Disabling a beautiful multi-zone hydronic system, with a good Burnham cast iron boiler, to now rely on a goofy geothermal system, and electric baseboard units in a far northeastern state? Let’s see how warm the house is when it’s been -15F for a week. Then just wait until that geothermal heat stops on a Sunday in subzero temperatures, and nobody has parts to repair it immediately.
@@ntsecrets definitely not like that near Chicago. A week back there were two days my normally very capable 120,000 BTU gas furnace ran almost continuously to maintain.

Earl would walk in and look at something for 3 minutes an go, Here's your problem. He could be frustrating because he could be 5 min from finishing but it was 11:59 and it was lunch time. Take off for an hour. He owned a bowling ally and had it set up for geo. His heating and cooling bills were almost non existent. He passed a couple years back. Odd duck but friendly and so smart. Thanks for video Steven!
people who use those geothermal systems have houses that are built extremely insulated even the basements it will be crazy expensive to run that on an old house with poor insulataion.
Why get rid of what would be an awesome back up heating system you can run that off a small generator if you had to. I live in up state ny about 1 mile from Canadian border I got three ways to heat my house.
We need to know how much power cost over there. How much is it per kWh to buy power from the utility? Natural gas...per BTU or CuFt or is it available? Oil cost? I can't imagine a solar system being much of a choice in the forest areas, mountain cabins etc. What are people thinking? All of this is old news, decades ago they determined which heating system was best for the residence. I guess some folks failed to graduate high school. Solar or Geothermal systems are not free so the cost to install those applies big time to the total cost/savings details.
Call the guy next week when the temps are single digits and ask him if his balls are still hiding in his stomach because it’s so cold. I hope he calls you back to reconnect and install new baseboards. You could give him your Massachusetts rebate!
Electric strips in your area of the country? What does Mr. Green think is used to generate that electricity? There's a reason why big houses in New England were built with oil boilers.
Hydronic is more comfortable, for sure. Its all comes down to electric rates vs oil, interest rates and size of the house. I suspect in this case, the homeowner will never recover their install cost vs oil. Electric rates aren't cheap in MA
And if they're looking for environmentally friendly, they can run B100 biodiesel, there are companies that deliver it in MA. My mother's house uses B100 for heat, it burns clean and doesn't leave soot. It costs less than #2 oil. No modifications required to run it in an oil burner, just fill the oil tank and that's it.
Geothermal? $60,000?!?!?! That’s insanity!!!! I can add on to my house for that or build a nice garage! I’d probably go with radiant floor heat if I lived up north. I learned recently and thought it was interesting - a properly made masonry heater with all the channels in it burning wood is the most efficient heater on the planet if you really wanna be green. Small fire then it radiates heat all day long! But, no one looks at the facts. A masonry heater burns wood which has the least amount of total energy in it from start to finish compared to the other fuels. But, they still push heat pumps because the left’s ultimate goal is to make everyone poor and not own anything so they can have more control.
When our former President comes back to office he will change his mind an switch back to oil. LOL I'm thinking here why doesn't he just leave it all hooked up just incase you know.
I had a temporary hot water heater in my house during my boiler upgrade. It was over $100 a month in electric and it was summer time when I dont even take really hot showers.
I never had one disk break on me ether till 1 did hit me in the belly did not cut my shirt but I was bleeding from it dam that hurt you never know worked with them for 50 years before it happened
I cut myself with my grinder a few years ago, not a bad cut. But it was a wide cut since the disc was wide making it a little longer to regenerate than say a razor blade cut. I can still see on my finger where it was. So yes, you do not want to get cut with a grinding disc.

My neighbor has been trying to get me to go with the solar panels on the roof. He is saving a lot on his electric bill. But he needs roof repairs or it replaced. The solar panel company wants 5,000 dollars to remove and install the panels. That is nuts. I would have to pay for a roof and the panels too. Nope not me
Snow and sub-zero temperatures for 4 days here in Chicago. The solar dumb dumb homes down my block still have many of their panels blocked with snow. Funny that snow isn’t effecting my gas furnace one little bit.
@@chatrkat yep, natural gas most efficient cost wise. I can easily wire up my generator if needed to the furnace which uses minimal power. How about those electric cars? Don't people realize batteries won't work in those temps?
Electric heat still has major deficiencies in cold weather. Down south where i live, we are experiencing the occasional single digit temperatures, along with snow, some areas just freezing rain, that we see just a few times a winter. And the power companies are already talking about stress on the grid. Because half of our heating down here is by heat pump, and in order for it to keep up, everyone is having to run the AUX electric resistance heat on top of it longer.
Those heat strips typically pull 3.5-5 kw each too. An average heater pack with two strips is pulling 20 amps while it’s running. You could set up an entire 2 stage furnace oil or gas and run it on 20 amps(sometimes 15) and actually get reliable and quick heat year-round as opposed to the struggles a heat pump with heat strips creates in cold weather. You just can’t beat combustion for that fast and toasty heat.
Steven, i think it's a bad idea to remove the heaters cause it's gonna de value the home. It's always better to have the options. If the oil price drops he's gonna be regretting his decisions.

Thank God that is only sometimes it is very severe and not all the time. Anyhow, our Oil heat has done a great job for us for over three decades. Another option around us has been palette stoves. Our friend has it, but it is always too hot in their house, and every few days they shut it down and clean it. And let's not talk about storing palette bags, and keep filling the palette stove. With our Oil Boiler, if we need extra heat we just turn up the thermostat. We pay for it, but it works.
