I hate it that people think you have to shower every day to be clean. It’s definitely not necessary. In my case my skin reacts to everything, even when it’s just water my skin gets very red and itchy. So I don’t shower every day and no, I don’t smell. Better for me, better for the environment! Thanks for the video Lia, it’s very interesting and inspiring, like all of your videos!
So true! My skin also gets dry if I shower every day (at least if the water is very hot and I shower for a long time) everybody is different and these myths about hygiene are sometimes so ridiculous... And I think all of us can decide how often we need to take a shower to feel good and not upset the people around us ☺ (only that some are upset by hearing us talking about it😂)
It all depends. I don't shower everyday as well, but I work from home and don't really get a chance to get dirty arms or calves etc. But if I was commuting in public transport and travelling through dusty and polluted city daily, sweating etc, I think I would feel the need for a shower. Not because I'd be smelly but because of all this micro dirt. Btw. not taking shower doesn't mean I don't wash! Underarms have their 2x a day and butt area everytime I'm in a toilet.
The ones who think that you should shower everyday are the ones that wash themselves with only a soap and their hands and no loofa or washing cloth or anything. If you don't get rid of the dirt that is stuck on your skin, of course you'll smell bad in a day. Skin needs a more aggressive exfoliator, so using only your hands doesn't really get rid that stuck dirt on your skin. I take a shower in every two days or sometimes even three days and I've never looked or smell or felt dirty/smelly.
In my case I shower at least 2 times a day But I live in Brazil, and in one of the warmest cities, so it is impossible not to shower multiple times a day. It is also part of our culture to take really good care of our hygiene, people in other countries may find it strange or wasteful, but for us is necessary, if not for only the cultural aspect but also for the weather aspect
Why do you hate it. It is very personal what people do. And some people have quick showers and live in a country having lots of lakes and rain, meaning no shortage. But if people live in a very got country many shower twice a day. Or where there is a water shortage then they shower less.
This might be different for everyone but I have found when I use lip balm, I need lip balm. When I stopped using it, my lips would be chapped for a few days but eventually my body adapted and I haven't needed it in years. Don't come for me, this is just my experience 😋
Opposite for me, I refused to wear any lip balm as a kid all the way to my teen years, lips were always chapped as hell but I didn’t care, now I can’t go too long without it
I never use lip balm and one thing I have always done is lightly brush my lips as I finish brushing my teeth, which exfoliates a bit and brings natural color, and then I sip black coffee in the morning with a tiny bit of coconut oil in it which seems to condition my lips as I sip. I ski 4x per week and this helps immensely but everyone is different so that's just one idea of many. Loved seeing your bathroom essentials!
My goal for 2021 is to be able to pack all of my belongings in one bag. I’m slowly getting there. As far as toiletries I keep it minimal as well. Shea butter, homemade deodorant, bar soap, etc. thank you for sharing! I like your philosophy!
This has been my goal for a while as well! How is it going for you? As someone who has been practicing minimalism for a few years now, it's still surprisingly hard 🤦
Shalom sis love your head wrap! One bag is my goal as well. I use coconut oil to moistures my body, my face, to oil pull my teeth. I still have my hello fresh toothpaste but I may oil pull & brush only once it’s done. I also use coconut oil for deodorant I just rub it under my arms. I use Dr. Bronner tea tree soap to wash my hair, face and body.I also use it to wash my lil dishes. I’m a car lifer so I dont have much dishes anyway lol. I use baking soda as a scrub for face n body. I’m trying to learn how to use dr. B & baking soda to wash clothes. I used to be a product junky with extensive hair, face n body routines and products but I realized most Ingredients are harmful to us and the environment. I love having less now! I’m learning We don’t need much to thrive✨
In my youth I never really washed my body with soap, just water and my hair with shampoo and I always got comments on how good I smelled, especially when I had a light sweat for some reason. But now I live in a different place and the house just smells different, so I feel I need to shower more often here - our surroundings just give off a scent and we give a scent to our surroundings, but I definitely experienced that our house has an impact on our body scent.
For toilet paper, well.. in my house we don't really use it, we wash ! (just hear me out haha) it's a cultural thing where i live, we use water in a little bucket (water from the sink ) some have a bidet and for outside i personally juste always make sure i have a bottle of water with the amount i need ( i've been doing it since i was a kid so i just know how much water i need so i don't waste it) and then we use small (individual, everyone has their own) towels to dry/wipe Now for Pee, you can just wipe and not use water it's less waste, i am just a bit paranoid about smell and it bugs me if i don't rince a little ! And of course when we're done we wash our hands with soap ( i promise juste wash your hand correctly and there won't be any smell), i understand it can't be for everyone but you can just try it once and see if you're comfortable with it, i find it really useful for when you travel somewhere where there isn't any toilets or paper all you need is water, a cloth/towel and soap !
I use for a few years now reusable squares from old towel for number 1 and toilet paper for number 2. I made tissu for my nose with used t-shirt, I switched a few weeks ago and love it and wished I switched sooner. It is so soft and it is diy. I made a cute cover for the tissues and for the reusable toilet paper I made a cute box with cardboard.
