That coop is over the top. The Taj Mahal of chicken coops. You outdid yourself on this. A few years back I turned a pig pen into a coop. It had a concrete slab, fully enclosed with cyclone fencing and a little area of chicken wire. Strong door and a roof. I thought it was impenetrable. It was a better prison than Alcatraz. So I thought. Something still got into it. What I’ve learned is NEVER let your guard down when it comes to chickens. That’s why we got a dog. Great job. One of the best coops I’ve ever seen. 👍👍

That is fantastic chicken coop. When the video started I thought no way is that coop fox proof. After the video I thought no way is a fox getting in there. He metal bar is the icing on the cake.

Thanks Nikki. The coop has been performing well. We added another run about the same size and then added a large area called the jungle run. It's so nice to give them that extra space. We have six hens so it was getting cramped. 🙂

@@nikkilongworth6098 I think that your mobile run is a great idea in addition to your 12 x 8 run. Gives them an extra place to break the monotony. Our hens were picking on each other even when I made the attached run. When we gave them another larger attached area they stopped picking on each other so much. And we just felt better giving them more space to roam.
Man you have a ton of safety measures. I should have watched this prior to building our coop. This was the video that popped up as your end screen on today’s video. Now I have to go back and leave a comment on that one😂
Haha! It was built out of paranoia. I had watched a video where raccoons had opened a latch on a persons coop and killed all the chickens. Pretty terrible.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful. I ended up making another covered run connected to the original build to give the chickens more room. We also created a large fenced area connected to the right of the original run. They spend most of their time out in the big fenced area unless it's raining.
excellent coop, like how you did cedar strips on the hw cloth, double door on run low to walk over, chicken door lock pole, pop in windows for winter great ideas .... i just wish you made your main run double the size or more

Thanks! I incorporated many of the same features into my own coop recently because I want to protect them!I only have a small flock but 6 will lay more than enough eggs for my needs(once they start laying)!

Dans Bois Homestead I wish I would have incorporated the deep litter method into the coop. I basically grab poop with tongs in the morning and put in a bucket which makes the pine shavings last a long time. I take the bucket to the compost piles when full. Not the greatest method of handling the poo but I talk to the girls while I take care of it and it goes quick. Looking forward to seeing your place. More bears! Wow, that’s exciting.

Great job.. I also have a predator proof coop I build just a couple months ago.. The apron on the ground to prevent digging. I diddnt stop at the corners. I extended the length on 2 sides to cover the width on the other 2 sides and wired them together to make a solid barrier then you don't have to add in the corners. Mine is also like fort Knox.. But large enough for up to 12..

Thanks Mark. FYI...Just recently, mice have made it into the run. Even though I have the hardware cloth extending out about a foot or more, they found their way under it. I probably should have went straight down in the ground with the hardware cloth instead of going out.
@@AlmostHomestead Yea that has been one of my concerns, what I've been considering is pouring a mud mat (concrete slab) maybe 2" thick leaving it an inch or 2 below grade putting a moisture barrier on top, then throwing some shaving and dirt in there. It would make it easy to clean having a flat surface to shovel off of directly and also create a predator barrier if the cloth were to extend into the concrete. I would install 2x4 where it meets the concrete inside and outside to shore it up. Thankyou for your video and tips!

Thank you! Didn't see Carolina coops. Just looked at different designs and heard several stories about predators opening latches and that made me paranoid. Haha! So I tried to overbuild and make it as secure as possible. Since then I have added an adjoining covered area and a large outdoor area. They are much happier with more space.
Great job! Very secure! I don't like those water nipple things tho it is a unnatural head position and seems like a struggle. But all of ur craftsmanship and attention to detail is impressive.

