everything fair well, my wife made me sale my others due to the cost of the XR. Thanks again for your honesty and in-depth review.
Paul Fowler Thanks Paul (who's Steve by the way?? ;0) It is undoubtedly a great bike, well done for getting on with the looks of it - I wish I did, I'd definitely have one once my GS expires if they gave it a revamp in the looks department. It certainly seems an excellent all rounder and very comfortable....strange about the vibes though, you'd expect them on a twin (I don't get them on my GS by the way)...but a 4 cylinder should be smooth as butter. Small point, overall a lovely machine, enjoy and take it easy on that beast! All the best - TMF.
As my son is on the cusp of parting with his cash for the latest 2016 version, thought I'd re-watch your excellent review. One thing I have noted is the lack of tire-pressure monitoring - not even available as an OEM option - not the sort of omission I'd expect from BMW. I'm beginning to conclude the XR was subject to far stricter cost control measures which may explain the lack of monitoring, and also would explain the cable clutch. No adjustment is just penny-pinching.....
+Chris Drake yes you may well be right Chris - but, if your son can live with the duck faced looks, it is still a brilliant machine though - thanks for watching- TMF
+Chris X Well it's all a matter of personal taste Chris - I really wish I did like the looks of this otherwise great bike - stick this engine in a GS and I'd buy! I love the looks of the Multistrada but again (IMO) the S1000RR looks pig ugly with those asymmetric lights....so a love child of the two doesn't do it for me I'm afraid! :0) Thanks for watching and commenting, all the best - TMF
Used to be a BMW rider. Owned four of their machines and loved them all until I test rode the KTM 1190 Adventure. No vibes there and PLENTY of power! Give one a try, but only if you are prepared to be impressed!
+bassman2277 Yeah KTM do make great machines - I'm just not overly into their looks....no doubt a test ride would cure that! Cheers bassman2277 - good to hear from you....all the best - TMF
TheMissendenFlyer What's not to like about this? www.asphaltandrubber.com/wp-content/gallery/2013-ktm-1190-adventure/2013-ktm-1190-adventure-studio-02.jpg
+bassman2277 Nah sorry mate, something about that just doesn't do it for me - I find it a little uninspiring, it's a shame 'cos I know these machines always get stunning write-ups in reviews. A bit like the BMW S1000XR - No matter how good the machine technically is, if it doesn't connect with the heart then I'm unlikely to go there......
Thanks for the message. No vibrations as I have the 2017 model variant with different rubber on the headstock mounts. It is a bit vibey especially on the pegs but not dissimilar to my K1300s at 5,500. Revs.
Thanks for the review, have been stalking this bike for a while (am about to move to Rome and think the slightly more street bias might be the answer), anyway I really think the colours are a both NQR. Would love an all black version. Will have a test ride in a week and make a call between a 2hd GS for a year until next years model is released or OMG cannot wait need this urban weapon now. My question - If the looks were not a factor (i.e. you liked them) would you buy this 1st edition?
How do you think the S1000XR would fit a taller rider? I'm 6'2" and want the next bike to fit better than the R9T, did. Liked the bike but it looked scooter-ish with a tall rider... especially considering my occasional passengers are 5'9" and 5'10". A GSA might fit better but I don't want to give up on speed, just yet.
I've owned a lowered Gen1 XR for the past 5 years and have never given the front or rear of the bike a single consideration regarding its looks ... its perfect and much more fun than any GS 😎😎
@@TheMissendenFlyer there is a little vibe at about 6500 but defiantly not the issue a load of the main bike magazine reviews claimed it had .. in my time I've owned many bikes ( mostly 4 cyl) since the mid 70's and hand on heart and I've ridden many that were worse. Bar end weights will sort it anyway and the 2017 gen 1 onwards had a rubber damper fitted under the risers but still the XR seemed to attract the bad press as a vibey bike ... 😎😎
Brilliant review. You should be on the telly, mate. Your reviews are for everyone, i.e. the majority of people who ride, not racers, tech-fiends or the rest. I am currently trying to decide on my next machine. This review has but the S1000XR close to pole.
Very interesting. I'm sure it's a lovely bike with a lovely engine and will win a lot of friends as time goes by. The front end styling does remind me somewhat of the old Triumph tiger, like you had? I can see what you mean when you compare some elements to the GS. But for me that heavy clutch, especially when you consider the amount of traffic we are often in and going back to a chain drive would probably be a deal breaker for me? My GS has the 'Shift Assist' gear change and I love it, wouldn't be without it now. Suffice to say I'm still very much loving the GS and think that BMW have got so much of it right. It is one of 'the' best bikes available on the market today. Just saying!
John Ball Hi John - My old Tiger 1050 was soooo much better looking!! If the Beemer looked like that I'd snap one up immediately. For the time being though I'm with you - the GS is the better machine for my particular purposes.....cheers - TMF
Hi great review ..dont know if youve watched my review yet on the same bike but we pretty much agree on the same things...what were they thinking with that clutch lever !,also i noticed a tiny buzz through the bars but it didnt really bother me ,maybe some bikes buzz more than others ..all the best mark.