What I really hated when I was a kid were reusable cotton tissues for nose - when it was hard to buy the paper ones or even a toilet paper. When you use the cottons, you still carry it. All day. With you. Becomes. Hardened. And. Disgusting. And. I cannot imagine. My family. Bringing me their tissues for washing. And I have to soak them in water... no, thank you... the best would be catching no cold or flu and no tissues needed ;)
Your skin looks so clear and perfect, whatever you’re doing is working! I have a minimal bathroom routine as well, very gentle vegan shampoo and conditioner, a little argon oil on my hair, coconut and almond oil to remove my mascara, some coconut oil for moisturizer. I do use sunscreen every day, moisturizer for my face. I also just got a bunch of bamboo toothbrushes for my family, so we are slowly switching over to that as well. I’m trying to go zero (or less) wasteful, it is inspiring to see others who have already incorporated this into their routines as well.
Showers: When I worked outside of the home and had to get "dressed up" every day, I showered every day with a commercial body wash. And used deodorant every day. And smelled a bit at the end of every day. It's a self-perpetuating cycle, I think. I now work from home and take far fewer showers. I have a nice natural deodorant that I use maybe twice a week. If I do notice anything about armpit smell it's only slightly offputting and it's not that often, mostly if I forget to use deodorant right after I shower. I do use soap though because I like the bubbles and the scent. But I try to stick with something like an olive oil-based soap that doesn't strip my skin.
Oh yes, I can totally relate! That happens to me as well, also with shampoo. The more I use, the oilier my hair, then I use it even more often and my hair gets oily faster.... But it is kind of hard to break out of this sometimes... ☺
@@ecofriendlia I think we are influenced by commercials and what we see advertised in the store. Everything is supposed to make your hair cleaner or prettier or shiny or smell nice. In the end, it all just goes down the drain anyway. :)
For the last half of a year I've been using natural soap instead of shower gels and baking soda as a deodorant. Works so well for me! (after an initial detoxing period after I stopped using commercial antiperspirants). It just feels so nice and fresh to use simple, natural stuff instead of all this chemically loaded, highly fragranced products, isn't it
I stopped wearing perfume for over 10yrs now...I recently tested a sample on my wrist at Ulta, and nearly threw up and felt feverish. So as a result, I will continue to not wear perfume....my body totally rejects it. Instead, I wear scented lotion made from real safe natural ingredients and essential oils.
I pick up hair ties off the street too. I live in a rural area and I still find them almost every freakin day! I don't even really like using them in my hair (I have super fine hair so I mostly use bobby pins) so I probably have a lifetime's worth already. Luckily they are my cat's absolute favorite toy. 😸
Lip balm is a hard one ! It’s definitely one of those products that the more you use the more you actually need it because your teaching your body to not produce it’s own oils , but as someone who lives in a colder climate I find each year when winter comes I really need that layer of protection so my lips don’t turn to dust ! I’ve found buying lip balm but supporting local vegan handmade creators is my way to go :o) it’s nice to give local business people that little bit of support after all ! x
That sounds like a great solution! It is similar for me, every summer I feel like I could manage without and then winter comes and I realize that I really need it ☺ but I use homemade lip balm or one that is made with natural organic ingredients, to not increase that effect of training the body to need it...
Same, I am typically fine in the summer but when that cold wind comes all the skin on my face gets chapped. That is just the reality of life. So I use local creators for my winter dry skin too!
I simply use vitamin e oil on my lips and face in the morning and evening. I spend a lot of time in extreme weather as I operate a bridge and my lips are never dry.
Hi. I use my all purpose cream in my lips, hands, body and face. That way, I don't need to use lip balm. The cream is made of shea butter, aloe vera gel, argan oil and some drops of vitamin E.
Oh, that sounds like a great solution! I sometimes use lip balm for very dry spots on my cheeks during winter (I sometimes have them once or twice a year so an extra product would not make sense...) ☺
I recommend getting a collection of small cloths to use when you wee instead of toilet paper. Most visits to the bathroom are for wees so you save a lot of toilet paper & money. This habit of mine was very handy earlier this year when people were hoarding toilet paper & the shops were empty. Just throw them in with the next wash. Going to try the showering without soap & see how I get on.
@@ecofriendlia there’s a brand called who gives a crap where you can subscribe to ordering toilet paper that is either made of bamboo or recycled paper and it doesn’t come in plastic packaging. Seems a bit more sanitary then rewashing rags imo.
You're a breath of fresh air! I also wash my hair sparingly and use products that I've made myself. I haven't had trouble with dried lips so far so maybe it's really working. I created a balm that I also use on my body made with argan oil, shea butter, natural vitamin e and lavender essential oils. I apply a small amount on my face after a shower and my lips are set until my next shower (1-2 days).
I think this time Ill start to shower without soap and see if there's a difference. Hehe I am trying the path of intentional minimalism now and I am loving it. ❤️
Coconut oil instead of lip balm! you can use it as lotion/body oil and a hair mask and a makeup remover all at the same time, plus it usually comes in glass jars you can recycle.
