  • changing the spark plugs on my 2001 RX300. At that mileage it was idling just a little rough but no big deal. MPG was still above 20.

    I would like to add a few additional suggestions to Yader's excellent video. I gained better access to the rear plugs by :
    1. removing the wipers
    2. removing the plastic panel covering the wiper arms and the wiper motor, and
    3. removing the steel basin beneath the wipers--which holds the wiper motor (it runs under the wipers from one side of the engine compartment to the other).
    These 3 steps will give you another 5-6 inches of space to work with between the rear of the engine and the firewall. This should take less then an hour.
    I would also suggest dropping a 3 to 4 inch extension attached to the 5/8 spark plug socket into the chambers to start with. And adding another 3 to 4 inch extension to the first one. The workable space is so small it helps to add the extensions in increments.
    I then used a short, stubby 6-7 inch ratchet to remove the plugs. A bigger ratchet won't work as well. The toughest one will be on the right rear of the engine (looking from the front of the car to the rear)--you can only use one hand on the ratchet because of the small space. I actually pushed the handle of the ratchet with the butt end of a hammer to move the ratchet handle and loosened the plug on the right side. The plug on the left side and the middle plug will be easier. And believe it or not, (if you remove the wiper basin) you will be able to use two hands to access the rear middle plug--one hand entering from the left of the exhaust manifold, and one from the right. Be sure to remove all the stuff Yader suggested in his video to begin the process.
    Hope it helps--and good luck!

      I’m new to all of this mechanical car work, I’m working on teaching myself. Does it need a specific spark plug? Sorry if this sounds dumb.

    Thanks for DIY vid. Great help! One thing I noticed though is you do not have a rubber spark plug insert in your spark plug socket. There is an insert made especially for this purpose. It fits snugly around the head of the spark plug so when the plug is unscrewed, the plug comes out with the socket. Most spark plug sockets come with it already installed. Hope this makes for easier jobs in the future.

    Thanks for posting this video. Your's was the only one I could find that really showed replacing the rear spark plugs.
    My RX300 has 131K miles. Manf recommends replacement at 120K miles. Local mechanic told me $500+up to replace. At that price I need to do it myself. I always did my repairs in the old days, but front wheel drive cars are a pain in the butt to service.
    Thanks again.

    I really enjoyed the oh so complete detailed video of the work! I like to do some of my own work still but will turn this one over to my mechanic. Way too much for me to tape off to help me remember how to put all back together properly! Changing the coils and spark plugs was tough enough enough for me!

    Luv the music. Just so everyone knows you can purchase a spark plug extension swivel socket removal tool that has a internal magnet along with that inner rubber grommet on Amazon. Couldn’t find anywhere else I own 4 other different spark plug sockets that have only the grommet inside that magnet helps out big time.

    LOL Yes. 22:34 is the middle hidden spark plug I first placed the socket and extension into the hole then I attached the ratchet to the extension then I used a tube in the ratchets handle to give me more leverage and loosen the spark plug with less effort then I used a flat head screwdriver to remove the ratchet from the extension and then removed the extension then with the magnet in the hose I pulled out the spark plug.

    Did you film any part of this with an endoscope? Why did you leave out the taking out of spark plugs from cylinder 3 & 5. I was really curious to see how you unplugged the wire harness from the coil pack and whether or not there was enough harness and room to simply lift the coil packs out without having to unplug them. The hardest part of the job for me is unsnapping those damned clips. Without breaking them. I made a tool to do it and with a screwdriver was able to get them off. What a PITA they are even when you have plenty of room. The next big problem is if some idiot has over-tightened the two aluminum Phillips head screws that hold the ACIS to the bracket. What design genius decided to use Phillips head screws? Torx or Allen head would have been far preferable where it's awkward to get alignment and to put enough pressure on to keep the head from twisting out.
    I found that on cylinder 1 lifting the coil pack straight up while turning it 90 degrees allowed enough room to get it up so it would come out foot first, thus not having to push it past the ground wires on the alternator and taking a chance of breaking one of them...I'll be back with comments after replacing the plugs for cylinders 3 & 5.
    A word of warning:: If you muck up those Phillips head screws you can't simply go to a dealership and buy them. They are only supplied with the $400 ACIS unit. Lexus has no separate part number for them according to the dealership in Greensboro, NC. Though the parts guy was excellent in offering to see if he could find one in the used parts bin if I brought one in he could match.

    I appreciate your DIY video. Little rough idling doesn't mean it is a spark plug problem though. Your car is more than 10 year old. You can't still think it is new and smooth. You doesn't know Lexus computer in your car will let you know when to change spark plug ? I have to let everybody know how durable Toyota parts is.......... My Friend's 2006 Camry V6 at 187,000 miles have not change the Spark Plug and Spark plug wire and it is still running strong. Lexus original Toyota Denso OEM Iridium spark plug is 8 times stronger than Platinum Spark Plug. You may start thinking about changing them after 200,000 mile. I was cheated by a car mechanic. He told me at 100,000 miles, you have to add Freon gas into you Toyota air condition system. It was a Big Fat Lie. My other friend who is still driving his 1996 Toyota corolla at 220,000 mile has never add any Freon gas in his air condition system and still blowing cold air. And again he still has not change the spark plug and spark plug wires since the day he bought the car new. My Advice for everybody. " If it is not broken, please don't Fix it " ..... Save the $80 and buy something for your Love one........ Just change the Thermostat with new gasket and Original Toyota Red Coolant every 100,000 miles to prolong the Life of the Head Gasket. You don't want your car's head Gasket blown at 150,000 miles because it cost from $1600 to $2500 US dollars. This is the part of a car maintenance most mechanic don't want you to know. They want you to spend big money for repair. I was there.... I was hurt.... so now you know.... Don't screw up your car engine.

    Very inexperience from my view. That was the GROUND cable you were doing instead of the positive one. It was right that you disconnected the grounds and should've shoved it between the battery and the wall then you go on with your repair. The other word, you should've disconnected them both and taped around on the positive terminal.

    • @Hizenbird
      @Hizenbird 2 года назад

      The GROUND cable is the one that should be removed. Once that’s removed there is no need to remove the positive terminal. On a motor vehicle (in the US) the whole car is GROUNDED Negative as opposed to positive in some other countries. Hence, remove the GROUND cable. If something bridges the connection between positive and some other part of the car nothing will happen.

    • @CurtWelch
      @CurtWelch 2 года назад

      He removed and covered both cables, doing the ground first just as it should be done. Very good advice to post for random strangers. Shorting the battery by accident is the worst.
