- This Footprint Pipe Wrench is an authentic one made in Sheffield in England and they are still made today.
They were first invented in 1875 and are still being made in this design. They are normally produced with a black finish that I have recreated with a technique that I used in the 1970's in metal work class at school There are many copy Footprint Wrenches out there so keep an eye out for the originals.

Nicely done, sir. A simple yet powerful tool.
Great job Martin, footprint tools made in my city Sheffield.
Very good craftmanship
Wow, the wrench turned out looking great! Heating up the metal, and quenching in the motor oil, gave it a really nice finish.
I am about to do up a set of footprints, my local junk shop had four of these, but not one of them had the pin in, i made one that is just as good, but still not original. This video was very timely, Thanks. I just did up a 14 inch Chatwin pipe wrench.
Footprints are brilliant. Great restoration!
That looks magnificent, better than new
Very nice. Another quality British made tool from back in the day.
Another one done! I just knew you'd smile right before placing it in your tool chest.
Wow, nice process. Looks great
I have a pair of Footprint wrenches, had them for years, dead simple basic wrenches that are so easy to use, I have always given mine a once over with a oily rag and they never rust, simple tool maintenance, you did a top notch restoration and gets my 5 ☆ rating,a nice little video
Thanks Colin
Magic job on the wrench love a footprint..top work
Nice work. The media blasting is my favorite.
I love the old motor oil technique, that looks just like hot waxing. I'll have to try it myself!
Doing these types of videos a blast cabinet is the only way to go
Another great little resto well done
very nice job martin and you wont be caught out again there are many tools for a job fantastic work
Nice one Martin! Amazing job!
another resto done superbly, well done Martin.. atb Steve
Nice restoration of a brilliant English tool, got one of the same in my tool box that I have had for 60 years still working like new,I give you 5 ☆ rating
Thanks bud, yes they are a great reliable tool.
Sheffield tool: build to last.
Another fine video again Martin keep them coming
I’ve never seen the oil technique but left a nice finish nice one Martin.
Still use footies great tool. Mine is also rusty from plumbing work! Good job.
Good restoration 👍👍👍
I’ve got a few pairs myself. All back to bare metal so I’ll have to try this
First time I’ve ever seen a set of these in a while
I did see you use that tool trying to get the lock to turn on the van. Nice clean up on it. And interesting to see how many tools you have in your shop that I have as well, but with different names on them. Your parts washer and sandblaster cabinet are the very same that I have. But yours has Clarke on them. Thumbs Up, I enjoy watching your videos.
Yes Gary, these were the ones in the Transit Movie lol
Never understood why you'd want to use oil to cool metal until now! Pipe wrench looks fantastic Martin.
At my school in the 70's girls weren't allowed to do metal or wood work just domestic science and I feel I missed out on a lot of skills.(Great cook though)
Haha Babs, I remember them times well too.
And they should never be allowed near metalworking shop. Keep it that way and stick to knitting.
Really liked the ending, should do it in all your tool videos putting them with the others you've restored in the drawer. 👍👍👍👍
I would love to see all the tools back in the toolbox with before and after shots
Nice tool, i have just done a 14 inch Chatwin, it came up well.
Nice recovery Mart.
Baz.
Great vid Martin 👍
I've got a set just like that, they were in an old shed when we moved here in 1984.
They still make them as well.
great job martin. your getting good at this lol.
Good job man! Can i ask you a question? Why are likes turned off? For sure you will get a lot of thumbs up
Just don't like to feed the trolls bud.
@@bizarreandbrilliant ok, i suggest you to turn it on. It always looks kind of fishy to me, when i click on a video and likes are turned off. I automaticly ask myself: "what's wrong with the video?" But yours is really good and i also just read nice comments. Btw dislikes and likes are the same in terms of video ranking 😉
Nice job
hi mart nice job bud
job done.... very nice
Great video Martin. Turned out looking great. You said you had done this in school. I too did metal work and woodwork but I don’t know of any secondary schools that teach this stuff anymore. I know myself, having a teenage son who hasn’t a clue when it comes to diy or fixing things that their generation will struggle in later life. Unless they end up in a trade for their job they’ll have to pay for someone to do the job for them.......or get me to do it for free! 😂
Thats one of the reasons I make videos Neil to show stuff we can do with a bit of understanding, patience and a have a go attitude.
satisfying and clean finished..waiting for next post. what is that orange color oven like cleaning box ?
A Parts washer bud.
Made in Sheffield from Sheffield steel 👍🏻
Got that exact tool plus some of their cold chisels and tin snips.Mine were made in the late 1980's tho not 1875 lol. Had a mate who worked at Footprint at the time. :)
I liked the video thanks sir
Seems we've got the same old tools in the boxes we got eh Martin 😊
Haha, probably have Malc lol
Great vid as usual Martin. Did you see The Repair Shop on BBC tonight? The guy used a mix of ATF and Acetone to treat rust on a seized cobblers shoe spreading Machine. He just brushed it on all over and left it in the solution over night. In the morning it looked like it had been treated with one of those expensive rust converter products. It may have been edited, but worth a try I think, if I have any rust to deal with in the future.
Not seen that, i'll check it out on Iplayer.
Cheers
Martin
Great video Martin - did you have to restore the teeth or were they all good?
They were perfect, just rusty
Good job guy from DZ
Be careful when you place hot metal in cutting PVC bottle. Hot metal can easily make hole in it and oil will leak out. Anyway, very nice restoration.
you don’t see too many of these wrenches there quite rare
Did someone forget to tell you, you can't wash your hair in the parts washer Martin??!! lol
I have one exactly like it i had it from my father tools
nice
Nice job Martin have you sorted your payments out yet not fair producing good videos well done
No Dave, i'm in limbo still and nothing I can do about it.
Music was a bit off, wasn't sure if you were restoring an old wrench or if you'd successfully brought private Ryan home....
All adds to the drama of restoring something that was left for dead
martin your so fast with your hands lol
Retrohax: instalike!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Pozdrawiam serdecznie z Polski
Im a bricky in Australia and we have Footprint Line Pins from the old Dart. Every bricky i know buys them as any other brand are absolute crap alongside them..
Good quality tools always last.
Used these (small & large) throughout my years as an electrical contractor. Ideal for tightening conduit accessories. Why did we call them 'Dogs' ?????
This Yank needs to know! What the heck is a footprint wrench used for? Otherwise nice restore job!
Plumbing mostly
What, no polish, no prime, no paint? That is it? :(
Not every tool has a polish finish. These were black originally.
Sheffield steel... One could definitely do worse!
--EEEHHH...ENGLISH TOOL..!! DO NOT CRAP "USA"..!!