It's not always possible to get rid of the need of lip balm or putting a product on the skin. If it is dry in the air due to osmosis moisture will leave the lips and go outside due to the chemical process of osmosis. Even though we can give the lip moisture through even putting water on them since there isn't any fatty layer providing a barrier on top it will leave the lips. Even if we drink water the amount of water molecules in the lips is still so proportionally small to all the molecules binding to water in the air that it will pull out the moisture regardless if we have lips full of moisture.
I have a sprayer attached to my toilet, and i use fabric squares instead of tp. (This saves me SO MUCH money!) I use an epilator instead of shaving I don't wear makeup or use hair products besides shampoo and conditioner. I bathe every other day in the winter and wash my hair every 4 days or so. I have a very small cosmetic bag for minimalist backpack travel.
Can you make a video on your savings and how you mange your money 💰 😁👍 absolutely loving your channel and I hope your subscribers keep growing as its muched deserved 👏
Thank you! I made a similar video once but I will go more in-depth about finances in the future! Right now I am also in a weird in-between phase where my income sources change and I hope to have everything a but more stable once I also have a job in social work (I just finished studying) ☺
And thank you, I hope my channel will grow in the future, I have such a nice community and can talk about things I care about and it can turn into a good income source as well and it is just the thing I like doing most at the moment ☺
A replacement for your lip balm concern, I recommend using unrefined coconut oil! Coconut oil qualifies as a lip balm, face/body moisturizer, and even conditioner for the hair! It's very low waste, cheap, and can last for months. A great product that I promise by always! :)
I'm in a hot humid are, so I shower daily, multiple times in summer! However, I only use soap during my last shower at night. The others are just rinsing. For years, I would itch and break out in red splotches for 30 minutes after each bath, until I figured out I was bathing too often. So I just eliminated the soap (tried different kinds). Thanks for sharing you sustainable tips.
Oh just a side note, I have a salt crystal for deodorant that works very well but I rarely use it. I don't smell. I cut out certian foods such as onion and I have no scent really.
I have the exchangeable heads toothbrush, it's fine, lasted me a year now. The only issue is that it's sometimes hard to "unfix" the heads and fix the new ones, since it's all wood and it changes exposed to water. Pliers and hammer do the job 😅
Thank you for letting me know! Yes, I can imagine that it gets hard to take apart... But I was also worried that it wouldn't stick in there well enough so maybe that is good and bad ☺ Where do you have yours from?
@@ecofriendlia Mine is from Zero Waste Club. I never had problem with the heads not sitting there well enough, it's all pretty solid. Oh and btw (I just watched the part when you're talking about chapped lips), check if you're getting enough vit B and/or iron, it used to be my problem.
I have makeup that I am using up which will take a while. I do use products for my hair and body - facial cleaning ( baking soda ) because I have a scalp - skin condition. I have to be able to scrub and break down the extra oils. So although I buy plastic free bars I do still use such cosmetics and soaps.
Or in some bathrooms, it makes sense to use the tap of the bathtub to attach a hose with an appropriate head to use for washing yourself (really don't know how the pieces are called but I think you understand what I try to say😂)
Hey Lia, i bathe everyday infact sometimes twice a day because i live in a very hot and humid climate so we have to for hygienic reasons. But i do minimal skincare and haircare.... Simple and minimalistic!
I bathe twice a day because I feel like I shouldn't put a body that’s not been washed on my clean bed sheets. Also, I feel best when I bathe before leaving home. Even as a child I always bathed twice.
I'm sure someone has suggested this but a bidet has been a great swap for me or if that's uncomfortable, the brand TP ('who gives a crap anyway') is biodegradable I believe. The bidet can be built in - I just keep an old bottle of water by the toilet with an old clothe nearby to dry off that I can throw in the wash every so often. It might feel a bit strange at first but I've noticed that I feel a lot cleaner! Even on my period when I can typically use twice as much loo roll.
Yes, I really want to try that! If you think about it, it really should get you cleaner anyway☺ and for toilet paper I have a bulk store that sells in packaged toilet paper but during the past few months I haven't really felt like going there just because it is kind of far away and taking public transport just doesn't seem to be a good idea with all the people... 😕 But I definitely want to try a zero-waste system!! ☺
Hm, it is definitely worse during the winter... But our apartment is often too humid since we hang dry our clothes and have to hang them inside during winter... But thank you for your tip, I will definitely pay attention to this! ☺
@midnight stories from a friend Luckily I live in a very nice studio apartment in Zurich - not old but fairly new. Very reasonable rent and all extra costs like heating, water and electricity are included in the rent. So I am very lucky.
@midnight stories from a friend In which country was it? Where I live it is privately owned and a company rents out the apartments. It is not for students.