TheMissendenFlyer ps ive reviewed the new multistrada dvt and its very comparable to the xr except the engine is more grunty ...its like night and day compared to the one you rode a while ago ...I own a 2010 multistrada and am finding it hard to decide on the new multistrada or the xr they are both incredible bikes
Another honest and enjoyable review many thanks, keep up the good work. You seem to have missed the most important factoid out on this one - TMF / OCD factor ? Any better than the GS? Just a thought, Lee
THE BEST BIKE EVER, BEST COMBINATION OF HANDLING, TORQ, HIGH SPEED, SOUND, WEIGHT, STYLE, CONFORT, PRICE (MULTISTRADA OVER PRICED) AND IF YOU HAVE THE GPS (NAV SYSTEM), ITS A MAGNIFICENT BIKE.
Hi TMF, thanks for another great review, ploughed throug your channel looking for R1200RS review but could not find it. Any plans to make one in future? Cheers
+Vstm Thanks Vstm - no imminent plans but I would like to have a go on one so if I get a chance I certainly will. Good to hear from you again, it's been a while!
Mark Morris ....I didn't ask the price but I would guess base bike for around £13.5K and by the time you've spec'ed up the essential extras - probably not much change out of £15.5K!! Lot of money for a bike innit?!
Well yeah. But was in Honda today to test ride the new vfr800X. That was nice. But again once it's spec is to the standard things it's bloody expensive. Honda want £280 for heated grips. Ridiculous I'm still swaying to the Versys 1000. Once the honeymoon has been booked and paid for then I'll be going to put a deposit down for one.
thanks for the review! I've been thinking what bike to get next, the xr is on my short list. currently on a 15 gs, it's going to be tough to beat. I enjoy your bike/gear reviews, thanks for sharing
+Randall Compton Thanks Randall, really glad you enjoy my videos and I hope the XR review is of some help - good luck with your decision, so many great bikes out there now......
A really good informative review again , I may have just found my next bike here , sports bike performance coupled with touring comfort and pillion carrying ability add up to an ideal bike for me , the looks are an issue but as you stated like a ginger child I could grow to love it !
Soon Haur Teo Hi Soon Haur Teo - No I thin I was just stretching my legs or trying to get a view down the road - I didn't notice any heat issues (and it was quite a hot day too)....thanks for watching - TMF
Good review mate. I have had a 13 and now a 15 GS and my Oct 14 ordered XR has just landed but I don't think I want it now. I am still in GS Love mode, every bike I test ride I dismiss as soon as I jump back on the GS. The things that re putting me off the XR at the moment are: a) the looks b) the vibes c) the heavy clutch (I commute in slow tight traffic) d) the price, should be cheaper than the GS methinks e) potential heat from the engine on legs in summer (I am in Oz) f) the loss on my 15 Trade g) the need to massively refarkle h) seat height feels about the same as the GS, I prefer a bit lower i) It feels a little top heavy at low / walking speed Anyway, I will need to test ride one as I have only done RUclips test rides so far!
Voz Spoz I Voz - thanks for watching and for your kind words. I know what you mean - I've had my GS over 18 months now and still love it, had a long ride yesterday and got home still thinking "Wow this is a great machine". That said the XR is too, you obviously can get on with the looks enough (or you wouldn't have ordered) so hopefully all will be well on the other points - love to hear how you get on. Good luck! All the best - TMF
+TheMissendenFlyer Still riding around on my GS. I am interested in adding another bike to the garage aybe for hardcore offroad to save the GS. Happy New Year mate and keep up the Vlogging, I like it, cheers from Oz.
I absolutely love this bike it's so versatile, I just wish they made it with a prop-shaft instead of a chain. Has anyone ever told you, you might be a little biased towards to the GS ;)
+TheMissendenFlyer that's true. To be honest, despite the weird gap in front, I'm still interested in that bike. Only people moaning on web forums about the vibrations makes me wonder is it that bad? Currently I'm riding a V2 engine bike which vibes a lot, so not sure if I can even feel the XR vibes.
+MaximilianScott Best to ride one yourself and see - I found the vibes quite noticeable at around 75-80mph (just the point at which I cruise!) - surprising given the configuration of the engine....I don't get any vibes on my lumpy ol' GS!
+TheMissendenFlyer "lumpy ol' GS" :) This was my only dream for next bike, until the XR came up. :) You see what BMW did to me? :D I really have to test both of them, one by one.
Bit late to the party I know, but I only just discovered your RUclips channel recently. I've always been a four cylinder man, and as such I just can't get on with the lumpy twins that are available. One which springs to mind is your review of the KTM Super Adventure S, now that is one bike with a horrible front end - it looks like a sad person raising their eyebrows. I like this bike, I even like the looks, I like the performance. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course. I am seriously tempted - the only other contender is the Kwack Versys 1000. But I wanted to see the BMW in action so many thanks for doing all this. So frustrating this lockdown, but no reason to fret, let's all research, reflect and dream. Keep safe all!
