@MrSpeed-do2zk on the contrary, it should be considered child abuse to raise kids in houston. The air quality is bad that one can’t even breathe there. It’s an environmental disgrace that needs to be wiped off the planet for global survival. The same can be said for many Indian cities and Mexico City.
There is also a lot of petty and property theft there. It’s just a desperate coastal shithole. New Orleans but with buildings
San Antonio is just like Houston but farther from the coast and hotter. Houston but *without* buildings and, in many ways worse but you can breathe there for now. Your best bet would be Austin and Dallas if you are going to Texas. All the important stuff happens in Austin or Dallas.

We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. In my opinion, house prices will continue down as people leave the state and prices correct due to market pressure. The problem with Florida is the property taxes increased based on the boom and the cost or inability to obtain homeowners insurance. Florida's in for a rough 5 years imo.

Houston is tucked into a southeast corner of Texas, on the Coastal Plain. Texas is HUGE: different soils, widely different average rainfall totals, different average temperatures, different bugs/spiders, different utility delivery systems, and different local customs. Some parts will suit some folks more than other folks. Our family has one member who benefits from being very near the Texas Medial Center, in Houston. Otherwise, I would rather live well outside the Houston metro area, preferably on some relatively high ground, between major rivers, and not too close to either the coast, or the I-35 corridor. The idea is to live in a place that is peaceful, quiet, and that we need never “evacuate.”

Houston has tons of bad drivers. I have been rear ended at least six times in Houston. For some reason, teenage girls are the worst drivers and I have been hit twice by females running through stop signs. The last person didn’t have insurance so she lost her license and my insurance company sued the driver and her mother (who owned the car).

Maybe the problem is the 3 of y’all. I was born and raised in Houston, so I do drive fast. If you’ve been rear ended several times, drive faster or stay in the right lane. Get out of people’s way. I love driving in Houston. Everyone drives 10 mph over the speed limit. If you can’t handle it, take the bus. My guess is that Downtoearth, Pickles, and Yosteve are older people who were not raised in Houston, nor did they learn to drive there. If they were from Houston or had learned to drive there, they wouldn’t have any complaints. Now that I live in Austin, I’m always beyond annoyed with people who actually drive the speed limit or slower. I don’t have all day to leisurely drive from point A to B.

We have many freeways, the beltway and 610. Average speed 75-80. The WORST are the ones that stop on the frigging entrance ramp! It's annoying! Picture LA traffic sitting still but in Houston, that same traffic is going 70 plus. They can't handle it. They want to get in the fast lane and go 50 mph then they wonder why they get hit? Ugh. The biggest hazard with Houston traffic is that you have drivers from all over the world, and they all learned to drive differently. That makes them unpredictable. Hi, I'm a native Texan who was born in Houston. I now live in North Texas near the OK border. As a female, tell your wife not to bother curling her hair because the humidity will instantly make it straight as soon as you go outside. Sometimes the humidity is 100% and will hang in the air like a wet blanket as compared to Denver where there is dry heat. The temperature can be the same but Texas will feel hotter because of the wet heat. Also, always use 50 SPF sunscreen even if the sky is overcast.
Things that can "unalive" you next.
A good idea is to know the symptoms of heatstoke. Keep well hydrated in the hottest months of July through September. Carry water with you.
Crazy drivers are here, I learned how to drive a stickshift, back in the day, on the 6-10 loop by myself. Yes, I was either brave or stupid, maybe both, but with cars whizzing past me at 90 mph, I did learn how to transition the gears and work the clutch smoothly with the brake and accelerator. One bit of advice, drive defensively. If someone is tailgating you in the fast lane, kindly move to the next lane because drivers are tailgating that driver, and so on. It's just a common courtesy. If someone has road rage, move away from them, and do not engage. Nowadays, everyone carries a gun and may use it.
Houston is a floodplain. If there is a watch or warning for floods, heed it very seriously. I have seen fatalities of people who did not know. Water can build up very quickly. Head to high ground immediately and under no circumstances drive through the standing water underneath underpasses.
Hurricane season starts around September. Again, take these seriously, if you are told to flee, do it. You might want to keep bags packed for times like these depending on how much notice you get. I have been through multiple hurricanes.
When I lived in Dallas, coyotes were abundant. They fearlessly walk the streets in the daytime. Be careful, they are wily. They may act like they going away from you, but if you walk away to get in the house, check over your shoulder to see where they are because they will be running at you. If you have small pets, get them inside ASAP.
At the risk of this comment turning into a novel, I will stop now. Sorry it's so long. Welcome to Texas!