I think the cracked and dry lips many of us experience are likely down to the dryness of the atmosphere where we live- heating and suchlike. I've heard that if you rub the side of your nose with a finger and then rub that on your lips, it helps- basically the oil that the skin naturally produces in certain areas can be redistributed to areas that need it. :)
As a kid I used either coconut oil or ghee(clarified butter) and sugar 🤷🏻♀️ Sugar, especially over a cut from chapped lips is nice 😁 you can even add a few drops of stain from vegetables(beets, coffee) for a nice tone
You just solved a problem for me! No body soap!!! I find I have to use shampoo on my hair (I use bar shampoo), and for a while now I’ve been looking for a bar shampoo that is cheaper, so I can use it for body wash as well as hair (so I only have one product, but the expensive shampoo bar won’t get used up too quickly, if that makes sense?) Not using body soap totally solves this! I’m so going to give it a go! THANK YOU! Also, I wish I could find a zero waste or at least compostable packaging deodorant that works for me. I tried several different ones over several months, and I had a skin reaction to them all! I wonder if it’s bicarb in them. I would love to keep trying, but they are usually expensive!
It's probably the bicarbonate soda, I've had the same issue with natural deodorants. I'm trying wild at the moment, hope it works. It has bicarbonate soda in it, but the reviews have been positive.
My ultimate minimalist skin care product is oil! I suffered from adult acne for about fifteen years until I discovered an oil is all my skin needs. I use rosehip seed oil (hagebuttenöl, I order it from Germany 😊) but I think any “dry” non-comedogenic oil would work. I use it for my face (cleanser/make-up remover/moisturiser), nails, any dry spots on my body, for shaving, in my hair....highly recommended. Edited to add: it works as a deodorant as well but I prefer a scented (natural) one.
That is a great tip! I tried olive oil and coconut oil for moisturizing but it didn't really work... Maybe I should try this one or look more into different oils in general!☺
Lip balm is good to use. When you intake enough vitamins and water, you might stop needing it, but saying that is easier than doing it. The organism is the most complex thing I've known so far in my life and balancing the functions of the body is the biggest challenge I see daily. Somehow though, when focusing on plant based and full of fruit and vegetable, drinking a lot if pure water way of eating, I stopped needing my lip balm that much. Another thing that helps me personally us exposure to the natural environment - sunbathing, rain and wind gradually. Living more outdoors made my skin not do sensitive. Yet I did this gradually, going out every day todo gardening and composting of my food waste products. Happy November! :) thanks for this channel
I don’t know if you have already tried this, but I find that if I use a lip scrub (made with just sugar/olive oil, items already in my kitchen) once or twice a week, I never need lip balm! ❤
I went (almost) water-only with my hair this year! Honestly, I've never been happier with my hair, except that it does get really dry sometimes (hence why I use conditioner once a week or so). Also, I do use makeup as a confidence boost, but I've whittled my products down a lot; for example, I use Besame cake mascara for mascara, brows and eyeliner, and I stopped using foundation/concealer. I also moisturize because no matter what I do my skin gets pretty dry :P :P
I was going to try no moisturizer, then I read something from a dermatologist. She said you must wear it or the skin gets pits and once they are there they never go away. I'm going to try to no poo...now's the time!
I'm brazilian and here in Brazil we have the habit to shower everyday, taking even more than one shower per day. Brazil is a tropical country with humid climate. Our indiginous people, the brazilian natives, are known for their good hygiene and we inherited this habit from them - but just because it feels sooo uncomfortable to not shower and things like this here!! It's so amazing to get to know how people take care of their bodies around the world, and to see how the climate and history interfere in those habits.
I LOVE this video, i am the same and I described It on my blog. I wanted a video that explain the same and... I find you! Thanks for sharing this, so natural 👏🤩
Thats so great "karma on the eye!"...i love your way...it is perhaps nothing for me at the moment , but a powerful inspiration! Best regards from Eileen / Germany...i love your videos so much!!!!
Well, I use an easier deodorant, it is baking soda. You just wet your hand put a little baking soda and rub it on your skin. And I exercise every day and don't smell. To shower I use a soap made out of coconut. It is hand made. I have to shower every day because of my exercise. And for skin lotion I just use coconut oil, which is organic. My daughter's hair and my hair are short so no hair bands. The only extra thing I have is clippers to cut my husband's hair, my daughter's hair and my hair. 😁 And scissors and a fabric cape for the hair oh and no menstrual cup, I don't need it anymore. Thanks Lia for your video. 🤗 Te cuidas chica. Saludos. Adiós. 😊
My deodorant has baking soda I. It, I think it is also the ingredient that treats the smell! Oh, that is one thing I haven't thought about, that I won't need hair ties if I cut my hair (I want to buzz it off at some point just not sure when) ... But maybe I'll keep them because I most likely will end up with long hair again... ☺
@@ecofriendlia When Covid hit I quit wearing deodorant. Thought this was a good time to test if I really needed it. Turns out, no. My friends kept telling me I probably didn't need it and they were right. We are all past menopause. Something to look forward to! I also love I don't have to shave as much anymore. There are some good things to aging, but mostly it's a drag!
@@ecofriendlia I learned how to make a hair bun without any hair ties, just usingy own hair and it's been life changing😀😀 though you need to have long hair for it🙏
You could try an occasional kitchen oil & sugar lip scrub to keep your lips in good shape, but I still think lip balm is probably necessary. I live in a very humid climate and I still need lip balm every day. You hair looks amazing!