...to be fair the new (current) version of the XR looks a lot better in my view and BMW have done a lot to address the vibes since I made this review - the XR is defo a good prospect! ...oh, and welcome along to the channel, what kept you! :0)
I can't decide between the 2016 S1000XR and the 2017 Tiger sport 1050 .. the BMW is way superior, but more expensive. The Triumph as that British class, and let's be honest the 126 hp are more than necessary for an everyday ride.. with your experience with those 2 bike, what's your most honest advice?
Well I prefer the Tiger but by most people’s measures the BMW is the better bike - I’d still have the tiger though....you won’t be dissatisfied with either though...
@@TheMissendenFlyer thank you Sir. I'll probably wait for an opportunity (and a better weather) to test ride both of them. And hope to find a good deal during winter, as the prices are usually a bit lower.
Hey, how is the wind protection in both positions? I am currently on a naked FZ1 and I am looking for a Sport/Turning hybrid to have fun but also decent wind protection in case I have to use the motorway for a longer period, like 1 or 2 hours straight. I'd like to be able to sit upright, set cruse control to about 140 km/h (85 mp/h) without to much wind on the helmet.
+Alexander Mielchen (MiLeX) Wind protection was good - not quite as good as the GS but not far off. I didn't try both positions, just the one it was set at. I'm sure an MRA Vario screen would cure any buffet a taller rider may have....
Thanks for Video. I can't afford one, but like to dream about the various new bikes coming out! Your right about the chain thing, don't know why they just don't make em all shaft drive... An option would be nice.
+Danny Bannister Glad you appreciated that - it's actually a quote from my mother in law "I had to learn to love it" (my brother in law is a ginge)....
I laughed out loud at that comment as well. Good stuff. Thanks for the review. I just bought a 2016 S1000XR 3 days ago, I pick it up this weekend. Can't wait!
Great review, I have been riding the 1200GS LC for some time, wanted to buy another bike so I a tested the XR in the Alps. The engine is amazing but you really feel that it carries the weight higher especially in tight turns (Stelvio) and it actually looks better than on pictures. When using the clutch a lot, the hand gets so tired, really heavy clutch indeed. So I decided to stick with a flattwin and bought the GS adventure for long distant comfort, because of the shaft drive and better handling in tight bends. I feel there is too much need for speed with the XR while for me the GS suits my purposes better. But the engine...the best.
+vriendelijkegroet Glad we concur, the XR is clearly aimed at potential Multistrada owners which also has the same "Need for speed" ethic which some people clearly enjoy...just not for me. Enjoy the GSA - all,the best - TMF
Hi, and how good is it as everyday city bike? How it works at low rpm-s, from 3 to 6 or 7 hundred? Is lack of power at that range or not? And how good is it at low speed, for example if you are in traffic jam and are moving couple miles with a very slow speed?
Well I didn't get to ride it in much solid traffic but that engine is smooth, so I imagine it's fine around town, although it's physically quite a big bike for filtering (doable though, given I filter no problem on my GS)....thanks for watching - TMF
Very nice review, I was seriously considering this as a replacement for my Tiger 800XC but got fed up of waiting for a release date so in March I went for the new Kawasaki Versys 1000 GT which in my opinion is a very cost effective competitor to this BMW and the Multistrada ( which I owned 2011 -12)
Banditmanuk Thanks for the kind comments and enjoy the Kwak - I only ever read good reviews about it so I'm sure you made a good choice - all the best - TMF
Seems like this bike also competes with the Triumph Tiger Sport in the sports adventure non off-road category Given that you owned the earlier version 1050 for years and did a review of the 2016 Tiger Sport not too long ago, I was sort of expecting you to offer an opinion about how the Sport stacks up to it. What do you think?
The BMW is a MUCH faster bike and feels far more high tech - in a different league really. The Triumph is a much more solid work horse bike with a great engine (and I love it!). The BMW is the better bike by any measure, but I can't get on with the looks of it...
Hi MS, I like the latest Bmw review, can you get hold of a new R1200RS and give it the once over for me as I may be interested in putting this model on my list? I would want the low suspension model (760mm seat ) but would be eager too find out what your opinion was of this bike, regards, Colin.
colin clewley Hi Colin - nice to hear from you again - would love to ride an R1200RS......maybe one day if someone wants to lend me one! All the best - TMF
Why are there so many massive SUVs in these twee little Southern towns? You never get any bad weather down there! And they are a real pain in the arse when filtering, especially when the drivers are texting! The usual clear, concise and informative review, by the way. Thanks for taking the trouble, Mate.
