- Sharper than the Sony G 70-300 telephoto lens, and reportedly on par with the Sony GM 100-400. I adapt and review the Contax Zeiss Vario Sonnar 100-300 telephoto lens on my Sony Alpha 7R iii and show you just what it can do.

Thanks for your enthousiasme.
I couldn't agree more in general about these Carl Zeiss lenses. I bought this one too and the extension rings now. thanks for that tip!
I use them professionally as a filmmaker and photographer next to the modern Canon lenses as an image choice or alternative.
I call them indeed more 3D and filmic image or more analoge feeling. Difficult to explain to clients but some of them understand and love it.
Professional image makers do like it more and more and with justice.
Greetings, Onno Nugteren the Netherlands.
Thanks for the nice comment, Onno! Happy filming :)
My favorite lens. I love the sharpness. The reason I bought it was because of the contrast though! absolutely wonderful
I have a Contax 80-200 lens. The images produced by that lens are just outstanding. And yes, the 3D rendering is not a myth.
Oh nice! Do you have an examples of the shots you've made with it? I really like my 100-300; and I've gotten use to the push-pull, though I still prefer a twist zoom.
@@ericinthewild yes, I have shot a lot of stuff. Might make a video and post it. Will paste the link here in a week maybe. Subscribed too.
Thanks a lot for this! I think vintage lens and Zeiss lens in particular are still underrated for professional use. I got the Distagon 28mm and I fell in love with the overall quality. I feel confident about purchasing this!
Did you end up purchasing it?!
Shhh... don't tell anyone about this lens until I get my 2nd copy ;)
Does using the Contax extension tubes add anything different than using off brand tubes?
Lastly, just wanted to add that this lens is usable 200-300mm range with Mutar II (2x extender), but with added CA and slight resolution loss. You can use a rubber band or tripod collar to keep the lens in the 200-300mm range (going under 135mm will cause the rear element to make contact with the Mutar front element).
Ha! Save some water for the fishes!
So, extension tube wise, I think they are all more or less the same (of course, the cheaper it is, the less likely the quality of the glass is equal). Anyway, I am not sure if you can find some off-brand TCs, but maybe you already did!
I also am aware of the ability to use it with the Mutar II, but smashing it into the rear element was never very appealing :D
Looks great! A lot sharper than my Canon EF 75 - 300 4-5.6 lens which I've now used with adapter on A6300.
It really is good! The problem may be the MF, but if you're OK with MF and you can find the lens, get it!
@@ericinthewild Sometimes MF gets to my nerves but usually it's enough for me. I rarely shoot fast moving things.
The extension tubes just magnify the image or shift the minimum focus? I can’t find clear information about that
Hey Nicholas! They just shift the minimum focus! Check out one of my recent videos for more info on macro type options: ruclips.net/video/IMLplvPYrpU/видео.html
ericinthewild Thanks, Eric. I’m looking at this lens for full frame video and see the extension tubes are pretty easy to find, but may go for the ef tube instead. My contax primes I’ve used the leitax EF mounts screwed on, then metabones to E ... just to be able to throw them on other cameras and speedboosters as needed. so I’m just worried at the play that will come from the extension tubes and an adapter. Also, there’s not a lot of video sample footage with this lens, just finding photo. Do you end up using different variations of the extension tubes much or just maxing it out? The canon ef tube is 25mm, not as customizable I guess as these smaller increments.
If this len is used on Sony A7r2(3, or 4), will the image be the same (Sharpness)?
I would imagine similar results.
Hello,
Found a great deal for this: Do you recommend it for run n’ gun cinema filming? I assume it’s parfocal.
I never used it really for video, so I cannot answer that question as exact as you'd like I'm afraid. I can however warn you about 'good deals', do be sure the lens is not suffering from any separation or cloudiness in the elements, as many of these tend to do over time! Good luck!
@@ericinthewild Thanks! Got the 70-300mm in excellent condition. Now to find a rear lens cap.
@@StriderBLH I bought an K&F adapter and simply got a cap for my normal lens backs!
@@ericinthewild Got a fotodiox adapter. Works great. Got a 24-85mm Vario-Sonnar also, and don't want to get two adapters. Find a 3d printing spec I am going to try.
@@ericinthewild Thanks again for the info, and the video: This is such a gorgeous lens.
Adapter 🙏🏻?
I used Novoflex, but any one should do the trick!
You keep commenting on sharpness, but you only note the f stop on one photo. Since f stop & sharpness are related, that context matters! Ugh.
You lost me when you said that you have a UV filter on the lens!
Oops.
Where is the roll-eyes emoji when you need it?