I've been simplying my shower and skicare routine over the years as I hate to have multiples of products. I use a cleanser every 2-3 days mostly when I shower every 2 -3 days so its easy to remove in the running water, I'll also shower every 2-3 days unless I have done heavy excercise or its muggy hot (we get to 30 - 48 degrees in summer). Most times will just wash my face with a facewash and then put Jojoba oil or moisturiser on and I am done. I use deodorant mainly when I leave the house or am excercising and I use an olive oil soap for my body and a shampoo bar for my hair., period underwear and reusable pads during that time of month. You should try using olive oil as a lip balm I heard it has rather good moisturising properties as its used as a base in soap products :) :)
This is so great! My boyfriend has been gradually swapping out his bathroom items for more sustainable options. He's doing so well!! But I need a little more work 😅
my lip balm replacement; oil. i use argan oil as my facial lotion/moisturizer & almond oil for my body. both are good for lips too, if you need it throughout the day find a liquid travel container :)
I work as a therapist in a nursing home and was shocked when I discovered that residents were only allowed 1 and sometimes 2 showers a week 😱 They sponge bath (the important parts) on the other days. I’ll have to try this.
I have it the other way around with shaving, haha. I don't shave my pubic hair like almost never but I do occasionally shave my armpit hair and legs. My hair is super dark and visible though. Also, I wish a comb would work for my hair but alas, it is too tangly. Great video otherwise. Our lifestyles are very different but I find a lot of inspiration on your channel.
I have stopped using body wash and started using soap without perfumes on my body, as well as on my face and hands. I feel that using just a bit in the right areas when I shower is enough to be super clean. My skin is naturally glowy and more hydrated! I have also switched to using a natural shampoo bar and I really like it. Now I am trying to use it less often and see how my hair reacts :)
Thank you! Oh yes, that is something that I should do... Somehow I have never really been good at remembering to floss 😕 now I don't even own any... Luckily my teeth did look good the last few times I was at the dentist but they have also told me that I should floss☺
Absolutely flossing is important. I love Colgate ribbon waxed dental floss. I wonder what all fruitarians that are so natural and do not visit the dentist or have teeth cleaned twice yearly, but maybe dental tooth tabs. What will their teeth look when they are about 60 or 80. Plus their bones and health. I wonder. Have a great Dentist in Effretikon near Zurich. Greetings from Switzerland.
My son has perioral dermatitis in the face, so I do some CREME for him, sheabutter, cocosoil, some times I put some aloegel in too... more moisture. I make ALOEGEL from juice and have some colloidal silver in it, and make it thicker with "guarkärnmjöl " in swedish. I buy concentrated fluid soapbase from cocosoil- FLUID SOAP soapbase/water/guarkärnmjöl and eteric oil... so when wash my hair I use bakingsoda and luquid soap as SCHAMPOO and some apple cidervinegar and some water. DEODORANT some of my creme with tiny of bakingsoda, but bakingsoda is strong and can be hard for sensitive skin, so I can use only creme. My feet, raw sheabutter after shower is best! But I have athlete's foot (fungus), try to take aloegel with colloidal silver in....after dried, sheabutter...need to try some better? Teetree oil? Suggestion?? Anybody Agneta in Sweden.
Not needing lip balm? Try animal fats (fat soluble vitamins) eat butter daily, eggs, fatty meat. It will help immediatly because dry lips mean lack in animal fat and dehydration. Fat hydrates while water actually dehydrates.
You can use natural oils for dry lips in the evening before you go to bed and in my experience you don't need to carry lip balm everywhere because it is very effective way of getting rid of dry lips. It is also sustainable because you can just use your own bottle in package free shops where you can buy oils. ;)
I wish I could be more minimal with my bathroom essentials. I have skincare, because for some reason I have adult acne, dang it, working on my diet to try to see if that will clear it up. I use makeup, but very sparingly so I think that that's less wasteful, and the brands that I am gearing towards are refillable and aware of their footprint. Also I use shampoo and conditioner because shampoo bars dry out my hair :(. But I tell myself that it's still good to try to work on brands that work well for me so that more brands can become eco friendly, and then provide more options for all the needs of the people.
I'm not the only one collecting hair ties on the street! I'm thinking at gifting some of mine because I really don't need so many. I couldn't get rid of lip balm completely but I have drastically reduce it by only using it in winter when my lips crack. It seems counterintuitive but the less I use it the less I need it so by slowly removing it my skin got used to live without it. I hope it makes sense
I don't know if that works for everybody, but I just stopped using lip balm and hand cream, and after some (pretty hard and annoying) weeks, lips and hands started to get fine without :) maybe you can try that, but it takes some time.
Nice video. I think you should check into the possibility of finding a soap that also can be used on your hair - this way there is no waste of a cleaning type product. You might even think about making your own soap. It's just an idea. I started minimalist type incentives inside my home about a year ago, and the more I give away, the better I actually feel. I'm not where I want to be though because I have an extremely difficult time getting rid of paperwork.
I've heard before someone taking flax seed oil at meals for ayurveda and that that has kept them oily and nice. I bet that you could used your cooking oil that is essential to you as your lip care also. You could put it in a small container and then just not need to buy lip balms.
and I think I've tried just straight coconut oil as a balm and it makes my lips dry I think. But then when you eat oils, like in ayurvedic medicine it helps your body to be more balmy or hydrated.