+Buzz Shiteyear Hi Buzz, thanks for your kind words once again, good job you never saw my review of the motolug trailer on here.....! ruclips.net/video/GdQHGzchVr4/видео.html
Hi have watched your vids of you Scottish trip mainly because me and a bunch of mates plan to do it next year, and the watched your Welsh trip. Really enjoyed them, thought they where well done and very informative. Keep up the good work. One thing to add and hope it helps, when bikers come towards me I nod my head and nearly always get a nod back, shaking your handle bars would mean nothing to me , so would have no idea you where trying to say hello , hope it helps and once again keep up the good work. Am just about to watch your other stuff🤙
Like it TMF, maybe I can give one of those a shot at next service, I'm a bit worried about vibration through the bars though. Great honest video, have fun and ride safe. Kind regards
Beans Cheers Beans - Yeah, the vibes were a surprise, they're not too bad but definitely there at cruise speed - all the best with the forthcoming trip! - TMF
Great video TMF I’m off to test a 2019 in the week and a Gs I have a 07 GSA and the 4 cylinders and for dive may be a surprise so would you have one in the man cave or not your opinion is valued 👍👍
I took one out yesterday just to find out what the engine was like and it blew me away especially the gearbox and how much lighter the bike is. I think I may be in trouble now............ my GSA felt oh so heavy when I got back on her
I am struggling with look a bit and I think this is the only thing holding me back at the moment. I think it looks a bit like a Transformer at the front so not too sure but having said that I took a while to like the looks of a GS so I think I need more time with one............. watch this space :)
+Mario Fassetta Actually quite similar bikes to ride and both brilliant - personally the BMW loses out on looks for me but try them both, you won't make a mistake with either....
I’d love one of these, it looks like it does everything and well. The only worry would be that at 5’6 it would be too tall even with the low seat option. Oh well a man can dream. Great review.
Nice review and honest comments about the looks, the performance and riding position are right up my street. But the reliability reviews are horrendous. How on earth major manufacturers get away with bikes that have such poor reliability is beyond me. No doubt there will be pelters coming my way for raising the topic.
www.motorcyclenews.com/fleet16/bmw-s1000xr/mcn-fellt-report-bmw-s1000xr/ here’s review from MCN And another with lots of issues ruclips.net/video/-eC_z86NP94/видео.html
Great review & I’m getting to enjoy your sense of humour quite a lot! PS. You know what they say about small hands................. you save money by buying small gloves!!😀👍👏👏👏
A very informative review for me with the comparisons to the R1200GS which is a bike I'm always tempted by, but doesn't quite do it for me. The S1000XR might just be what I'm looking for if I can get the comfort of the GS with the performance and howl of a 4 cylinder engine. How does passenger comfort compare between this and the GS?
Great review, I totally agree with you in regards to the looks of the XR, fugly indeed, I have a new GS too and its a game changer, its awesome. I do feel sorry for you guys having to have those ridiculously large yellow number plates. Why???
Just a note on the clutch... I can see the clutch adjuster from here and I'm 15000 miles away :) haha It's the small wheel to the right of the clutch lever - exactly the same in operation to the brake adjuster on your kids bicycle,.
+Runkmaster ....I stand corrected then - I have the same adjustor on my GS and obviously at the time I rode the XR I never saw it (I must be blind!!) - All the best - TMF
Mr. Flyer- I went back a year or two to watch this review, and am intrigued. As a question I have asked before about another bike, do you think this one could handle the odd dirt road? I agree that the Donald Duck resemblance to this bike is remarkable, and I believe if I owned one I would have a local painter actually make the front end into DD's visage! I have now added the S100XR to the list of motorcycles I will be looking at as my next one.
Sat on both the r1200gs and this bike the other day and trying to pick one is a nightmare! I like the top end on the XR but the seat felt like concrete compared to the GS. I'm surprised you find it more comfortable.
Did I say I found it more comfortable? (Must watch this back!) both bikes actually feel very similar to sit on and I can see why choosing would be difficult - to me it would just come down to looks, I far prefer the way the GS looks over the S1000XR. Good luck with your choice, you can't go wrong with either!
+TheMissendenFlyer The GS looks better, but I wouldn't exactly say I like the GS for its looks. I suppose I'm worried the XR might be unsuited to touring, in that case it's no better than a sport bike. I'm also worried the GS might be a bit too plain for the weekend rides, although I find the latter to be more unlikely. The BMW sales rep kept asking me if i was a speed freak or not, I didn't really know how to answer. I would say i'm not, but when riding in a group i'd usually make more progress in the twisties, more of a confidence thing than ability i suppose. I tend to keep my speed in corners rather than blast the straights - i mean, once you're over 100 on a country road, you're asking for a nasty surprise (car pulling out, horse muck, tractor, jumps)
+TheMissendenFlyer Forgot to mention, thanks for making the content, and great videos! I have subscribed :) No manners me, once i start talking bikes i can't stop
+Eoghan Hennessy Hi again Eoghan, thanks for the kind comments, glad you like my videos. I agree with all you say on the GS v s1000XR - neither are exactly beautiful to look at! The GS is no slouch by the way, stick her in dynamic mode and wind on and she doesn't hang about....it's just the XR feels quicker (although to me not as much as all the magazine reviews made out). For me the S1000XR engine in a GS frame would be the way to go!!
