- Held over the weekend of March 9th-12th, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway would face challenging weather for their annual 'Steam Gala', with snowfall gracing the north-west.
The event ran with a strong LMS influence, very fitting of the fact that 2023 marks the 100th anniversary since the formation of the 'Big Four' railway companies during the grouping of 1923. The KWVR would play host to three visiting locomotives for the event, running alongside members of their home-fleet, to front 9 locomotives in steam over the weekend; of which 5 would be Stanier 4-6-0's. Visiting from Carnforth between its mainline duties would be 45690 "Leander", while Ian Riley's pair of 'Black 5' 5MT's - 44871 & 45407 would complete the visiting trio. The latter adorned by some Scottish embelishments and fitted with a chime whistle.
The Thursday of the event served as something of a prologue to the rest of the weekend, with fewer passenger services and locomotives running while there was more focus on the demonstration freight service, which made return trips Keighley and Damems. For the rest of the weekend, the freight set would only make one full length return trip each morning, powered by different locomotives, with the exception of Friday where it was cancelled altogether due to the poor weather conditions early on. These days featured a much more intense passenger timetable over the line between Keighley and Oxenhope with frequent double-heading, and a shuttle service operating between Keighley and Ingrow West. While the Sunday featured an earlier finish, the timetable for Friday and Saturday would be identical with different locomotive allocations.
In addition to the services operating over the event, the KWVR provided guided shed tours of their locomotive works and facilities at Haworth. At Ingrow West, there would be spoken presentations as well as a demonstration of their steam crane.
Filming took place over the first three days of the event, making it a pleasent challenge to piece together this video. The incliment weather and reduced timetable on Thursday has seen these clips grouped together for the opening section, followed by a mix between the Friday and Saturday demonstrating the different locomotive allocations between the two days.

Lovely video of steam locos running, steaming, chuffing and whistling while it’s snowing at KWVR. Kind regards from Josh
Really nice Mathew, those conditions up there just added to the whole atmosphere. Loved it 👍🏻
Thanks very much, Jamie! Got exceptionally lucky with the weather.
A fantastic weekend and fantastic video of it. I think Friday was the best day with bright sun blue sky and deep snow the scenery looked wonderful. Thanks for braving the cold
Excellent video, thoroughly entertaining. Good to see that you filmed from some locations I've not seen used before.
Thanks very much! Tried to keep a good variety to the locations.
Eee, that were reet grand lad!!!! Now that's dedication - from you and the volunteers. Some cracking footage and brilliant audio, loving the deep hooters and some great double header offbeats, I was in LMS heaven, thanks Matthew👍👍👍

Framed in your usual aesthetic style. 👍🏻
Not only great footage, but nice clean and crisp audio to match it all.
Thank you very much for the kind words
I wished I lived in the UK…
14:33 *All that lovely C02 we need it it's **-F'King-** Freezing right now and costing me a fortune in Gas Bills !*
Most of what you see is water vapour from condensing steam.
Yes, the amount of CO2 produced by those two engines is really likely to make a significant percentage of the UK's 1% contribution to global CO2 emissions 👏 🙄
A really good video mate, was good to see you again during the gala.
Very Nice, See you around soon.
Cheers. Here's hoping.
Hi Thanks for a great video ,such a lovely railway 👍😁💝
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
Grand job Matt. Keighley certainly know how to put on a decent gala.
@stoplooklisten6374 A visiting locomotive(s) is not the only measure of a good gala. Recent Watercress galas have been very enjoyable, maximising the use of what's been available to them.
Quite the opposite weather today!. Thanks for your video again.
雪の中を行く蒸気機関車最高です。
You can almost call it a Stanier gala
cool trains in snow
It looks like the sets were swapped around on the Friday.
Correct. Due to the heavy snowfall, there were some timetable adjustments. A byproduct was the sets were swapped.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel I see. I saw the ammended Friday timetable but I didn't notice the set swap.
@@7822welshsteam Neither, until quite well into the day