Hi Lia. I just found your channel and it's really inspiring, I try to live more sustainable myslef. I am wondering what's your opinion on sunscreens, as you don't use any skincare? The sun rays are damaging our uncovered skin all the time, no matter if it's cloudy, or we stay inside houses. I feel that if I can somehow protect my skin from cancer in the future i should do it, not to mention anti-aging properties. :)
Hi, I've been trying the no-poo/green tea rinse/rye flour on/off for a few years now, and I struggle a bit with an itchy scalp, and greasy greasy hair. I can't use my regular boar bristle brush as the sebum/dust/grease clogs it, and have been using a comb like yours, that I then have to clean every time, I've given my hair a good brush. I often wonder, if all this grease won't go to the bed sheets when I have to clean my comb every time. What do you experience? I would LOVE to not use products, but I also find it quite straining on my every day life and sense of hygiene to have greasy/waxy hair, whilst everyone else have this commercial shiny, silky, airy kind of hair. I know it's not natural, and filled with chemicals, but the FEELING of your scalp being able to breathe and be more silky, is quite hard for me to not have when I do a no-poo. Would love to hear how you tackle all this.
I have the exact same experience! Apple cider vinegar rinses help a lot with the feeling but I have to clean my comb after every brush too and try to change bedsheets (especially pillow covers ) regularly even though I haven't noticed them being extra greasy. I don't really have a solution and that is why I have been struggling a bit since I started 2017... One thought is that maybe the silky hair texture is not as normal as we think... But a product of these harsh shampoos. But I always on a fine line between trying and hoping it gets better and feeling frustrated because a lot of people seem to have really silky hair even with the only water method... 😕
@@ecofriendlia I was given this shampoo from a friend, as it didn't work for her, but so far it seems to work REALLY well for me, so I wanted to link you the brand, as I appreciated your honesty about your experience that was similar to mine. eliah-sahil.com/en/product/organic-shampoo-amla/
I totally respect and understand all of your decisions shared in this video! But, I am concerned with the fact that you have no sunscreen (as I do believe that is an essential for all people).
I get that! Sometimes I use my son's sunscreen during the summer when I spend a lot of time in the sun. That has worked for me so far, but I know maybe it would be better to wear sunscreen every day...
Eating flaxseeds is great for your skin hair and nails. I put it in my breakfast every morning and I have noticed my skin needs less lotion, my nails stopped chipping, and my hair stopped shedding like a dog. It might help with the chapped lips!
Everytime I wear deodorant I end up smelling so bad! I've tried conventional and eco-friendly ones (Native). I smell fine with no deodorant. I think it clogs my armpits and makes them gross and wet lol
I know a lot of people love native deodorant... But I think if it doesn't work for you and you don't need it, don't use it, I would love to be able to just declutter it ☺
@@ecofriendlia it's interesting eh! Goes to show it's different for everyone. I am currently trying to declutter my bathroom these days - this video is an inspiration for me :)
Could you tell me which IUD you have and what do you mean by not having a period (how common is it with IUD usage)? I read that it increases chances of getting the cancer, what are your thoughts on that? Thanks a lot :)
I have the "Mirena" and don't have a period at the moment. It can stay in for five years and last time my period came back after two years. It is pretty common for women with this IUD to not have a period at least that is was three doctors have told me. I have not heard about an increased risk of cancer and I really hope it's not true... I have had cancer as a kid and don't need that again...
Are you serious about that: most of the waste goes to landfill anyway, sooner or later, even if they are recycled? I am studying sustainable development in the UAS (in Finland) and we also have waste management as a subject there. And I have been told that Germany is number one when it comes to recycling systems in Europe (and maybe in the whole world!)!! Finland is rated very high also, but Germany is even better. And I have also been in Germany myself to see and study their waste management systems (I was in AWA in Eschweiler) and I really believe that the systems and technology is very high quality there! In Finland only 1% of waste go to landfill, so if Germany is better, the number must be even smaller than that! Before going to landfill there is incineration, and there goes too much waste now (much more should be recycled better), but only the little rest of waste go to landfill. Things are very different in USA for example, but did you mean Germany now? Or the whole world? I am very interested in waste management, so I would really like to hear your opinion about that issue! =)
So interesting! I was referring to a fact (I haven't read the studies myself) that worldwide only 9% of plastic gets recycled, so I would imagine if it is always only 9%, on average one piece gets recycled once if it is lucky 😕. You are right, Germany is always thought to be the leading recycling country but as far as I know, they called it recycling when they shipped the plastic to China and other southeast Asian countries and also when ut is burned. Also, I think often mixed material things are harder to recycle as well as black plastic and whenever something is too oily. But these are just things I read online and not specifically for Germany. Even though we try to live as zero waste as possible we still buy packaged food and always recycle every little piece of plastic, aluminum, glass, and whatever can be recycled here. I just became more and more pessimistic over the last few years when hearing that not everything that is claimed to be recycled actually turns into a new product... I still hope recycling can be a solution to a part of the waste problem more and more in the future! ☺
Thank you for your answer, Lia! I think that worldwide situation is much worse that situation in our countries. It's also really wrong that rich countries dump their waste into developing countries. Hopefully situation gets better in the future!