TheMissendenFlyer Yeah I think you mentioned that in the video - that it's not exactly unmanageable power compared to a sport bike. You've made my decision a bit easier Sir, so thank you, but I think I might keep waiting for a while. Having bought and sold a few bikes I want my next one to be a real keeper. Just a waiting game now for the '13 GS to come down in price. Insurance at 24 y/o adds another £1000 a year onto the asking price :(
Think I'll wait for BMW to fix the Vibes before deciding whether it's the XR or the KTM 1300 GT .Personally I subscribe to the Insect analysis of the front - end and I like it more , the more I see it , rather like my loving the Tri 509 looks , dislike at first but later I cancelled my Tri 595 order and bought a 509 , which was a mistake because when flat-out on the way to the Tri rally I found I was being overtaken by my previous bike - A sprint with the new owner , his wife and the family dog ! That dog was too much and the 509 had to go .
+hotrhod46 Hi hotrhod46 - well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the Beemer just doesn't do it for me in the looks department but the bike is very good, I don't think the vibes would put me off if I could get past it's ugly mug, it really is an excellent machine......cheers for stopping by, good luck with your choice! - TMF
Hi TMF, Another great video, the other test rides I've seen people are so consumed by the power they forget about the other stuff, like the ugly rear mudguard! I was getting concerned we weren't going to get a chuckle from you while testing the acceleration, but you managed a ye-ha. Thanks :-) Steve
interesting that you think it's an ugly bike, I love the looks....apart from the pannier scaffolding!😜 Don't think that this bike should be compared to the GS which us a full adventure bike. This thing is a comfortable sports bike, and can only be compared to the Multistrada, and now the new Super Duke GT. There're no other sports tourers with this much power, it's definitely no GS.
+TheLikeableRider Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that eh? I compared it with the GS because that is a bike I know very well, and to be fair often in the past the GS and Multistrada are compared - I take your point that this is more "sports" than "tourer" and I did try and make that clear in my review. Thanks for watching anyway, all the best - TMF.
Nice bike, but I'll stick with my GS. I love the fact I can take it off road if I want to. Wouldn't want to drop the XR in the dirt. With the GS - no biggie.
I test rode that bike a few days ago, isn't it strange though, I ride a honda cbf1000 and my bike is better? although couldn't into the higher power band, because test bike was restricted.
Great review, in a nut shell you have summed up what I felt and found when I rode the XR. The front end looks like a confused duck thats had half its beak blown off, really dont like it. The front end of my GS took a lot of getting used to but then so did the ginger hair on our son. For myself I wouldnt want one (both ginger child and XR) I find the GS far more of what I want from a bike.
Thank you its a burden he has to live with. No son should have his hair colour mocked by his parents as well as 99% of humanity. I feel for him I honestly dont.
Thank you!!! I am touring the Europe with my wife. My last bike was versys 1000 (2015) and I am OK with inline 4. I got used to high revving motors so I hope it wont be a problem on 150 - 160kmh crusing. To get to the Alps we have 400km of highway since we live in north Serbia. Or 600km of highway when going to Greece. Do you still have s1000xr? This video is few years old. What is your long term oppinion on this bike? Thanks again!
Ah sorry, I just have realised that you actually do not own this bike. Ignore my comments. All the best! And let me know if you ever decide to tour the Balkans.
nice review. If the MissendenFlyer kept ,while hard accelerating and before upshifting , his rpms over 7 to 7500 he might have changed his mind on how NOT similar the power is to the multistrada. the traction control and abs are awesome on the bike but it unfortunately lacks an electronic stabilizer. great bike !
Just another entry to add to the never ending bike lotto win list. BMW have said if i ordered now it won't be available until October. The wife says if I order one now she won't be here in October win win lol
ivanandhismightysteed I like the way you're thinking!! :0)
Hahahaha, best laugh today!
Absolutely hilarious! Cheers!
Hahaha
ivanandhismightysteed 😂
"if you can live with the looks".
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me the s1000xr looks much prettier than the GS. Much more modern and sportier. The only drawback i see is the absents of a drive shaft but it gives you so much more in return.
herman stokbrood Hi Herman - you are a lucky man then as it's a great machine! Thanks for watching and all the best - TMF
I agree because I look at this bike even 4 years later and can't think of a prettier bike on the market.... funny how people see thing so differently, lol
Seems strange how you don’t like the looks but own a gs which looks worse 🤷🏻♂️
Great and very honest review, thanks for that.. I bought one 2 weeks ago and i'm loving it. I don't mind the looks as it lulls people into a false sense of security until you gun it and leave them in your wake. The handling is sublime and so very different to my K1300S that I absolutely loved, as I had the 12 and 13 since 2006.Its not as good on fuel as I would have hoped, as managed to get 200mpt on the K1300S might getter better as it loosens up, but its fast capable and fun and that is all that matters. Cant wait for the first service to get it fully unleashed.