So Sorry for the late reply. I just saw your comment. The quail coop is over by our shed across from the chicken coop. From what I understand, the quail wouldn't do well in a run with the chickens. Thank you very much, a lot of good ideas. Me too I'm a little stressed because we have foxes and skunks here and I want to have all the security needed in the coop we will build. Could you tell me hold cold does it gets in you area? Do you have snow?
Definitely good to protect your flock. We do get snow. We had about 3 feet this last winter and about 4 feet of snow the winter before that. Temps get into the 20's at times and we have been as low as 19 degrees. The chickens did great in the cold temps. They had all of their feathers in and i just made sure to pile up extra bedding for more insulation. I also gave them extra protein and snacks when it was cold which is supposed to help them stay warm. The most important things are that your chickens aren't getting wet inside the coop from condensation and that they are out of the wind so they don't get cold. You just have to have good cross ventilation. I have never had a moisture problem from condensation so my vents on opposite sides of the coop provided good ventilation. You just wouldn't want your chickens right next to the vents. I wish that I would have made the coop a little bigger. We have six hens now and they all fit on the roost but couldn't fit another. I guess that has helped they stay warm also since they are side by side. I might be telling you things you already know but just throwing it out there.Good luck with your coop build.

Good job. One thing people can add is a set of 4 motion sensing solar powered spotlights which come on at night if they sense motion and then automatically turn off 30 seconds later, which conserves the battery charge. I bought 4 of them off Amazon and I absolutely love them. I mounted one on each side of the coop, facing downward and outward. The first night one of the lights came on and I looked out there to see a fat skunk waddling around the quail coop. I will not harm a predator, and only wish to deter them. When a predator gets into an outdoor cage, it’s the fault and failure of the owner, not the predator, period. I had it happen once, and no way was I ever going to let it happen again. A raccoon pulled my quail’s legs through the bottom of the cage, which consisted of 1/2” hardware cloth mesh. Let me tell you, after discovering that, I spent the entire day making sure it would never happen again. It was my fault for not foreseeing that. My quail coop is now “bulletproof” and I have happy quail.
Love your comment and the fact that you are such a responsible person with your animals. We did put a solar motion sensor light on the front of the coop run and it lights up the inside of our cabin when anything creeps by. Four lights would be even better. So far we haven't lost any of our animals to predators. We definitely feel responsible for them as you do. Thanks for the great comment.

@@margerykirner8978 It's smaller then I would prefer but plenty of room to keep five girls happy and healthy. Unfortunately we have a small space to work with. But we do let them out to bigger netted off areas when we can.
Love your set up. Your water bucket is questionable. 2 of mine have broke at the handle but for no reason at all the turkeys one has made it for 5 years now. And i leave it out all winter. Just be careful or maybe thats just a heads up. Have a good weekend.

We only have 4 chickens / Buff Orpingtons . They are back yard chickens , we live in a sub division . Four chickens gives us approx 1 1/2 to 2 dozen eggs a week . All we need . We love ‘our girls’ and they know it - makes them good layers .
Hey we actually found them we have 3 and only recovered one then the next morning they both showed up thank god i was shocked really they survived the night and they were all alone and we found them in the morning chilling next to our door 👍

@@recj949 I think the nipples I have need to hang straight down or they would leak. But they do sell the side nipples too I believe.

@@margerykirner8978 It's smaller then I would prefer but plenty of room to keep five girls happy and healthy. Unfortunately we have a small space to work with. But we do let them out to bigger netted off areas when we can.
Love your set up. Your water bucket is questionable. 2 of mine have broke at the handle but for no reason at all the turkeys one has made it for 5 years now. And i leave it out all winter. Just be careful or maybe thats just a heads up. Have a good weekend.
Lorie Habel Thank you Lorie. I agree about the questionable bucket due to handle failure. I was kind of worrying about that so I only fill the bucket halfway and change the water every week.

We only have 4 chickens / Buff Orpingtons . They are back yard chickens , we live in a sub division . Four chickens gives us approx 1 1/2 to 2 dozen eggs a week .
All we need . We love ‘our girls’ and they know it - makes them good layers .

Hey we actually found them we have 3 and only recovered one then the next morning they both showed up thank god i was shocked really they survived the night and they were all alone and we found them in the morning chilling next to our door 👍
