This film was hacked to bits in the editing room according to the director. Original test screening cut was more adult and had an overall dark comedy vibe (and also received the best response out of all subsequent test screenings).
I suggest checking out the unofficial Extended Cut I put together (includes deleted scenes and more creative nods to the 80s Gadget cartoon).