Congratulations Peejay, a lovely machine (if you can get around those looks!) - Have you had any of the dreaded vibes or is that cured fully now??
Mark
I will have to agree with you for I find this motorcycle to be absolutely beautiful. The ugliest motorcycle line up has to be Ducati (but that is a personal observation). The biggest failure on this machine is the windscreen - it's sort of like tit's on a boar hog, its there but it is absolutely useless. Congratulations on having this beautiful motorcycle.
Borrowed one when mine had its first service. Rode it hard, absolute animal of a machine
well said Nige!!
TheMissendenFlyer Thanks for your reply. Sorry meant to put Mark, but got distracted by my family fighting near me, house full of women.
Paul Fowler Who's Mark!!??? ;0)
I have owned mine for over a year ow and still love it :) absolute missile and great for touring as well
"Battered about by the fugly stick", my favorite comment by far
I left the UK about a year after you posted this vid. I have to say that I don’t miss that poxy British traffic.
Lucky you!
Not that lucky! France is full of french people, including my wife...
Well, Neil, you ll find a lotta french people there.....😂😂😂😂🙂
Great vid as ever. I suggest you take a look at the new BMW R1200RS as that has everything that good about the GS minus the off road pretense.
Thanks Steve - I agree it looks better but it retains the boxer engine, so may as well stick with the GS!
+Richard Dunn Slightly lower (and that's with the GS low seat!)...
would you ever swap your gs for one.??
...Not at the moment as I'm still in love mode with the GS - The XR is a great bike in many respects, but those looks....!
Shows it's all about opinions , I think it's a really nice looking bike.
Absolutely it is, of course this is only my view - the XR is a phenomenally good bike, I just can't get on with it's front....
Another great review, especially with the distractions on the sidewalk :-) You just proved we can still ride safe and enjoy "ALL" of the sights
+Terry Boaz :0) it's always a challenge that one!!
Revs.
Thanks for that - enjoy!
+Mark Warne-Smith ....it would certainly be on the serious consideration list (if it weren't for the looks)....
How about the vibes?
Very kind of you to say so Adrian, thanks....
Riding a 2015 GSA, and love it. 50/50 On/0ffroad. In the market for a second bike. Currently looking at the XR. Very nice review from you.
+Tor Langvand Thank you...
Always like your videos. What video and mic do you use to get good quality recording and sound?
Thanks Craig, I use gopros on the bike and a Nikon SLR in the garage - Mics are all eBay specials (cheap!). Cheers and thanks for stopping by - TMF
You think the Multistrada with a double face / big tumor on it's face are prettier? How on earth did you come to that conclusion?
Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, just my personal preference on the looks front....
Personally i love the asymmetric face of the beamer. The bike is gorgeous.
Hi great review ..dont know if youve watched my review yet on the same bike but we pretty much agree on the same things...what were they thinking with that clutch lever !,also i noticed a tiny buzz through the bars but it didnt really bother me ,maybe some bikes buzz more than others ..all the best mark.
mark pulling Hi Mark - Nice to hear from you again, yes just watched your review - I'm glad we agreed! Ride safe mate - TMF
""A bit like a ginger child" he says ... as a ginger child, I laughed my ginger ass off ... +1
Sorry about that! ...glad you took the joke as intended ;0)
Nice review. I didn't see you get above 9000rpm though. Not even near full power!
+fangitjoe ...and perhaps this is the issue with this bike - more power than a road machine really needs?
It´s restricted until 1000km
Another honest and enjoyable review many thanks, keep up the good work.
You seem to have missed the most important factoid out on this one - TMF / OCD factor ? Any better than the GS? Just a thought, Lee
Andy Marshall Hi Andy, thanks for that....I think!?
Totally agree on the looks department. ! Great review as always.
Thanks
THE BEST BIKE EVER, BEST COMBINATION OF HANDLING, TORQ, HIGH SPEED, SOUND, WEIGHT, STYLE, CONFORT, PRICE (MULTISTRADA OVER PRICED) AND IF YOU HAVE THE GPS (NAV SYSTEM), ITS A MAGNIFICENT BIKE.
It is a great bike I agree - but stylish? I think not....
YOUR FAVORITE BIKE ?
Grow to love it like a ginger child. Quality statement. Great review too
+Stuart Riddell (R100ELL) Thanks Stuart, glad you spotted that one...you're not a ginge are you??
Excellent review yet again, keep up the good work.
Can you review the 2015 speed triple r?
James Wilson Love too! :0)
Lovely. Bike. Should test ride one lol
How much they going for? Ridiculous money?
Don't like the scaffolding for the panniers though.
Ridiculous
I'm still swaying to the Versys 1000.
Adrian Rigby Good luck with that Adrian - great bike if you can get past it's fugliness.....
Thanks for the great review.