That doesn't work for me. It's just oily for a moment and then it is as dry as before. But maybe I am missing something? I feel like I need something that makes the coconut oil stick to my lips ☺️
In my case I shower at least 2 times a day
But I live in Brazil, and in one of the warmest cities, so it is impossible not to shower multiple times a day. It is also part of our culture to take really good care of our hygiene, people in other countries may find it strange or wasteful, but for us is necessary, if not for only the cultural aspect but also for the weather aspect
Why do you hate it. It is very
personal what people do. And
some people have quick showers
and live in a country having lots
of lakes and rain, meaning no
shortage. But if people live in
a very got country many shower
twice a day. Or where there is
a water shortage then they shower
less.
This might be different for everyone but I have found when I use lip balm, I need lip balm. When I stopped using it, my lips would be chapped for a few days but eventually my body adapted and I haven't needed it in years. Don't come for me, this is just my experience 😋
I noticed the same! Interesting, right?!
Opposite for me, I refused to wear any lip balm as a kid all the way to my teen years, lips were always chapped as hell but I didn’t care, now I can’t go too long without it
And your hair looks really pretty today btw
Thank you! ☺
For me, this is way too extreme, but I really appreciate what you do and that you share your very interesting minimalist lifestyle with us, thank you!
Been trying to do the same 💜
In my youth I never really washed my body with soap, just water and my hair with shampoo and I always got comments on how good I smelled, especially when I had a light sweat for some reason.
But now I live in a different place and the house just smells different, so I feel I need to shower more often here - our surroundings just give off a scent and we give a scent to our surroundings, but I definitely experienced that our house has an impact on our body scent.
Drinking enough water doesn't necessarily prevent cracked lips. You can still have dry lips even when you drink enough water
It is a matter of enough vit. C income too, not only water
Also a big reason why lips get chapped is because they don't have pores like the rest of our skin, so it isn't able to produce oil to hydrate itself.
It means that you have to eat more fats.
For toilet paper, well.. in my house we don't really use it, we wash ! (just hear me out haha) it's a cultural thing where i live, we use water in a little bucket (water from the sink ) some have a bidet and for outside i personally juste always make sure i have a bottle of water with the amount i need ( i've been doing it since i was a kid so i just know how much water i need so i don't waste it) and then we use small (individual, everyone has their own) towels to dry/wipe
Now for Pee, you can just wipe and not use water it's less waste, i am just a bit paranoid about smell and it bugs me if i don't rince a little !
I do the same - use an old towel for number 1s! And if you eat vegan you barely even need paper for number 2
I'm so impressed that you collect hair ties on the street, I'd never considered doing that!
I see a lot of black hair ties when I go jogging. I picked one up today.
Hopefully your cats don't swallow them. They can be very harmfull and even dangerous, so please be careful! 🐱
I use them as rubber bands. To tie electrical cords. Or chain tie them together to use as a band around a book.
Instead of lip balm you can just use shea butter, works great! And you can also do a lip scrub with your toothbrush and some sugar!
My essentials:
1. Shampoo
2. Toothpaste
3. Toothbrush
4. Hair ties
5. Dry shampoo
6. Blow dryer
7. Razors
8. Comb
Wow wow. Can’t imagine myself with so less stuff. Hats off to minimalistic people 🙏🏼
I recommend getting a collection of small cloths to use when you wee instead of toilet paper. Most visits to the bathroom are for wees so you save a lot of toilet paper & money. This habit of mine was very handy earlier this year when people were hoarding toilet paper & the shops were empty. Just throw them in with the next wash. Going to try the showering without soap & see how I get on.
That is a good idea! And the reason I didn't panic this spring 😉 but I haven't tried it yet ☺
In my bathroom all I have is a solid soap for body and hair, 3 towels, an electric toothbrosh and an electric razor I don't need more :)
I think this time Ill start to shower without soap and see if there's a difference. Hehe I am trying the path of intentional minimalism now and I am loving it. ❤️
That's great, I am glad intentional minimalism is something you love! And I am curious if showering without soap has benefits for you too! ☺
(This saves me SO MUCH money!)
I use an epilator instead of shaving
I don't wear makeup or use hair products besides shampoo and conditioner.
I'm so inspired by your channel!! I'm not quite that simplified but I'm really happy with my low-maintenance and low-waste routine (:
You are extremely honest in this video, highly appreciated
I am so glad that we are seeing a small youtuber getting bigger and bigger. I love you and your content is awesome.
Something I’m planning to do is get a bidet. Some have dryers or you can just use a towel, napkins, or unpaper towels
Try just washing in the sink instead of bidet, I don't know why more people don't do it. It doesn't require acrobatic skills:)
Or in some bathrooms, it makes sense to use the tap of the bathtub to attach a hose with an appropriate head to use for washing yourself (really don't know how the pieces are called but I think you understand what I try to say😂)
You can get a Muslim Shower Tap. They can be attached to your toilet easily and are pretty cheap too 😊
@@ecofriendlia They're called Muslim Shower Tap's Lia 😊 Easy to fit to your toilet and keep you super clean with no need for paper too 😊
@@ShakiBee541 I just now looked them up and they sound perfect for me thank you!
