  • Let's talk about the scandal surrounding the mental health platform BetterHelp. BetterHelp shared VERY sensitive personal information with Facebook, Snapchat, Criteo, and Pinterest. Because of that, the US Federal Trade Commission has proposed to ban BetterHelp from sharing its customers’ mental health data with marketers.

    Just a few days ago, Tracey Marks, a well known psychologist RUclipsr, posted a blind but positive review of BH. This is not the first time that I've commented to either a video promoting BH or a sponsee. Im just trying to get the world out not only about the privacy issues, but therapists telling a gay man to turn straight in order to stop feuding with his family. A person paying monthly dues but does not have a therapist because supposedly they don't have the kind of therapist you need. Getting therapist after therapist that is not familiar with cultures, morals, and unique challenges of certain populations (AAPI, Trans, Black, poor individuals, religions, etc). So yes, please make a video about this because we need to keep exposing BH on the several fronts they've mucked up over the last 5-10 years.

    Hello, I am a psychotherapist who has struggled with the role that technology plays with my platforms, and while better help avail therapy to people who might not otherwise be able to afford it, I’m very concerned about what Google, Facebook, and other online platforms do with the data that they have. up until 2020 I did everything on paper with the exception of email, which I’m also due about. This just makes me want to go back to the way things were done in the 20th century.

    • @Surfshark
      @Surfshark  8 месяцев назад +4

      Thank you so much for sharing your experience! These types of platforms really can be a game changer for making therapy more accessible. But you're right, since they're handling such extremely sensitive data, they need to be even more privacy-focused. Even therapist confidentiality itself becomes tricky when there's an app between the patient and the therapist.

    If people consented through their sign on or contracts it's different then they can share the information so some people consent and that's the part that isn't being acknowledged in this short clip it's not used to post or share people's personal information but if people want to disclose some of what they went through they can and it's also used for marketing purposes they don't have to disclose the person's actual name and all that stuff but they're sharing the content that's been shared just to create content or to create a better understanding of you know whatever trauma or whatever is going on it's not meant to yeah I want to consent to so yeah it's different so I want to consent to disclose is what's on their there should be a checklist or a check off when people sign up and some people information doesn't get put out there with their full name and their legal information they just share you know very general information

    • @Surfshark
      @Surfshark  7 месяцев назад +1

      Well, in their complaint, the FTC claimed that the problem is that:
      "At several points in the signup process, BetterHelp promised consumers that it would not use or disclose their personal health data except for limited purposes, such as to provide counseling services. Despite these promises, BetterHelp used and revealed consumers' email addresses, IP addresses, and health questionnaire information to Facebook, Snapchat, Criteo, and Pinterest for advertising purposes."
      And apparently, "BetterHelp used consumers' email addresses and the fact that they had previously been in therapy to instruct Facebook to identify similar consumers and target them with advertisements for BetterHelp's counseling service."
      So, perhaps the main issue is handling such sensitive data as health information and then using it for advertising services without informing the person signing up.
      But you're very right, it's completely different when the user agrees to share the information and gives consent!

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Surfshark sorry, technically, those don't qualify as "personal health" under current US law. In other words, they deliberately shared what they could get away with legally, which makes one wonder if they planned to do that from the very beginning. Hiring newbie graduates (hello student debt!) and inexperienced therapists meant they could offload all the legal responsibility onto them. They just gave data of who, when and where people sought therapy, which is very underhanded and arguably immoral, but not illegal. That's why they are still able to function even with the FTC complaint.

    It's easy to criticize BetterHelp therapy services, but it seems that you haven't taken the time to understand the systemic problems in mental health and the behavior of recent years. The consequence is that most people don't talk about their problems, and BetterHelp is providing a platform and space for them to do so. Eventually, some will grow and move on to in-person therapy, but everyone is different. Instead of breaking the stigma, these types of interviews seem to want to destroy a platform that is helping people take the first step to talk to someone, be heard, and feel good. We're getting lost in your idealization of therapy, and while I understand you don't want to work with them, please don't fall into the ego game of putting people down or making it seem like something isn't good or just to create conflict and followers

However, without specific references or data, it remains a general claim. You are not providing that. Ok. second you wrote : One secretly trying to wash dishes during therapy sessions": This statement implies a specific incident of unprofessional behavior by a therapist. Again, without further context or evidence, it remains an anecdotal claim. We Need to make sure we sustain everything we write. Third you wrote Are you getting paid by them?": This question is an accusation or insinuation without evidence. It suggests a conflict of interest without any basis for such a claim. Criticism from psychiatrists and mental health doctors towards mental health services can perpetuate negative attitudes and stigma, potentially harming individuals' mental health and discouraging them from seeking help. Instead, constructive feedback and advocacy for improved services can promote positive change and support mental wellbeing.