Saw you rising thru slow traffic, was there any massive heat came from engine to cause serious issue?
Soon Haur Teo Hi Soon Haur Teo - No I thin I was just stretching my legs or trying to get a view down the road - I didn't notice any heat issues (and it was quite a hot day too)....thanks for watching - TMF
Sry typo, I mean riding haha.
Can I say that the XR is easier to handle thru slow traffic than the GS?
Soon Haur Teo Yes for sure, the XR feels a lot lighter and feels lower than the GS - so defo easier in traffic....
Good review mate. I have had a 13 and now a 15 GS and my Oct 14 ordered XR has just landed but I don't think I want it now. I am still in GS Love mode, every bike I test ride I dismiss as soon as I jump back on the GS.
The things that re putting me off the XR at the moment are:
a) the looks
b) the vibes
c) the heavy clutch (I commute in slow tight traffic)
d) the price, should be cheaper than the GS methinks
e) potential heat from the engine on legs in summer (I am in Oz)
f) the loss on my 15 Trade
g) the need to massively refarkle
h) seat height feels about the same as the GS, I prefer a bit lower
i) It feels a little top heavy at low / walking speed
Anyway, I will need to test ride one as I have only done RUclips test rides so far!
Functionality over good looks. Wouldn’t bother me. Centre stand beautiful.
I absolutely love this bike it's so versatile, I just wish they made it with a prop-shaft instead of a chain. Has anyone ever told you, you might be a little biased towards to the GS ;)
Thanks for the review. Instead of "wow, what power" etc. I hear from you really reasonable arguments about this machine. Thanks once again. Cheers!
+MaximilianScott Thanks for the kind words Max, it's not ALL about the power is it?? .....nice bike though, definitely fast, but oh those looks!
Great review, want camera and mic are you using by the way, your audio is crystal clear!
Details in the description! :0)
Thanks for Video. I can't afford one, but like to dream about the various new bikes coming out! Your right about the chain thing, don't know why they just don't make em all shaft drive... An option would be nice.
Paul Robson Thanks for watching Paul! All the best - TMF
Learn to love it, like a ginger child! Brilliant!
Can't wait!
Congratulations Dave - an exciting few days ahead waiting for the new bike....enjoy!
Thanks ))
+Buzz Shiteyear Hi Buzz, thanks for your kind words once again, good job you never saw my review of the motolug trailer on here.....! ruclips.net/video/GdQHGzchVr4/видео.html
have you ridden or looked at the Triumph Tiger 1200 explorer? would be interested to see how it compares to the GS and this?
+FuzzyBiker1011 No I haven't yet....sorry about that!
Do I shake my handlebars??? I had no idea....
Can't get on with the looks of it - it rides beautifully though......
TheMissendenFlyer cheers bud keep up the excellent work
Going to test drive one of these at the weekend. Looking to replace my verysys which I find very heavy (30kg heavier than this one)
You're going to love this beast then Matthew, in a different league to the Versys (good bike though that is, the Beemer is something else)....
Went today instead to drive the XR and bought it!
I took one out yesterday just to find out what the engine was like and it blew me away especially the gearbox and how much lighter the bike is.
I think I may be in trouble now............ my GSA felt oh so heavy when I got back on her
Do you like the way the thing looks? I agree it is a brilliant ride....if it looked like a GS I'd have one in a heart beat...
I am struggling with look a bit and I think this is the only thing holding me back at the moment. I think it looks a bit like a Transformer at the front so not too sure but having said that I took a while to like the looks of a GS so I think I need more time with one............. watch this space :)
Great reviews always a pleasure to watch
Hello again. Interestingly Royal Jordanian has also done a review which is very interesting. It seems this bike is causing quite a stir??
Hi again John, nice to hear from you again. I shall check out that RJ video and see what he reckons......cheers - TMF
oh my old hauntingngrounds..
high wyc and bourne end....
used to work in a pub there........
nice bike as well!!
the 404 looks the same..
darian smith .....and the 404 has the same traffic! Cheers for watching - all the best - TMF
Total, comfort level for long distance compared to gs?
How is it compared to the KTM GT 2017 I'm deciding which one to buy
+Mario Fassetta Actually quite similar bikes to ride and both brilliant - personally the BMW loses out on looks for me but try them both, you won't make a mistake with either....
Love that sound!
I got to try one yesterday. Smooth and comfortable to ride, and fast as a MF but lacked some of the R nine T's character.
+jakeizlove Yes they are a great bike, but I agree, maybe a little too perfect! ...bar those looks of course!!
Great review! We weren't such fans of the asymmetric lights either...
Cheers Boss Bikes Club - yeah it's a shame, it inflicts so many of BMW's otherwise great bikes (and stops me buying them)....
The clutch would be a deal breaker for me, maybe it’s my age but I can’t cope with heavy clutch
Peter Broadey it’s not even that heavy. Ride one.