Hey Lia, i bathe everyday infact sometimes twice a day because i live in a very hot and humid climate so we have to for hygienic reasons. But i do minimal skincare and haircare.... Simple and minimalistic!
I can totally imagine that that is necessary! Do you shower or bathe in hot water or cold, since it is hot and humid outside? ☺
@@ecofriendlia Very much cold water :)
I bathe twice a day because I feel like I shouldn't put a body that’s not been washed on my clean bed sheets. Also, I feel best when I bathe before leaving home. Even as a child I always bathed twice.
@@Romans116Gurl i agree...me too always bathed twice as a child also :-)
I'm sure someone has suggested this but a bidet has been a great swap for me or if that's uncomfortable, the brand TP ('who gives a crap anyway') is biodegradable I believe.
Using the heater very sparingly during the winter really helped my dry skin and lips. It's really surprising to see how much drier the air gets 🙈
Hm, it is definitely worse during the winter... But our apartment is often too humid since we hang dry our clothes and have to hang them inside during winter... But thank you for your tip, I will definitely pay attention to this! ☺
@midnight stories from a friend
Luckily I live in a very nice studio
apartment in Zurich - not old but
fairly new. Very reasonable rent
and all extra costs like heating,
water and electricity are included
in the rent. So I am very lucky.
@midnight stories from a friend
In which country was it? Where
I live it is privately owned and a
company rents out the apartments.
It is not for students.
@midnight stories from a friend
So where do you live now then?
Greetings from Switzerland.
I heard about using this mixture as a lip scrub but I actually haven't tried, so maybe I try this winter when it gets worse ☺ thank you for sharing!

Te cuidas chica. Saludos. Adiós.
Yes! Baking soda is an amazing deodorant, works so well for me.
I do like the one with the exchangable head instead!
I love your approach to personal hygiene! However (: D) I'm a dentist. Please: Floss! Had to say that, sorry. Looking forward to your next videos. : )
Thank you! Oh yes, that is something that I should do... Somehow I have never really been good at remembering to floss 😕 now I don't even own any... Luckily my teeth did look good the last few times I was at the dentist but they have also told me that I should floss☺
Great video Lia! I use Georganics dental floss, which comes in a cute little refillable glass container with a metal lid.
@@ecofriendlia maybe floss in the shower if that's more convenient :). I'm a dental hygienist and one of my patients taught me that.

@@lyzettemaguigad2828 Genius! I might try that because I also forget to floss.
Don’t forget the Lubeka! Unlike a horrible toilet brush it never needs replacing - and is super hygienic
This was such a cute and sweet video!😀
Anybody

I don’t shower everyday either, just twice a week :)
If you need lip balm then continue to use it. I reuse my lip balm tub and fill it with coconut oil. I have had the same lip balm tin for years!!
I don't know if that works for everybody, but I just stopped using lip balm and hand cream, and after some (pretty hard and annoying) weeks, lips and hands started to get fine without :) maybe you can try that, but it takes some time.
hahaha I do the same with hair ties!!! Haven't bought them in almost 2 years ;)
Jojoba oil for all my moisture needs... skin, hair, and LIPS!!!
raw cocao butter is also a great substitute for lipbalm, don't know if thats better than your current solution though.
Thank you for the tip! I will try that if I feel like I need another solution! Or the next time I have some cacao butter ☺
I don't use body wash in the shower either. I also shower every few days usually. (More if sweaty).
Hey, what is the brand of the little towel?
I try to put them in smoothies but somehow haven't eaten smoothies a lot during the past few months... 😕
Really enjoyed your video ! Thinking about going soap less in the shower too ! Is it too extreme ? Not at all ! If it's good for you !
Tip # 7 for saving your money, don't buy things that you really can't afford.
I also pick up hair ties on the street!
Pure coconnut oil itens serves me too to hidrate the all boby
Great video. Would you be comfortable posting links to the products in your videos. E.g., in this video, to the toothpaste tablets and toothbrush?
I don't know if I have links to all of them... On Instagram I like to the accounts on the same picture as the one in the thumbnail ☺
@@ecofriendlia Thanks for your reply. I'm not on Instagram. I can google to look for toothpaste tablets.
I've been using crystal deodorant for about a year now and I'm loving it. I use the unscented one 😁
@@jessie9653 I think I should try that again! I remember using it when I had a physical outdoors job and it worked!
Present watching always yout vlog in luxembourg...
I have had cancer as a kid and don't need that again...
where did you get your comb? my bamboo one ive had for 6 years is finally breaking and i def need to invest
Seems reasonable to me. I have a similar amount / type of item.
Can you give me link to see that shaver looks amazing. Works for intim area?
love this 💗
Are you serious about that: most of the waste goes to landfill anyway, sooner or later, even if they are recycled?
You can use coconut oil on the lips :)
That doesn't work for me. It's just oily for a moment and then it is as dry as before. But maybe I am missing something? I feel like I need something that makes the coconut oil stick to my lips ☺️