Lastly, every sub-division has an HOA. HOAs are huge in Texas, and the state gives them way too much power. The boards can get out of hand. We used to run our own HMO until one President courted a Management Company and we’ve been stuck with one company after another since. We were lucky the first Manager had a rental home in the property and he personally visited every other day. He responded quickly to complaints like a landlord. He also kept our maintenance fees lower than the surrounding complexes. However, as soon as we hired a management company our monthly fees increased by 33%. He closed his business and moved to Conroe after 15years and it’s been awful with the two companies who followed. This latest one doesn’t even respond to calls or emails and has no personal contact with anyone except to complain. Our President had to fight with them to pay for my shattered window replacement that was caused by a pebble from the landscapers’ leaf blower. It took months to be finally reimbursed and at first the Mgmt company refused to take responsibility saying the windows were our responsibility. The fees keep increasing each year and our services and landscaping decreases. They just brought us in line with their other properties and regularly charge “assessments” as much as $200/month on top of our regular fees. We were 4 years with the last one and as soon as it was finished our regular monthly maintenance fees rose. I was paying more for my maintenance fees than my mortgage and there was no relief from that during Covid whatsoever. A nightmare.

Your title is correct, but in the video you keep saying just "Texas" more often than specifically saying Houston. Texas isn't a small state like where you were before. Many of the things you are talking about are specific to the Houston area. This is especially when you talk about weather (regarding humidity, storms, etc). I lived in both El Paso for around ten years, and didn't experience most of the things you are talking about. The reason why that is true, is because El Paso is 750 miles from Houston. I also lived in Killeen for 3 years, and it also isn't the same as Houston.

We've also installed an on-demand water heater which also saves us money, with a bonus that you can take long showers without running out of hot water. The hay fever is terrible. Way more than 15 reasons to NOT live in or near Houston . . .
    - Houston = USA's most diverse city = the most accents you cannot understand (hospital staff from Nigeria, etc.)
    - Houston school's are so substandard, the STATE terminated the school board and took over the CITY's schools.
    - Houston public transportation is also substandard, everyone MUST own a private vehicle
    - $10 more to fill gas tank in the city (drive over city limit into contiguous suburb to pay $10 less per tank)
    - among the highest property taxes of all the states
    - tollways (opposite of freeways)
    - hard-freezes in December/January and power goes out, no heat!
    - summer = over half the year (no spring, no fall)
    - heat 100+ degrees + humidity 90%
    - HUGE expensive central air conditioning a must
    - high electric bills to run HUGE central air conditioner
    - $12,000+ generator to run central air conditioner during power outage a must
    - Bayous = occasional alligator in the city and suburbs
    - alligator-wrangler is an actual job title
    - cockroach-wrangler is another actual job title
    - Texas has more cockroaches than any other state
    - Houston has more cockroaches than any other city
    - residents have roach-control on retainer (inside and out, quarterly)
    - traffic as bad as Los Angeles
    - published as the worst drivers in the USA (road-rage+guns=bad combo)
    - one of the highest crime cities in the USA
    - 6-months/year = tornado season
    - 6-months/year = hurricane season
    - rains part of every month, all year long
    - more inches of rain per year than Seattle, really, Google it!
    - lightning storms, lots of lightning strikes in/near Houston (lightning strike capital is just west of Houston)
    - rain = monsoon = flooding within a matter of minutes
    - lack of drainage = standing water = mosquitos
    - city is sinking 2cm, almost 4/5-inch per year
    - as your house sinks into the SE Texas black-mud, plumbing pipes break resulting in your house floating on a pool of sewage and feces
    - jacking up houses and repairing foundations (and plumbing) is BIG business in/near Houston
    - Gulf of Mexico is rising (climate change)
    - Due to the city sinking and gulf rising, Houston will disappear
I could continue but you get the idea.
Living near NASA makes sense for astronauts BUT nobody other than astronauts should live in/near Houston...REALLY.

Good list. Informative. I don't think we meant to live in places with such unrelenting heat and humidity. I prefer four seasons, balanced weather.

Really I will never recommend Houston as the first city to live in America.

I'm only on #1 but I had to comment. I'm from GA and I've always assumed southern hospitality was in SOUTHERN states. Y'all are not very friendly here. I smile and say good morning, etc. A lot of people ignore me. I wasn't sure if it was a black/white thing, but even some black people don't acknowledge me. I'm like damn 😩😩

Probably just a not friendly thing. Keep on smiling and saying hello. 😊

Ppl in the boonies in ATL still have southern hospitality. That's one thing I noticed when I went to Houston. No southern hospitality

I’m in Georgia and the hospitality ain’t here either lol. It has become very big-city attitude in nature. Nobody speaks. Southern hospitality has left the building in Georgia

@atima50614 it still exists in places like Newnan, Peachtree City, Senoia, Dallas, Tyrone...I take GA over TX hands down. I came from there. I'm in FL. Please do not move to FL. We're way over crowded. Too many ppl moving here. Stop moving to Florida. 😆