I’d love one of these, it looks like it does everything and well. The only worry would be that at 5’6 it would be too tall even with the low seat option. Oh well a man can dream. Great review.
Thanks Steve
The ginger child line was hilarious, I'll be nicking that one.
Glad you enjoyed it....
Nice review and honest comments about the looks, the performance and riding position are right up my street. But the reliability reviews are horrendous. How on earth major manufacturers get away with bikes that have such poor reliability is beyond me. No doubt there will be pelters coming my way for raising the topic.
I didn't know there was an issue with the bike??
www.motorcyclenews.com/fleet16/bmw-s1000xr/mcn-fellt-report-bmw-s1000xr/ here’s review from MCN
And another with lots of issues ruclips.net/video/-eC_z86NP94/видео.html
Great review & I’m getting to enjoy your sense of humour quite a lot! PS. You know what they say about small hands................. you save money by buying small gloves!!😀👍👏👏👏
A very informative review for me with the comparisons to the R1200GS which is a bike I'm always tempted by, but doesn't quite do it for me. The S1000XR might just be what I'm looking for if I can get the comfort of the GS with the performance and howl of a 4 cylinder engine. How does passenger comfort compare between this and the GS?
I would imagine it's exactly the same from a pillion point of view, maybe a bit more scary on the XR than the GS due it's engine!! :0)
Definitely needs some sort of backrest with that sort of acceleration.
Great review, I totally agree with you in regards to the looks of the XR, fugly indeed, I have a new GS too and its a game changer, its awesome.
I do feel sorry for you guys having to have those ridiculously large yellow number plates. Why???
+Paul Thomas We don't all have ridiculously large ones :0)
How does it compare seat height wise to your GS?
+Richard Dunn Felt pretty similar to me...
Do you get much buffeting at high speeds? Or is it reasonable
You get some….
I reckon it could yes....
“Grow to love it like a ginger child”....brilliant 😂
Glad you spotted that!
- TMF
Getting a Gs310 and a metal detector!💧Great show that man🌈
Hi which do you prefer xr or multi? For long term bike and reliability?
Good question - The XR rides nicer but looks fugly (IMO), the Multi looks gorgeous but is top heavy....so I'd have a GS :0)
TheMissendenFlyer i came from sportbike for sure i will miss the power so i like to choose between the two lol not to long maybe 5 years lol
Just bought an S1000xr! Swapped in my Triple black GS - much more fun🤣
*S1000xr much more fun!!!
Hi TMF,
Another great video, the other test rides I've seen people are so consumed by the power they forget about the other stuff, like the ugly rear mudguard!
I was getting concerned we weren't going to get a chuckle from you while testing the acceleration, but you managed a ye-ha.
Thanks :-)
Steve
DervMan Cheers Steve - thanks for watching and for the kind comments as ever - all the best - TMF
I’m re-looking back at this clip as I can see getting one of these in the future. Just need to squeeze it in next to the GS 😂
I'm sure you'll find room!
interesting that you think it's an ugly bike, I love the looks....apart from the pannier scaffolding!😜 Don't think that this bike should be compared to the GS which us a full adventure bike.
A friend had one a couple years back. Hit a deer on his first trip out of town. $15k life flight, 8 broken ribs etc, The bike was a loss
Oh dear....
nice video. do you have video showing to use the menu in the XR?
M'fraid not Mohamed, I only had this bike for a short while :0(
Nice bike, but I'll stick with my GS. I love the fact I can take it off road if I want to. Wouldn't want to drop the XR in the dirt. With the GS - no biggie.
TheSteelerider Fair enough! Thanks for watching....
I test rode that bike a few days ago, isn't it strange though, I ride a honda cbf1000 and my bike is better? although couldn't into the higher power band, because test bike was restricted.
Fancy restricting a test bike, do they want to sell them or not!
They said it was restricted by the factory for a certain amount of miles, but it had nearly 2000 miles on it, go figure.
...sounds very odd to me...
Good man Kevin, I'm glad we concur (and my condolences to your son)....
Thank you its a burden he has to live with. No son should have his hair colour mocked by his parents as well as 99% of humanity. I feel for him I honestly dont.
Another quality review, better than professional ones! How come you have so many top spec bikes - you won the lottery or something?
I wish....I would of course have to enter in order to win it...
Bikes like this one and the Ducati Multistrada are great at helping you collect tickets!
+Ed in Florida Very true!
Nice review! Mine arrives next week ......
+mrmickeysmiles Be careful on that beast! Exciting times ahead.....
I ordered a red one a week ago. The only reason is it looks better then gsa 1200 and multistrada. I hope 2017 model does not vibrate so much.
Nice one - apparently the vibration issue is solved on the current bikes, so you should be fine...exciting times ahead eh!
+arno maas Sure is, and no lack of power....thanks for watching!
TheMissendenFlyer
Thanks for your thorough review.
+arno maas You're welcome, glad you found it of interest - all the best - TMF
Pick my 2017 model SE up tomorrow
Congratulations!
